I don't follow hockey but it must suck to start a new team. If all the best players are "protected" from an expansion draft, also assuming that means what I think it does, then what's the point?

You wind up with a team of third string jobbers who are at a huge disadvantage. Who the hell would pay to watch a team lose? It's fine for away games but Hockey is a business. If no one goes to the home games you make no money.

I get that ANY NHL player is still really great at Hockey... But by the same standard those "protected" players are just that much better. Right?

Seems like you're making a new team, spending hundreds of millions to do so, all the while knowing that there's like 5% chance of them winning the Stanley Cup. Seems crazy.

Loved the fact that during that first threes match, at around 36:35 min into the quicklook the opposing team score celebration suddenly have 4 or 5 people on the ice out of nowhere.

I know the team ratings are kinda bull anyway but those ratings for the Vegas Golden Knights are EXTREMELY generous.

Is it just me, or is the commentary really stilted - or, at least, more stilted than one would expect in a modern sports game? I felt like there was a lot of, "SHIPLA! Gets the puck. They really need to...MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN here. Oh! That was a...WASTED OPPORTUNITY!"

Offsides *grits teeth*

apparently the game calls it offside, so why do americans keep saying offsides? I never understood.

Also that 3 on 3 commentator sounds like Internet Dan without the cursing.

@onemanarmyy: Offsides is a term in American football, that's probably where it comes from.

That is usually the case, but this time around teams were not allowed to protect as many players. My team, the Nashville Predators, lost one of their best scoring forwards because they had to protect their younger, talented defense men.

Certainly, Vegas won't be a top team, but it will not be like expansions in the past where the team is terrible for 5-10 years.

The goal of a new expansion for management is not to generally make a Stanley Cup run, let alone even make the playoffs. New teams generally need somewhere around 5 years to actually start building a team to an actual competitive level because they just need to attract talent. Most have the goal of just getting more than X number of points to finish the season, or a specific-placed finish in their divisions.

It also depends on who's in upper management - sometimes you get a lot of new people, sometimes you get some people with a lot of experience right away. I still remember when the San Jose Sharks were a brand new team and were pretty junky. Now they're an established franchise that is a playoffs regular.
