Holy shit, I would've never thought I'd ever see River Plate, my home team, in a GB video, but there it is, right at the start!

@danryckert: It's fairly common for right-handed soccer players to be left-footed. It can be an acquired skill during childhood, and some players are actually fairly adept at using both feet.

@danryckert always seems confused by what FIFA actually is so I'm going to try to explain it. I'm not even a soccer fan but I think I can help anyway - and I'll try to keep it as simple as I can. Hopefully you see this, Dan.

FIFA isn't a league in the same way the NFL or NBA is but instead is the governing body which oversees the sport of soccer around the world. Almost every country has their own soccer league (often multiple leagues) and in America it is Major League Soccer (and in England it's the Premier League). New York has two teams in MLS - New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls (and yes, they're owned and sponsored by Red Bull). Teams in MLS primarily only play against each other but sometimes can play against teams from another league in a different country during the off-season either as part of a regional tournament or as a one-off exhibition.

To put it into wrestling terms - FIFA is like the National Wrestling Alliance where the NWA was a governing body which oversaw all the territories around the country.

Now the FIFA World Cup is completely separate to MLS, the Premier League and similar leagues around the world. Think of it like the OIympics of soccer. Neither of the New York teams or any team from the MLS, Premier League, etc. can play in the World Cup but the best American players, no matter which team they play for (and players can theoretically play for any team in the world) are selected to play for the American national team. Teams have to qualify before being able to take part in the tournament and play against other countries.

Some of the stuff Danny talks about regarding PES mirrors what my soccer crazy friends have talked about over the years.

Great to hear Danny back with the Beast crew.

After she played FIFA18 though I’d rather have had Abby playing this with Vinny instead of Dan. Still a great quick look though.

Hope Danny is on the FIFA19 one too.

Did I just hear my man Danny say "offsides" at 13:45?

Welcome to America, brother. I'm gonna go shed a single tear, drink a few beers, and go muddin' in my backyard in your honor, my boy.

Proud of ya!

Why would they lock you to single region in matchmaking? That's so backwards and anti-consumer. I'd probably refunding this game.

The dominant leg does not have to be the same as the dominant hand at all. For people with dominant right hand they very often have a dominant right leg (like 90+%) but for left-handed people it's almost 50:50.

However what we call dominant is not as clear cut as it suggests. Like with most things: if you want to understand the reality of it, it becomes much more complex than how we pretend it is. Even if someone is considered right-handed they may do quite a few things with the left hand rather than the right. Maybe they use the left hand instead of the right hand most of the time despite being right-handed: Experts use like 12 types of actions to determine your dominant hand. Someone may do maybe 4 of the most common activities with the left and never with the right, and still be considered right-handed. Rather than calling someone left- or right-handed it would be more accurate to describe your right- and left-handedness with a percentage. And that's what the experts do.

Football games quick looks are always a treat, but that last part where Vinny got lost in the menus really made me laugh. I would kill for a feature where he would try to make sense of Football Manager.

Dan, we might need to read your fifa reviews :)

All i could find was this review for Fifa Street 3 which isn't all too interesting:

FIFA Street 3 (360)

EA can keep trying to throw different sports under the "Street" header, but I highly doubt any one of them is going to work on the level as the basketball-based original. It was based on style, which is much easier to express in street basketball than it was in NFL Street and now FIFA Street. Sure, you can use the right analog stick to perform fancy juggles and other moves, but it's never nearly as exciting as bouncing a basketball off your opponent's face, rolling on the ground while dribbling, then performing a through-the-legs slam dunk. Despite soccer's translation difficulties to the EA Big franchise, this is not a bad title, just an underwhelming one. It animates well and features some exciting moments (often tied to the Gamebreaker function), but doesn't make you want to stand up and cheer when you score a goal like an arcade soccer game should.

6.2

The thing about soccer/ football that annoys me is that it started with Rugby Football & Association Football both falling under the football banner. To make a distinction between those sports, Rugby & Soccer got their respective names. Suddenly this new sport gets traction in North America. Gridiron Football. But instead of being cool and accepting the gridiron name as a third distinction, they decide that they'll rather just use the football name. Despite there being two other sports under the same banner already.

Nowadays it's treated like soccer fans should just stop whining and be okay with the soccer name. Despite the full rejection of the Gridiron name in North America. That's where the annoyance comes from. If NA would accept the gridiron name, i would be fine using the soccer name. That way, all 3 sports are clearly defined. There's no reason why Gridiron gets to claim the football name . They weren't the first, they aren't the most popular and the name makes the least amount of sense compared to the actual game that is being played.

I always enjoy how PES makes it feel like teams have their own playstyle, unlike FIFA where all teams try to play a similar style but are better at it depending on their stats.

I'm left handed & right footed.

Hulk is not his real name. Brazillian players are often known by their nickname. Pelé is not even his real name. Pelé is actually called Edson Arantes do Nascimento.

If you think about it, it's kinda weird how we pretty much always go forwards in time, but when it's time for sports, suddenly everyone should count down instead.

If Johnny plays a sunday match at 10:30, he'll be done at around 12.15. (incl. halftime pause) Being able to keep the game going and have the matches start & end at a similar time is valued more heavily than making sure that every match lasts exactly the same amount of minutes. Otherwise Johnny might not be home before 2 PM.
