I was looking forward to this one and I do enjoy hard, inscrutable games, but this just looks like they take it too far.

I hope that patch does improve a lot of the game's issues because the look is definitely striking.

Wow, Brad doesn't even know you can only hibernate when the symbol shows a tree and you have 3 eggs in the inventory and it's the afternoon ingame and there are 3 birds on screen? What a noob.

If a game is going to be inscrutable, I think I prefer this kind of extreme version as opposed to something like Dark Souls; where the fact that some things are explained creates a certain expectation that makes it frustrating when other things are not explained.

However, everything else about this game is totally unappealing to me; whereas I had (some) fun with Dark Souls.

I remember playing this at PAX a couple of years ago and finding it incredibly difficult and hard to understand. I just assumed it was a game not well suited to being shown in that context, but it looks like the experience of playing the final release at home is similarly impenetrable.

That said, I love the look of it, and I'm sure there are some people that will be very into this sort of experience.

This is a bad game.

Bad game design, poor controls and unfair mechanics make it bad. Not inscrutable, not difficult, not obtuse. But bad.

This game doesn't look fun. Shame to see a lot of animation work and art go into something I have no interest at all in after watching this.

There's something to be said about a game that does what it does without regard for the player. Things like "What?" and "Fuck!"

What's with those video notes? Will we now see those every time a QL game gets patched and changes things that have been discussed in the video? Because that would be a ton of extra work for you, reading all the patch notes and making sure they don't fix anything you pointed out in a previous video.

Btw, you should add some video notes to your Mass Effect Andromeda Quick Look. XD

This game looks fascinating to me and I might give it a try, especially if they improved the controls. @paulunga I think they would add notes when the can, and it makes sense, and they're compelled to like Brad was because I got the sense he did like this game in spite of itself.

I'm not going to sit here and say its for everybody but Rainworld feels decidedly old school in most ways. In ways that in all likelihood the modern gamer will be put off. I liken it to Another World. It's obtuse and punishing and clunky and beautiful. I like it.

Like Brad says, this is a pretty special case -- the game was patched during the time between when this was recorded and released. So it makes sense here. Mass Effect, meanwhile, was still flopping like a dying fish when those videos released.

I am about 20 hours in and loving the game, its incredibly unique and the locomotion feels really good once you have a good grasp of it. It reminds me of Heart of Darkness a little.

That being said, the complaint about it being inscrutable is totally valid. I would have dropped it pretty quickly if I didn't cheat by looking at forums. There is a part later in the game where you can't progress unless you eat a specific thing that it really doesn't feel like you're supposed to eat. I'm okay with there being stuff to discover on your own, but things that are key to progressing like the Karma system should have been spelled out more.

@billyok: In a world with day 1/week 1 patches it's not a special case, though. You basically can't trust any game to be what pre-release and launch day footage shows it to be.

I would love to see a discussion between @brad and the developers about wtf is going on in this game and what their intentions were. This just seems inscrutable to me.

This game reminds me of The Swindle. The Swindle is also an exceptionally hard, run-based game with theoretically good controls that, in action, are sluggish and present the core barrier between the player and the gameplay. In The Swindle, you need to be moving snappily, reacting quickly to hazards, but you can't because of the strange jumping physics. In spite of all that, I saw the game that I wanted in it through the muck, and tried to play through it. It was one of my most frustrating experiences in gaming. I'd put the controller down or choose another game, and then a week later, I'd see The Swindle in my library and think "man, a run-based robbery game sounds fucking cool right now..." and try again. Repeat four times until I just uninstalled it. I, like Brad, can't trust myself to acknowledge the real faults in a game that will stop me from enjoying it the way I envision I will in my head.

Having said all that, I'll probably still end up buying this game.

I kind of thought this game was going to be something absolutely different and in a way I feel like thats more on me than the game? But also, it doesn't seem like the thing that it actually is trying to be is all that fun?

This game is pretty fun, Brad seems to be especially bad at it. I bought it about a week ago, and if I had watched this first, I might think it was way, way, way more difficult than it actually is. q.q

This seems almost unnecessarily difficult for the sake of artistic design. I applaud the developers for making something like this though, this will absolutely appeal to some people, just not me unfortunately.

I was thinking Out of this World, but yes to both.

If I didn't already spend my video game budget this month I'd get this right away.

There are some harsh "bad game" comments in this thread though.

I think it looks way too hard to see key information. There were multiple times in the quick look where I had no idea there was a tunnel/entrance/item until Brad used it.

The another world / out of this world comparisons have some truth in the weird world full of inscrutable, instantly lethal danger. And terrible controls. But that game WAS NOT RANDOM. You could beat your head against a really obtuse puzzle for days, at least it would always be the same puzzle. Completely different in everything but style.

Also it had much more forgiving checkpoints.

There are some harsh "bad game" comments in this thread though.

I think they're doing the nothing explained / punishingly difficult combo in a way that's objectively wrong.

The thing that a bunch of these types of games have done really well over the past few years is that they kill you the first time with something you didn't know about and had no idea what to do. That's the lesson, and after that you die and say "well, this time it was my fault". This thing, not so much.

If you're the type of person that looks at the situation where there's monster waiting at either end of one of those pipes and you are just boned no matter what with calmness in your heart, good for you. Most people find that pretty frustrating.

Eh, I'm down for something like this if only to poke at it for a few hours. I felt like I was starting to figure some stuff out about the intended gameplay loop and UI by the end of the QL.

Some of that monster spawning that immediately kills you seems not-cool though.

Also I'm pretty sure you can spear those liazard things to slow them down.

Physics based movement just sounds frustrating, games with that often have fun things like not being able to jump properly because your character's foot wasn't on the ground but you as a player obviously don't have a sense of touch ingame so you don't notice that until you fail to jump...
