@larrydavis: "Heavily Puzzly" ? There is NO puzzle in this at all. You click the number above or below the one you have. That is it. It is as "heavily puzzly" as doing addition and subtraction. Or deciding what pair of socks to buy.

>.>

Nnno, looking at the cards behind them and figuring out the right order to do it in to get a combo is definitely a puzzle. Like when Vinny was telling Alex to back up because he could have gotten rid of more cards.

Being incredibly reductive like that is not pursuant to understanding a game. It's like saying chess is "just moving pieces to catch other pieces in their path". Nothing puzzly about that, clearly.

@bigmike Great thanks for purchasing it! Glad you like the aesthetic. We wanted the game to feel sumptuous and finely crafted. A lot of research went into getting the costumes, locations and items historically accurate. We have seen a bump in sales on Steam since this Quick Look went out which is really great because we are a two person indie team (husband and wife) who hire contractors for the art+music - so having a good run on Steam makes a big difference to us. We are really hoping that the RPS article and this video will snowball into more coverage (and we've been emailing press and youtubers to ask then to try it out.)

@larrydavis You are dead right. The basic mechanic of one higher or lower is simple but in order to get higher combos/multipliers and clear cards you need to employ a lot of strategy. That much should be obvious from the video. The later chapters (there are 20) have very tough goals especially in hard mode, such as getting a combo of 35 or achieving 10 perfect hands or earning 6000 gold etc. They are possible but you need to plan ahead, use wildcards/jokers, use Undo strategically, use the powerups at well-timed moments AND have a bit of luck ;-)

@larrydavis: I agree we can disagree. Negative consequences due to oversight does not make it a puzzle.

I got way, way too invested in Alex winning that last hand. Needed some Chariots of Fire in the background.

Also, no shame in getting down with some Big Fish style casual games. There's a lot of barely functional crap to wade through, but there are some really good games to be found there. Nothing like throwing on a podcast or Spotify and tucking in to a heaping helping of Big Kahuna Reef or Slingo.

I was spoiled for the last hand by the comments, but it was something of a thrilling victory even so.

One more reason that GB is the best at what they do. I shouldn't have wanted to watch someone else play this game for 30 minutes. Also, I kind of want this.

@ShaggE Of course I'm biased but yes you are absolutely right. There are some really well-made classic casual games. Heck Plants Vs Zombies came from that whole casual scene. Sadly they are overlooked in the mainstream gaming media and so players miss out on some really great gaming experiences.

I'm trying to get Spooky Bonus (a highly-rated Halloween match-3) Greenlit at the moment as I think it deserves a wider audience that Steam can provide.

@greyalien: Yeah, that stigma of "mom games" really does them a disservice. Also, things like Diner Dash's later sequels are pretty hardcore, difficulty-wise. :P Casual in name only.

I'll be sure to check out Spooky Bonus. I love a good Match 3.

This has been perfect for my weekend - I was stuck at my computer doing work and this has been the perfect distraction whenever I have some spare time. Really pleasant atmosphere and involved enough gameplay to keep my attention. The challenge definitely ramps up quite nicely, even on normal. I was one round shy of a perfect 10 rounder in Brighton...

Also, as someone who lives in London, I can say it is all very accurate to what it's like over here.

@greyalien: how much time did you spend playing those Pyramid Solitaire pub games? I was completely addicted to those! Anyway cheers for making an unusual version of that for the PC, I will definitely be buying it soon :)

@slimepuppy Glad you enjoyed it! Yep it definitely gets harder later on, even in normal mode.

@sillyputtie Oh I've never played those on pub machines but have played them on PC as downloadable casual games. In fact Chapter2 of my game features a classic tri-peaks layout.

Just a heads up to potential buyers: the best place to buy it and support me, the dev, is to get it from my site: http://www.greyaliengames.com/ The second-best place is Steam (or Amazon or Apple) because they pay devs a good share of the revenue. Buying it from other sites results in as little as $1 in my pocket, which kinda sucks.

This is just like Fairway Solitaire that I played on my iPad a few years ago and it destroyed my free time. I would play it when I laid down for bed and play it for at least an hour each time...

@abendlaender: As someone with a PhD in Literature, I think I'v earned the right to say Jane Austin sucks. Part of my problem with her novels are more about how they are so myopically concerned with upper middle class life. They do somewhat satirize genteel culture but simultaneously revel in it. Then again, I also love Henry James who is somewhat guilty of the same, so I admit it's largely a matter of preference. Nevertheless, Jane Austin sucks.

I had the same observation when I read Pride & Prejudice. It's not enough of the subversive work you want it to be when we currently hold a critical view of class issues in that society. So it can definitely be argued that it's not enough of a satire to distinguish itself from what it satirizes.

With that said, I think there's a place for semi-ironic indulgence in that period. Knowing that we know better, there's a humor to adopting that posh affect, especially the further removed you get from it.
