I recall the first swappable weapon in Cave Story having a similar boosting effect, which helped with the platforming. Is there a concept for it on the Wiki?

Been noticing a distinct volume difference in QLs lately (with east being way louder than west), but this one also has a good deal of scratching going on. Maybe take a look at the audio mix and try to equalize it a bit ?

As somebody from Detroit, it's getting really fucking tiring hearing the GB guys constantly talking shit about it. A city is a place where people live. Insulting a city is to insult it's people, and there are in excess of 5 million of them around the Detroit area. It's in poor taste. This is not the first time I've heard Alex talk about it like this. Drew did as well in "The Crew" Unfinished video recently.

@nothatso: I guess you haven't noticed that the whole world shits on Detroit. And any real no-holds barred look into the city in recent past indicates that it is in a pretty awful state.

As you said yourself, a city is a place where people live. It is not its people. You can observe that it's got issues and have sympathy for the people who live there at the same time.

@meauntienora: No actually I have. That's part of living there. That doesn't make it any less tasteless. I assume you don't know anything about it's history, you know only about the negative things you hear about it's present. Nothing of what caused them. Defending this type of behavior is ridiculous. Saying it's okay because somebody else did it is clear "whataboutism". Imagine regularly hearing the media of your own country verbally shitting on you for 5 decades and you might understand the defensive mindset that comes with being from there. Never mind the fact that metro Detroit includes one of the wealthiest suburbs in the country (Bloomfield Hills) or a city annually ranked as one of the 5 nicest to live in in America (Ann Arbor).

People don't care about that, or the history, the music, the architecture, the contributions to American culture, the famous and influential people from there, the former status as the wealthiest city in America, or the people in general. They don't care that a primary contributing factor to Detroit's problems was that the US government refused to pay for the retooling of factories that had been retooled to produce tanks, jeeps, and planes for World War II, effectively forcing the automobile manufacturers to build newer and cheaper factories where labor costs were lower. They don't care that the city-proper was built for nearly 2,000,000 people, but was left with 700,000 taxpayers to fund it after years of emigration (mostly to the suburbs). They care about getting their kicks by insulting those who are down. That is pathetic, especially coming from people who live in the same country.

@alex and everybody. Little factoid to go alongside this Quicklook: Ada Lovelace is named after someone who many consider to be the first computer programmer in HUMAN HISTORY, who just happened to be *gasp* a lady. She was the only "legitimate" child of the poet Lord Byron. She assisted Charles Babbage with his papers demonstrating the mechanics of an "Analytical Machine" and she wrote a program for this real-life steampunk computer to work out the Bernoulli numbers. As detailed as their notes were, they never actually got around to building the Analytical Machine, but there's a little group working to construct it today. I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much evoking of her name in campaigns to get girls interested in STEM careers. It still seems that if you mention "Lovelace" everyone is only going to think of Deepthroat.

Really don't like the huge modular blue levels with 3 green enemies randomly spawning. Just super bland and boring. All I see is 1 tileset and 3 enemies... well, because that's what that area is. The majority of this Quick Look was 2 colors. Could use way more variety.

@nothatso: Hey, you know what? You're right. It was a dumb, easy joke on my part, thoughtless in nature, and there's not any good excuse for that. I apologize for taking the easy gag without considering how the people from there might feel about it. I sometimes let my jokiness get the better of me and don't think about what I'm actually saying. This was one of those cases, and I should have thought better of it.

Alex is a trip. He has a weird voice, but towards the end he could say most anything and I would think it funny.

I envision him as the target audience of Black water Asylum, Not the humor but the art. Of course he did not like that game.

As for this game, I can't play these for very long.

To be fair, we didn't really see much of the game since Vinny spent the majority of the QL dying over and over in the same place.

@nothatso: @meauntienora:

So I'm from New York, and have lived for a little while in Los Angeles. So basically, two of the places in America that, at least in the media's and the popular culture's view, are treated as the total opposites of Detroit.

And I just wanted to say, after visiting Detroit last summer: the city really gets a bad rap.

Sure, its got its problems, I'm not going to deny that. But the way people talk you'd think it's a warzone or that stepping out of your car means you're guaranteed to immediately get stabbed, which is not even close to the truth. Detroit has lots of really incredible architecture, some unique and amazing art, the people there seemed resilient and strong, they have delicious food, and the people and the city honestly appear to have some creative and promising ways of dealing with the admittedly crappy hand they've been dealt.

nothatso, you have every right to be proud of your city, and after visiting there I've struck any stupid "lol Detroit" jokes from my inventory. Rock on, Detroit.

Now Gary, Indiana, on the other hand ...

@nothatso: After reading your comment I honestly had a little personal heart-to-heart; and I'm gonna stop shitting on places and cities I know little about. And you made me start to think about what other opinions I have that are just regurgitation of the media or the internet (I base too many of my videogame opinions off of Jeff's opinions... I gotta stop that, Red Dead Redemption and Mario Party are fucking awesome)

And i'll stop shitting on Portland Oregon just because I'm from Portland Maine and nobody Ever talks about My Portland its' always the Other one... even though Portland Maine is the largest city in the state of Maine! and has a cool history where Massachusetts basically burned it down, TWICE! And... No, Peace.

Anyway, just wanted to say you make a good argument! I am now Pro-Detroit.

That's big of you to apologize. It's easy to forget that Detroit used to be a good place to live.

They had some amazing history and hopefully they can sort it all out and become great again.

I felt like Alex's reaction was based on knowing this...naming a computer hacker character Ada Lovelace is a bit on-the-nose unless it's actually some kind of alternate history or time travel nonsense. The *other* reference is a bit before my time though so I didn't really know about that (though I guess there was a recent movie about it?)

Re women in computing, many such campaigns I've seen tend to mention Ada Lovelace in their promotional materials (or even name events / days after her). She's not quite as famous as Marie Curie or anything but I wouldn't consider her as obscure as the tone of your comment suggests.
