People who have played a bunch can you specialize in something else instead of just farming? Like can I be a shitty farmer but a fucking Captain Ahab fisherman and make a decent living?

You can just fish a lot and max out your fishing skills but you need specific crops for quests and the community center. But you're not forced to but you'll be locked out of potential unlocks.

Like a whole day of fishing or spelunking will bring you 3-5k which adds up really quick but a whole field full of cranberries in summer will give you 15k+ every 4-5 days or whatever when they ripen.

There's an unlock system so it's best to be decent all around but there's no fail state or anything if you're a lazy farmer so just have fun with it.

If you like Harvest Moon and combat, try the Rune Factory games out (Harvest Moon spin off series).

@efesell: Well if you master fishing, pick the "fish are worth 25% more" from the fishing skill tree, and know where the better fishing spots are you can easily pull in 8-10k daily just from fishing.

Played this all weekend. It's a great game! I'm about 2 weeks into summer at this point and I have a more carefully planned out growing area than I did when I first started and a chicken coop. Also getting further down in the mine, engaged in quite a bit of fishing, and so on. Feel like I've done so much already but also can see there's a LOT still to come. I've also come to appreciate that there's a lot you can do even if your energy is low like laying out paths and socializing. I should probably do more of the social stuff because the people in town have interesting personalities.

I know that happend a bunch of time ... but that one dude made this game makes this even more impressive to me. And I'm interested in how the multiplayer will work once he patches it in. It's a really relaxed game.

The game seems really neat. Saw the development blog a while back and wasn't sure if the finished thing would turn out good, but this looks great.

The fact you need to water every plant one by one seems cringeworthy and tedious.

Wow , when i first saw the intro to this game my first reaction was "i bet the big corporation is gonna buy out the village and tear it down to build factories or something", and then the jojomart appears. Not exacly as i called it but still pretty close.

When the governor tasted the soup and went "..." i thought he was gonna drop dead lol

Half of this game looks fucking amazing and the other half seems mind numbingly tedious and boring. I've been on the fence about this since it launched and was hoping the QL was gonna clear it up but it really didnt :( But it's only 10 bucks so.. fuck it i guess i can try it

also i hate that fuckin artstyle

@mcblemmen: With an un-upgraded watering can you do water one by one. With upgrades you go up to 3, then 5, then 3x3, then 5x5 wateriing as once. Also you can get sprinklers to water in an 8 tile radius or 24 tile radius around them so it isn't really all that bad with upgrades or planning. Also you can buy a Joja mart membership and it kinda changes the story a bit since you lose the community center/bundles and it's replaced by Joja stuff.

I find it interesting that Dan is so against the mega corporation in this game while he often speaks very highly of Walmart on the podcast.

Maybe this is a New Dan though? Is New Dan a farmer's market shopping, organic product buying, bespoke sandal wearing kinda guy?

You're cool either way, Dan. You do you.

Something to keep in mind...Stardew Valley was created by one person, indie developer Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe on the Twitter.

Thanks the QL! And also the discussion in the comments is appreciated as someone with no experience with Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon.

This was a valuable examination for me because I think it's convinced me not to purchase it. I was really close to picking it up based on the hype alone, but look what it does to people showing off the game--"This thing, no wait this thing, no wait this thing!"

Instead of the sort of "productivity engine" that some games excel at, this looks like a series of distractions interrupting each other. Does that make sense? Is that too harsh? Something's really rubbing me the wrong way.

That said, I have a soft spot for fishing minigames (no idea why) and this looks like some top shelf fishing minigame.

Edit: Not trying to be a negative nelly. I'm fascinated by what I don't understand, and this is no exception.

I think I get what you´re saying. And I kinda thought the same thing. There is that productivity aspect to this too, but it seems to not really be the focus, but is kinda obscured by the rate at which the game introduces new stuff.

Looks cool though, if it rains this summer...

I'm tired of pixel-art in games but I like the visuals of this one, it reminds of the look of some RPGs on GameBoy Advance.

I haven't played a single other video game in the past 4 days since getting this. Fire Emblem, Arkham Knight I just started recently, other PC games... all put on hold because I can't stop playing this damn game.

This is exactly the Harvest Moon-type game I wanted after being a huge fan of the SNES, N64 and GBA versions.

FINALLY a Harvest Moon comes to PC :.)

Got a lot on my plate at the moment, but there is no way I won't have this game next time I have to fly somewhere.

I'd also totally be into watching Dan play this for another 50 to 100 hours. Hearing him say "I really hope it rains tomorrow" brings back so many memories.

I bought a duck egg, put it in incubator and any day now I'll have a duckling among my chickens. I cannot believe how excited I am for this.

For the first couple of hours I thought this game was tedious and boring. I was wrong, the tedium was meditation and the boredom peace.

Shouldn't this be under Unfinished, rather than Quick Look? I know the game is nearly complete, but I think the devs have a roadmap of what is going to be added to the game on their steam page.

@danryckert: You mentioned wanting to only go down into the mines when you had a lot of energy because you would get tired swinging your sword around. That's only partly true.

Swinging a sword (or other weapon like a club) or using the scythe does notuse energy. The thing that tires you out in the mines is swinging the pickaxe to break rocks to find the ladder. You can attack enemies (or clear grass back on your farm) for free, energy wise.

As far as I know, the only items that use energy are the fishing rod, the watering can, the axe, the pickaxe, and the hoe.
