Why do people care about Mario games? The platforming looks like a nightmare and platforming is the only thing you do in the game. 12 hours of them.

Guess I will be buying a Wii U again to rent and play this game, and then return the Wii U for a full refund from where I bought it (a place that rhymes with ballmart). Yes I am a bastard, a cheap cheap bastard. Sorry Nintendo :(

I'm generally not that interested but this looks like some manic-ass fun.

The giantbomb crew plays the game how I'd like to play it, but ugh.... I have 3 autistic children I babysit, this game is going to be a Nightmare like New Super Mario Bros was.

Jeff mentions that the ending of Super Mario Galaxy was insane. I beat SMG in like 2007 so I don't remember what was so insane about it. Can anyone fill me in? Wasn't it just Mario saves the Princess yet again?

hearing this second hand but it's basically like SM3DL in that you think you've beaten the game but then mario comes out and says NEW GALAXY and you've got a whole crapload of new levels. basically killed my friend's will to continue playing lol.

I really want to buy a Wii-U now to play this, but damn this game looks so easy. Anyone know if this game is actually challenging?

The platforming is usually really good. There's a lot of room for skill even though the games themselves don't usually require much of it until late game (sadly). Lot of neat systems going on that does vary up the action. That cat suit looks amazing in what it lets you do with the climbing and the dive kick.

Game looks fucking fantastic (of course it does, it's a Mario game), but still not enough to justify purchasing a Wii U for me. The Super Mario Galaxy games were easily some of the greatest games of this generation, without a doubt, but even then, with those two games and a handful of other exclusives - I still regretted purchasing a Wii at full price. After cutting through the handful of great exclusives on that system, it really just turned into a paperweight. You REALLY have to care about those first party Nintendo IPs to justify buying a Nintendo system, in my opinion.

I look forward to playing this and whatever great Zelda title pops up down the road, but only after I can buy one and the games at a cheaper price, probably a year from now or so.

I really wished they would have played some kind of 4-player Mario game during the Extra Life stream. Need more quick looks with more than 2 people playing. I always find them hilarious.

As for the story of Super Mario Galaxy, I'm guessing they are referring to Rosalina's back story and what happens to Mario's Luma at the end of the story.

I'll probably get a Wii U next year, its first party titles are starting to add up. It's a shame Nintendo still hasn't been able to court third parties exceptionally well though - as good as Nintendo's games are, personally that's not enough to spend much time with their systems.

F*&k, with this and Mario Kart you ask the question. Why can't the other two get their shit together with the mascot thing? I remember even back in the "Crach Bandicoot" days, that was just a cheap knock off of Mario 64. Give Japanese development all the shit you want, but these Nintendo guys know the secret sauce and no-one can get even close!

@eribuster: I think they've talked about before how in the ending of SMG a character implies that Mario is doomed to repeat this song and dance with Bowser and the princess kidnapping for all eternity. Or something.

I really didn't get that out of it, even going back and replaying it after the fact so I just don't see it. I think it was first brought up during a goty podcast.

I think it's hilarious how Nintendo does the whole "you're a shadow on the wall" mechanic as a one-off level while other people base their whole games around it.

Also, a surprising amount of original music, not just remixes. I like it!

Edit: Those goombas look like the ones from Super Mario World.
