It's worth noting that some of the Top Spin devs worked on this.

Dan should know Pete Sampras at least... Or Billie Jean King? Not sure how Agassi makes the cut but not Sampras...

I hate that this and AO Tennis ate each other rosterwise it's kinda why I only stick to Mario. Wish they had better ways to get all the stars ala NBA 2K & Live.

Tennis, anyone?

Wouldn't that be nice?

As a big tennis fan this game bums me out. This Top Spin games were great, my favorite tennis games. I think a number of those folks went on to this too, but I don't get the impression it worked out. We haven't had a good tennis sim since Top Spin 4 in 2011, and as much as it'd be nice if Mario Tennis turns out well, it doesn't fill that gap...

Is there an error in the Quick Look at 22:40 and onwards? The voices seem to repeat themselves.

Cripes. How's it possible that this game looks worse than the old Virtua Tennis or Top Spin games?

I picked this up slightly discounted, decided to keep it despite people's reaction. I will say the gameplay is mostly enjoyable as someone who played a lot of the first two top spins, and a little of 4. The polish is definitely not there and it needed more time in the oven, but if you enjoy tennis it might be worth picking up when the price drops and they fix it. One major complaint has been aspects of gameplay that are bad, ignoring the fact that these improve as you level your player up and their skill increases. With all the defenses being stated, there are still infuriating moments where I feel the game fails spectacularly, but they are few and far between. Overall disappointing, but there have been worse tennis games.

I am failing to see the reason why would you pick this up over Virtu Tennis 4. There doesn't seem to be any meaningful advances, especially considering the 60€ pricepoint

Don't like these indoor arenas at all. Tennis should be played outside. Hope we get a new Virtua Tennis someday.

This led me to watch the old quicklook of Virtua Tennis 4 and my god that game looks so much better than this. If that was what this was and it was a new game I'd be all over it but this current gen tennis game looks terrible in comparison.

Sixty dollars and it's missing players and official stadiums/tournaments and has no online play. Plus the character models look like the beginnings of a Monster Factory episode. Um...I'm wait this one out.

So does Dan know Federer solely because he's the only publicly prominent man in the world who thinks the Solid Snake headband is a cool look?

I feel like this quick look of a bad tennis game is the place to say this: if you want a really, really awesome tennis game, do not sleep on that new Mario Tennis. I'm honestly kind of stunned at how much I love the demo. If you have a Switch you really owe it to yourself to give that a try this weekend while the server is still running.

"Because there are no Virtua Tennis games on modern consoles" would be the obvious answer, I would imagine.

Also, while this game looks pretty mediocre in its current state, it would be nice to have a not-cutsey-cartoon tennis game available for tennis fans. Mario Tennis might very well be a great game, but saying "If you want to play a serious tennis game, you should play Mario Tennis" is like saying "if you like apples, you should eat this orange instead." ;)

I seriously doubt a tennis player can't hit the baseline from the net without sufficient upgrades. Maybe some shots require you to actually hold the power meter instead of tapping it :)

This looks like a pretty poor package to me. It's definitly a good time to release a tennis game , but this doesn't seem any better than Virtua Tennis 4 or Top Spin 4, with some aspects looking worse. Those games were released 7 years ago! Especially the campaign looks poor to me. 'Select stat bonus from the menu, or play a game i guess' is not very enticing.

I guess that's the sad state of affairs for sportsgames that have been abandoned by the big studio's. after 7 years, a new indie tennis game is still an inferior product to the ones that people remember fondly. Best you can say is that this one actually works on your shiny new console.

This game bums me out so much. I played way too much Top Spin 4 and no one has tried to make a serious tennis game since. I had hope when I saw some of the developers of this game worked on Top Spin, but this looks like a half-finished mess. As much as I enjoy Mario Tennis, it's about as close to a tennis sim as Mario Kart is to a racing sim.

@cameron: Not even half-finished according to the articles in this post: Tennis World Tour was "only 20% complete a few weeks before its release"

My French isn't great, but I read a few of the articles in La Monde including the interview that forum post references. It sounds like the publisher basically just pays small developers to make bad niche sports games. The interview is almost refreshingly frank. The CEO says fans should never expect a rugby game to be as good as FIFA because that would cost about $15,000,000 and they could never make that much from the ten countries who care about rugby. Presumably similar reasoning applies to tennis. While I expect tennis has a wider appeal than rugby, it's certainly not big in North America or Japan.

It still sucks that Tennis World Tour is bad, but hearing the developers basically had no publisher support makes me hopeful they could do something better in the future.
