I finished this game up yesterday. Wooo boy it is a technical mess. I dunno if it ever got higher than 22-25 fps, with regular dips into the teens. The camera and character movement feel like a shitty version of several PS2 games. The puzzles fit that description, too, not much going on there.

I have no interest in going back to it, and if I wasn't getting paid, I wouldn't have finished it in the first place.

still think this looks good, guess it takes a certain type of person to enjoy these games. though i still have the ico/sotc collection waiting to be played. damn you sony, start failing in the console business so we can get backwards compatibility already!

1. New video player looks like shit, but from what I tried in the Beta it works just fine.
2. This game seems out of place at this point, just seems aged and tired this much later.
3. Boy, that framerate isn't very pleasant.

Honestly, it's a pleasant surprise that this and FFXV, both games that took 10 years to come out, turned out to be actually, at least, decent games. They aren't broken in any major ways and are playable. The Anti-Duke Nukem Forever.

This all reminds me of an imaginary, non-existent short film that my mind has been generating for the last 15 minutes or so...

...the movie theatre is packed. The long-time director has made his penultimate film, a sequel to previous works. It has taken many years, many setbacks, much hype.

The film is only just beginning, but the crowd begins to leave. They murmur and whisper about how the film was nothing like they expected, the graphics are outdated, and that the director should have retired years ago. Some say to each other that they will demand a refund, rather rudely in front of the director who stands patiently in the back, gauging the crowd.

The room empties. The director stops the film. He leans against the wall behind the projector, his head coupled beneath his arm as he contemplates his own Earthly obsolescence. And then, a tug on his jacket! He turns and sees a small child, with large, trembling eyes looking up at him. The child holds tightly to his chest collector editions of the directors' previous works, much to the director's astonishment. The child asks, of his own unadultered artistic curiosity, "can I see the rest of the film?" The director perks up and acknowledges, "of course!" The film plays on, as the child sits alone in the otherwise empty seats as the film picks up into a vivid and wild imaginary story that only a child could appreciate. The director stands behind the projector, arms crossed, armed with a grin- for this, truly, was his masterpiece...

The interaction with the bird dog cat looks infuriating, but Alex seemed to be enjoying the game despite how terrible this quick look made it seem.

Perhaps this was just an unlucky series of events and normally the cat bird dog is more responsive? Maybe the progression from minimal interaction to (I assume/hope) complete control over the dog cat bird over the course of the game is rewarding enough to forgive it being frustrating at first? Maybe the framerate and camera control is so terrible (having to look the opposite direction from your target while jumping off the chains is awful) that the interaction doesn't seem that bad.

The animation of the cat dog bird looks fantastic and the environment is beautiful (if a little dated) so hopefully it plays better than this quick look suggests.

@nagafen: I think the lighting is quite good, and the way the things' feathers rustle in the wind look great. It seems to have come at the expense of the frame rate, however..

Jeff gave Fallout 4 hell for frame rates that were better than this.

@ioftd: I like it personally as in real life when you're trying to get your Dog to do something, it takes them awhile to get it too. To me it just adds a sense that that Dog thing is real, it would feel too gamey if everything was instant.

At times this game looks amazing and Trico looks like an honest-to-goodness real creature. Then he starts whipping his neck around and the camera clips through his face and it all sort of comes tumbling down. I'd really like to play it but it does look kind of frustrating in quite a few different ways.

Also, trying to do GOTY stuff with a virulent cold spreading through the office sounds like a nightmare. You poor people.

@nasher27: the one thing that has worried me is the PS4 version frame rate suffering and the pro being fine. I hope it doesn't become a thing because I'm not going to buy a PS4 pro as Ive only had my PS4 a year.

To be fair, Duke Nukem Forever wasn't broken or unplayable either. Not in any way that I encountered, anyway. It just wasn't very good.

I really like the way Ico and SotC control, so I assume I will like this one as well. It is a particular style, and I get why people wouldn't like it, but it isn't bad just different.

I imagine a lot of people will ignore the frame rate issues since it's a different kind of game, more puzzly than actiony. So the the choppyness probably doesnt get in the way as much.

I've only played a bit of Ico and this seems a lot like that so I doubt i'd like this very much. Does Shadow of the Colossus play better than any of these games?

This game looks terrible. I've watched a few sites plays of the game and all had that choppy frame rate and bad controls. I don't understand why some sites are rating this game higher than their FO 4 reviews.

Vertigo is a spinning sensation that can happen even on the ground. Thank Alfred Hitchcock and Saul Bass for making everyone think it's to do with being up high. Acrophobia is a fear of heights, which can induce vertigo.

Dan, you asked about the Dodo and whether it was bird like or duck like. The Dodo was a giant flightless pigeon. As in it belonged to the pigeon and dove family before it was hunted to extinction.

I'm gonna have to side with Dan and Jim Sterling on this one. In game that has puzzle elements you cannot have wishy washy responses to the environment or mechanics. When I see the 'animal' not being able to do basic things like eat food all I see is bad AI or physics.

This game looks like a test of frustration where you are constantly being pitted against poor implementation of game mechanics and it constantly breaks me out of any immersion in the world because of it.

It depends on what bothered you about Ico, I suppose. The two games don't feel significantly different, so if you didn't like it on a deeply fundamental level, I can't see you liking Shadow of the Colossus much more. However, for me and I think a lot of others, the main complaint with Ico is that the main appeal is in exploring and climbing around a neat dreamlike world, yet it all too often forces juggling the escort mission type mechanic with tedious and simplistic combat, which grows old very quickly.

Shadow of the Colossus, on the other hand, is a very focused game. You ride your horse to a boss fight and figure out the puzzle behind beating the boss, and that's it.

So, like, I guess to boil what I'm saying down to a more understandable statement: In terms of fundamentals like controls, camera, etc., I wouldn't say Shadow plays better than Ico. However, I would ultimately still say it's a better playing game because it doesn't consistently pull the player away from the thing it does well to complete things it does poorly.
