PC or PS4... if I get it on PS4 I might actually turn it on for more than just Destiny.

This looks incredible. I love the new kind of crazy that this Trackmania brings. I'll miss the old Trackmania stupidness, but at the same time, the jank might not be missed.

Kinda bummed they only looked at the PS4 version.

I'm far more interested in what the PC version looks like.

Maybe they'll play it on UPF.

This seems like a real good arcade style racing game. Trackmania has come a long way.

Getting a little tired of Dan's WWE references in everything. Not every one can relate or understands the references.

Seems kinda weird they neuter the craziness a bit but then introduce a bonkers co-op mode. I guess people will bolt on a bunch of stuff to this down the line anyways.

I don't understand why anyone would pick this up over Trackmania 2 for half the price. It's mostly just repackaged and remodeled content from content (other than the addition of Lagoon) from the previous game in a more restrictive shell that allows far less user creativity. The whole fun of the series for me was the ability to run custom servers with features like track rating, track voting, custom music, custom car models, and a host of other options that have been stripped to make it more 'console friendly'.

Some people, and I'd guess a vast majority of console gaming people, don't want to interface with the act of installing custom mods like, at all. They don't even have PC's that can run Trackmania to begin with, which is why they bought a console in the first place. Those people just want a fun, colorful, arcade racing game with unlocks and leaderboards.

I think every time Jeff talks about Trackmania he really oversells it as this craaazzyyy thing. It's really not. It's a racing game with custom hud elements, a pretty free-form track editor and the ability to import custom cars. It's not like halfway through a track the game turns into a first person shooter, and then there is an 8bit Zelda level you need to pass through to get nitro boost. You just drive a car through the tracks, except there is custom music blaring out your speakers and a ton of HUD shit covering most of your screen. That stuff is fun and it really speaks to the user-made multiplayer experience, but it doesn't make the actual game - i.e. racing - any more crazy.

This is an appropriately sized down to console standards, gussied up version of Trackmania. For those that want those dubstep Cher remixes the PC version is always waiting. For everyone else, Turbo is still a pretty fun arcade racer.

You don't have to install any mods on PC unless you are hosting a server. I've never done it and I've played 50+ hours of trackmania 2.

Local split-screen is totally lacking classic TM Time Attack mode. ("Everybody play 5 minutes, then see who won.") It's strictly Rounds. ("Player crosses finish line or hits reset, game immediately ends.")

It's a glaring oversight, super disappointed last night when we played it on PS4. Posted to their forums; hope they add it. (It's obvious in Jeff/Dan playing. For example, it's at 18:57.)

@skytylz: I've never played it on PC, so all that custom stuff is just pulled directly from the server? That at least simplifies it a lot. That said, the whole PC thing being a hurdle for many is still a thing.

This game is another example of my taste not lining up with Jeff Gerstman's AT ALL. I love GB and I value hearing Jeff's opinion, but he loves the things I hate and hates the things I love about 75% of the time.

I played the beta of this and loathed it. I didn't like the feel, I didn't like the bite-sized tracks and I found it quite tedious and dull for something that's supposed to be crazy and wild. Ugh. I put about 30 minutes into the beta and deleted it.

That said, that two driver mode seems pretty awesome.

Yeah it pulls everything from the server. All the crazy hud mods and leaderboards are set by the server, for better or worse.

A friend of mine who never played TM before compared it to Trials. I never thought of it like that, but I can kinda see it... at least in the Campaign.

Found this on the maniaplanet forums, re: Speed-I/O-Meter option.

Someone said that TM:Turbo felt a different than what they were used to- presumably TM2.
This was offered as a reason:

For gameplay, feelings can change for many reasons, including in the perception: it's an observe phenomenon that can be explained in various ways. But rationally, you can have the input libraries, graphic drivers, operating systems, framerate etc. In Turbo, we have included a Speed-IO-Meter that helps you measure the speed of the input-to-output time it takes by asking you to synchronize on visual or audio feedback to caliber :)

This has got to be the fastest time to a wrestling reference ever. "Good job", Dan.

Game looks surprisingly really cool, since I didn't expect much of a dumbed down console version. Might actually have to get this. The random local multiplayer seems especially great.

Educating Dan on Trackmania was amazing. This looks surprisingly great. I expect it to be ultra sanitized but it seems to maintain a fair bit of Trackmania's downright wackiness and international vibe (counting down in different languages, signs changing language, etc). The lack of the horn seems like the most disappointing thing frankly.

Did anyone notice the weird Die Hard call-outs?

In one spot it says "TRY HARD 2 - TRY HARDER" in the Die Hard font, and in another place it said "Yippee Ky Yay".

I was worried this wouldn't be dumb enough, but it seems to have just moved a lot of the server dumbness into the local multiplayer modes. Might just have to get this for the PS4.

@humanity: I can very much understand the appeal of this to console users where the dumb server features in Trackmania 2 would not have worked or made any sense. My biggest complaint is that private player run servers were not even included as an option for the PC version.

@humanity: You seem like a reasonable person. I'm tempted to pick this up as my zone out game on PC (think of it like my personal Stardew Valley) and primarily want to play SP and unlock tracks (at first at least). Would your recommend me to pick up this version (Turbo) or Trackmania 2?

@ectoplasma: I guess that depends on your personal approach to games.

If you like reward oriented progression classically found in console games, as in striving to get gold medals in order to get the gold but also to unlock items hidden behind said medals, then I would say go with Turbo as it makes use of that "do something to get something"mentality. You will be a lot more constrained with what you can do because it is a consolized version of the very malleable PC original but the flipside is that you get a lot more streamlined, and depending on what you prefer, a lot more structured experience. In the future Turbo might get a lot more mod support, but as of now it seems like it's a fairly tight package.

If you just want to zone out and race for the sake of racing, and you don't necessarily need outside stimuli to push you along, then I think Trackmania 2 is a more robust package. You don't really unlock anything and it's up to you to get custom car models and such, but the PC modding and level making scene is going to be a lot more intricate than whatever the track editor from Turbo will be able to spit out - at least for the time being.
