I was almost going to buy RYSE because its on sale right now for $10

I don't know that there is a mouse in that hole. Maybe it'll never get the cheese

I assume XP is not a useful commodity in this game

EDIT: at the end of QL. I've decided to sit on this one. Its way to hyped.

I've been pretty hyped to try this game, it's just going to have to wait until the massive whale that is MGSV is done crushing my free time.

A clever game presented in a minimalistic wrapper. Like Lisa for example. It looks really interesting and has some clever writing, but large chunks of it just don't look all that fun to play.

Combat ramps up into some pretty intense bullet hell type gameplay and all of the bosses have their own unique one-off mechanics. LISA plays very much like its inspirations whereas I'd say that Undertale just looks like it.

The actual game mechanics are super fun though. There's amazing design with each of the bosses, and I never found myself not wanting to *play* the actual game.

@efesell: @glentennis: Hey guys fair enough, this is just my opinion of course. I loved Hotline Miami because it appealed to me from a gameplay perspective and was similarly really interesting. I guess I was just never a big fan of those retro RPG mechanics with the text bubbles and so forth.

I have a friend who constantly tells me I need to play random Visual Novels or text adventures that almost no one has played because they're secretly the greatest games ever made and I really need to broaden my horizons and play those games, and he makes sure to mention it on a regular basis and has for like 4 years. When I saw this game making the rounds among certain crowds I thought "Oh no, I'm going to be hearing about how this is secretly the greatest game ever made for the next few years, aren't I. I'm not going to be able to escape people constantly butting into discussions about other games with this game, am I. It's going to be one of those games where the 1-developer-against-the-world tale and myth surrounding the game obscures what the game actually is, isn't it."

There are neat things I see in it and I looked up some of the music to listen to (It's amazing) but I just can't get past the way the game looks enough to pick it up. I'll probably end up playing it eventually and I'm happy some people have found their GOTY, but I look at this game and think "ugh, I dunno....." Bummer, too, because I would obviously be a happier individual if I allowed this to be right up my alley.

@marokai: I don't think anyone is a worse person for not liking this sort of stuff just like no one is bad for liking it. Hearing people say it's their GOTY feels like a bit of hyperbole but man what do I know - maybe there's an entire contingent of people out there who just dislike triple A development for whatever reason and this game is some sort of love letter created especially for them. Ain't nothing wrong with that, it's weird as heck to me, but no one should care what I think when it comes to how they choose to spend their free time.

It's not even that extreme. I played The Witcher 3 and thought it was about as good as an open-world ARPG can get. I played this and thought it was more fun. They're just different games. It's not an isolated occurence either. Neither of those games are much like Avernum 3 or FE:A, but I don't think it's crazy to rank the 4 in any possible order.

@humanity: The thing is, this game isn't what it appears to be on the surface.

No one is going to get hyped up by seeing a trailer or screenshots from this game.

But at the same time, you can't just give away what makes the game great without ruining the experience for someone else.

The game is asking you right off the bat to take a leap of faith and trust that it won't disappoint you. Coming out around the same time as MGSV, the game pretty much makes the statement, "I don't have even a fraction of the budget of that game, I have significantly worse graphics, and my gameplay is far more simplistic. But if you trust me, I'll show you a good time."

So many people speak so highly of it because they want people to feel assured that this won't be a waste of time or money, and that it is still very much worthwhile.

Not everyone is going to be convinced, but that fact that so many people are speaking up for it when there are so many other big hitters that have come out recently should send some kind of message.

Regarding Austin's comment on Shin Megami Tensei. You can absolutely talk to demons in Persona 1 and 2 and do various things with them and their emotions which rewards or punishes you depending on the combination of emotions.

I think Persona 3 and 4 are the only SMT games where you can't talk to demons. Would have made boss fights in P4 so much more interesting if you could just defeat them via calming them down.

I love this game beyond all capacity for rational expression. Anyone with any tolerance for JRPG mechanics (and even those that don't) should play it. It feels super weird and stupid to say that this and MGS5 are my two favorite things that I've played this year (there's certainly other reasonable GOTY candidates, but I haven't played Mario Maker myself for instance, just watched).

This game seems like it could have something to it. I kinda want to see where it goes and I really liked that boss battle music, but any time a random encounter popped up I groaned.

Basically I'd like to experience the character of the game with a minimum amount of required work, cause' too much of what it seems to be offering up for gameplay seems like work I don't want to do.

Nah there are several of them that don't have that mechanic. It's a mechanic I like in theory but in execution it usually ends up being fuckin' terrible because you exhaust unique dialogue within an hour.
