Call me a Brad Shoemaker apologist but I truly wonder what has gotten into parts of the GB community lately to reflexively fling shit at this man like a bunch of retarded monkeys. I for one enjoy his snippets of random knowledge.

Brad quick looks: a platform for his massive ego.

Has anyone ever just come right out and called him a know-it-all before?

No offense Brad, knowing things about stuff is rad, but relaying and correcting people constantly can be......off-putting?

Edit: What a badass looking flight game! I definitely want to play this for myself. Nice flying Drew!

I just find it gratifying to learn a lot of things about a lot of things and try to share that stuff as much as I can, but wow, okay. Must be my massive ego instead.

I never got that at all.

Listening to those guys talk about things around the game, like the historical context or even the music in the background, that is the most interesting part of it.

What would you like them to say - 'shoot that guy'?

During WW1 planes often went to and above 15,000 feet without oxygen or pilot heating, they used whale grease to smear on their faces for insulation, heavy coats and boots etc. but flying without oxygen at such heights took it's toll on many pilots post war who died of respiratory illnesses.

Speaking of Midway. Here's a little tidbit about the Xbox / DirectX.

"The logo originally resembled a deformed radiation warning symbol. Controversially, the original name for the DirectX project was the "Manhattan Project", a reference to the US nuclear weapons initiative. Alex St. John, creator of the original Microsoft DirectX specification, claims22 that the connotation with the ultimate outcome of the Manhattan Project (the nuclear bombing of Japan) is intentional, and that DirectX and its sister project, the Xbox (which shares a similar logo), are meant to displace Japanese videogame makers from their dominance of the industry.23 However, this meaning is publicly denied by Microsoft, which instead claims that it is merely an artistic design."

Just for an alternate point of view, to me it merely comes across as you straight up loving to learn things, and in turn to share them with people. It never feels like there's any agenda behind it but that.

Just know how negative the comments can be so I figured I'd just offer an opposing opinion.

Aaaaaaaaassss for the game this seems damn cool. I like the versatility in what level of simulation you want, it looks pretty as hell, and the combat looks satisfying. I'm all the way in

I want someone to hire Vinny to design missions for flight games.

I'd suggest to new players not to play Arcade with a joystick. Historical and Full real is where you should use the joystick. Arcade is mostly for people with mouse and keyboard

I can't believe the guys on this Quick Look would rather be a ground troop than an air pilot in WWII!

Being a pilot seems like it would be so much better! You get to live on an actual base, you get to feel like you're battling your enemies directly rather than waiting to get randomly blown up by them, you get to save Tom Hanks from a tank and single-handedly turn the tide of battle, and above all, you get to pilot what is basically a flying motorcycle with machine guns on it.

Only a big ol' pessimistic grump would fail to see all the ways in which that would be awesome! Not that war is awesome. But you get what I mean.

I just tried playing this with the 360 controller and it's almost impossible to keep your aim steady when trying to shoot down other planes. The slightest movement of the stick sends the reticule every which way while the plane herks and jerks like a wild bull trying to buck a redneck. Not recommended for anyone wanting to play from afar with a controller.

Looks better (read: more realistic) than World of Warplanes.

I guess the Hardcore History episode Brad mentioned is one of the old ones you have to pay for? It's not on my podcast feed. I just finished his series on the Mongol Khanates which was awesome.

Nice try Drew. You did a good job pretending to NOT be a sleeper agent by flying only U.S. airplanes. But you gave yourself away to my discerning eyes when you used the kamikaze tactic, which is about as un-american of a military tactic as one can employ.

Are you trying to call Randy Quaid's character in Independence Day un-American? Them's fightin' words!

Most flight sims are fine with a controller. I'm sure this will be the same. I use a wired Xbox 360 controller for racing and flight sims, and it's perfect for those.

So let me get this straight: you think the people involved with all of the content of the site are annoying, and you dislike the videos which form probably the most major component of the site. But somehow, you don't dislike the other content these people who are "so damn annoying" produce and therefore, despite disliking a majority of the content put out by the site, don't dislike the site?

...okay, then.

@brad

: I watch/hear you talk now for over 10 years. Even if I never met you, I believe you when you say, it is not an ego thing.

But you "amped" up your "style" in recent months and years - more audible/visible to "us", the public. Letting people "know" more of the "real you"?

Reading is great! Don't get me wrong. But repeating a bunch of leftovers in your volitile memory banks, does not make for an informed discussion? "Knowledge" is more than having read through a wikipedia (or any other) page, or books. Saying something out loud and having something to say about something - very different things?

I find myself unable to listen to some podcasts or Quick Looks, because you dare to touch on some "real-world", serious topics, but what happens is, you spit out this information, in a way that sounds undisputable, unchallengable, definite, and in a tone of voice that wants to convey an aura of knowledge, that is not there, only to backpaddle from the dictum, in the next sentence (much like your reviews, in the old days?).

Why some people may come to the conclusion, that you may be on an "ego-trip", it is just the way you structure your statements? As if you were "there" during WWII. As if you KNOW the difference between this and that, when all you did was only read about things, and paraphrazing it, simplified and inaccurate, without ever beeing asked or challenged by people, who have a more clear view of the topic you feel so compelled to talk about.

From "It was horrible", "Definitely!", "This is the best.", "The rest is crap" to "Ok, maybe...", "I'm not sayin..." kind of sentences? And then the others chime in, with Vinny, starting as the voice of reason at first, but all turns to goofy nonsense and people listening are left with half-facts and a lot of stupidity, while of course, they take all things as a fact and adore you or hate you*, like "people on the Internet" always do.The trademark of this site.

Giantbomb is a bad place for "facts", IMHO.

I know, it is hurtful to read (from complete strangers) about yourself, being criticized. Nobody likes that. It is cheap and easy to do. But you are in the business of "public" and "publicity".You make a living "being Brad" the "brand". If you yourself hate it or don't like it, does not matter at this point. People don't really know you. But everyone has an opinion about you. (QED)

"Pulling a Brad...", "It's a Brad thing to say" ... will one day enter the Oxford English Dictionary, not just the Urban one. I guess, the greatest thing on the positive side(!) is, that you are old enough, to not let it get to you and don't have to give a damn. You should not. Also, ignore this post. It came from (virtual) brotherly love & affection.

*) their idea of "you", of course, never the "real you".

@missacre: Giant Bomb is very community driven. The personalities on this website are part of that community. It's why any of us help fund these awesome duders.

If you're just looking for video of videogames, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense why you would continue to watch the videos here if you don't like the people in them.

I like flight sims a lot, so I started watching it, hoping they would shut up and spend more time playing the game instead of fucking around. I stopped watching about 15 minutes in.
