Looks better (read: more realistic) than World of Warplanes.

I guess the Hardcore History episode Brad mentioned is one of the old ones you have to pay for? It's not on my podcast feed. I just finished his series on the Mongol Khanates which was awesome.

It's actually the one about the morality of dropping the atomic bombs, though he actually spends about 90% of it detailing the entire history of air warfare leading up to WWII. Pretty sure it's still on the free iTunes feed, or at least it was about a month ago.

Man, these guys are so damn annoying, and they never get to the gameplay. This is why I hate these quicklooks.

I too love hanging out on websites I hate.

I never said I hated the website. The site I like, it's these guys I find annoying.

You don't hate the website, but dislike the people involved in all of its content?

I don't dislike them, I just don't like the videos they make.

So let me get this straight: you think the people involved with all of the content of the site are annoying, and you dislike the videos which form probably the most major component of the site. But somehow, you don't dislike the other content these people who are "so damn annoying" produce and therefore, despite disliking a majority of the content put out by the site, don't dislike the site?

...okay, then.

As I've said before, I'm here for the video games, not the people. I know most of you guys here have some sort of crush on them, and that's cool, but I spend most of my time here reading about games, and roaming the forums. I don't know why all of you are antagonizing me because of my opinion.

People only find your opinion confusing, because there are many websites out there that cater to your interests. It doesn't make sense that you spend time on this one.

@missacre: It's certainly fine if you don't like something. You absolutely have the right to that opinion and shouldn't be criticized for it.

The Giant Bomb guys have a history with flight sims and most of us here absolutely love the way they handle them. To someone just watching one it might seem like a bunch of nonsense, but to us, it's exactly what we want (usually a bunch of nonsense).

There is quite a bit of flight sim video content on this site, maybe go back and give some of those a try. Having seen the origin of it all and how these usually go might inform the way this quick look went and give you a bit more understanding as to why. You certainly don't have to, you've got nothing to prove to anyone here. But I can say that you're in the minority when it comes to how you see these videos. So if you expect it to change much, you might want to consider just sticking to trailer releases and the like on GiantBomb.com.

FYI in case anyone is interested, Oculus Rift support is in the game's advanced options in the launcher. Not sure if this also applies to the Steam version. I doubt you have any competitive chance since the resolution makes it hard to see planes far away but in free flight mode it's pretty amazing. Twenty minutes of barrel rolls and flying upside down and I was feeling completely sick and had to lay down, as I should. If you have an Oculus Rift I highly recommend trying this game.

Vinny makes this QL gold

As for the game I have been playing War Thunder for a couple of weeks and its a total blast to play and actually controls really well with just a m/kb. It looks beautiful and the damage models are amazing. Just about anything on the plane can get disabled or blasted off like wings, flaps, rudders, hole in your fuel tank, engines caught on fire etc. There is nothing more satisfying than swooping in behind someone and shearing off their tail or setting their plane on fire and watching them plummet to their doom.

I will also admit though that being free to play also has attracted some real shit the to community. People love bitching about ramming or complaining about how other folks cant play blah blah blah etc.

If you even have a mild interest in this game then you should try it, after all its free

For realsies Battles.

Further to Brad's question about oxygen in open cockpit planes; even the closed cockpits of this era for this type of plane were not pressurized. Oxygen does not become a problem until you fly above 10,000 feet for any length of time. General rule on that is 30 minutes + between 10,000 and 12,000 feet requires oxygen supply. Anything over 12,000 requires constant oxygen supply or pressurized cabin.

Short range planes from WWII designed for ground strike and air-to-air engagement would rarely get anywhere close to that kind of altitude.

In modern day, single and dual engine prop planes are still usually not pressurized unless they're really fancy and expensive.

Based on my previous experience today, I took another soft 80's rock song and played it with this video and it played well as a background song. Mr. Mister - Broken Wings. Something about Drew's attitude and voice with ballad light 80's rock. Laid back.

Ok. This game is cooler than I thought it was (I didn't watch the QL passed 5min).

Occulus Rift support. (The different difficulty settings are quite nice (arcade to more sim-style)

Multiple Controller support. (from mouse/keyboard, over gamepad (twitchy), to HOTAS and TrackIR as seen with Drew playing.

I didn't think, I would play this at all, after being burned out by the World of Warplanes Beta (no game for DCS fans). But this, might do it for a couple hours now and then. Too bad, I now have to buy everything. No - I have to. "Stupid games" - haha

trick style - ... camera view
trick style - ... camera view
Game has some nice Post-Processing options.
Game has some nice Post-Processing options.

I chose
I chose "Movie" mode for the "cloud" effects, with no frame drops (constant 60 FPS). You don't have to have the latest, most expensive GFX card to do that.
... game also runs in
... game also runs in "custom resolution" settings - for the multi-monitor, cockpit-room crowd.

This is quite cool, for a F2P MMO. Randy Pitchford is wrong, about "proper, commercial" games?!

re: submarine vs. airplane military duty,

Air force easy. No contest for me in that question. Submarines are tiny. And they smell. And your crew mates smell. And everyone is losing their goddamn minds with anxiety and stress. And also, if your sub gets even slightly damaged at any sort of depth, you're fucked. I think submarine duty is the worst thing possible to choose. :/

Knowing is actually a totally OK movie. It's dumb in a few spots, but overall it's surprisingly good.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that. Just my opinion, obviously, but I'd put it in my bottom 5 worst movies I've seen from start to finish. I found it interesting and engaging until the…plot twist. The idea of knowing what is coming and being able to do absolutely nothing about it is kind of intriguing, and could have made for a good movie, but they tried to have their cake and eat it too, by allowing some of the characters to live, via a deus ex machina, and—I cannot stress this enough—bunny rabbits. Everything in the movie was rendered moot by aliens and bunny rabbits.

As for the QL, it lived up to almost all expectations. Too bad about being unable to bail out with a parachute. =[

Also, commentors…need a Snickers?

Isn't it like the first rule of F2P games that the further away from real money your currency is, the more likely your customers will be to spend money because they are confused over the real dollar value of the item they are buying?

Is there any reason there are 2 currencies, other than to obfuscate the real dollar value of in game items?

Ahhhhhhh, Brad fact dropping(and general conversation) irrationally hurts me.

Aside from that, the game does really look nice, visually and that track IR seems pretty well implemented. Very cool(if inconsequential) to see the hands and feet moving.

I saw this video a few weeks back and started playing shortly after. I've always been into WW2 era aviation and this game hits the spot. Yes, I'm one of those guys trolling high altitude in a P-39 Airocobra - the first time I blew a heavy bomber in half with that 37mm cannon...it was love.

This game's Eagle and Lion system seems goofy as fuck, but the fact that $1 seems to get you a whole lot of eagles relative to the cost of a plane (150 eagles per dollar, and planes generally cost about 7 eagles, if I read it right) at least keeps it from being exploitative with its insane currency conversions.

Would you rather fly that plane or know for the rest of your life whenever you sleep, WHEREVER you sleep, worms will appear whose only ambition in life is to crawl in your ear.

EDIT - Also Brad it was AT&T...with the You Will commercials. Really prescient set of ads with one notable exception.

@missacre: Giant Bomb is very community driven. The personalities on this website are part of that community. It's why any of us help fund these awesome duders.

If you're just looking for video of videogames, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense why you would continue to watch the videos here if you don't like the people in them.

I like flight sims a lot, so I started watching it, hoping they would shut up and spend more time playing the game instead of fucking around. I stopped watching about 15 minutes in.

No Caption Provided

Too bad for you, the majority of people come to these expecting the GB Flight Club to do it's usual shenanigans. If you want just pure gameplay, with no annoying people talking, there are literally dozens of streaming and video services out there, offering just that.

But Duders expect fucking around, they expect A LOT of fucking around, after all that's what's the most fun part about any kind of simulation!

@moonwalksa: Yeah, I am usually pretty critical of "freemium" schemes - but based on the lions he accrued versus the cost of things, it doesn't feel particularly bad. I could spend the usual $15-20 price of a digital game and get a decent amount of content for it.
