It seems like calling back to an old game/type of game and combining the old game feel with smart, modern changes is a very hard balance to strike.

Kudos to Yacht Club and Shovel Knight I guess.

I'm watching right now and holy crap, that log boss makes me never want to touch this game. Bashing your head against something while always having in the back of your mind "Maybe I'm missing a special ability the game isn't telling me about" is torture.

I want to play this game but if Dan can have a lot of trouble then I think I'll get really frustrated easily while playing this.

I heard there are some control issues with this game try to be really old school Banjo but I am glad the kickstarter people got the game they wanted.

This looks like a game to pick up on an eventual steam of Xbox Live sale. The look and style it has look awesome to me, but i looks like it has some of the same annoying issue that most n64 style platformers not named Mario 64 usually have.

This doesn't look too bad, might pick this up. Shame they don't do anything with the Pro, but it seems to be a solid 30 on consoles so that's good. Well, on PS4/Pro at least.

Also Breaking Dan should be a thing.

I agree with Dan and Vinny that this game has some weird control quirks (especially in the ball mode), but it's weird to me that Dan would bring up Super Mario Sunshine because I always thought that game controlled like hot garbage on fire.

Also there's apparently a prelaunch patch going out that will attempt to address some of the camera issues, which seems like the main universal problem everyone's having with this game.

After playing the toybox I didn't have very high hopes for this game, which is a shame as I'd like it to be good. Those platforms that make an error sound when you turn them green and smiley say a lot really. There's a whole lot of nuance missing in this thing. It seems poorly thought out or not thought about at all.

@geirr: it's a rare game, exactly as they said they'd do. it's probably a good one of those, but it doesn't try to break out of that mold or "modernize" itself, at least from what i've seen and heard. if you like those kind of platformers this is exactly what you're looking for, it seems.

I would consider trying this out if I wasn't about to be full time into Persona 5.

Also, wow...this game is Banjo af. "its classic!" I don't think Dan knows the difference between something being good, which is why its classic, and something that's classic just because its old. Some of this is definitely the latter but it still looks potentially interesting...when I can get it for $20. That boss battle looked...really bad.

i do wonder how frustrating it must sometimes to hit these dumb roadblocks in the course of making quick looks. obviously this one wasn't insurmountable. but i wonder if they've ever done a do-over just because they got hung up on one little part and didn't think it'd be entertaining to watch them bash their head against something repeatedly for an hour. (not blaming them here at all, it did seem really fiddly and maybe should have been telegraphed better. and it was still entertaining!)

I think it becomes exponentially harder when you add that Z-axis. Not to take away what Shovel Knight accomplished, there are plenty of examples of even MODERN 2D games that managed to shit the bed (Mighty No. 9, anyone), but once you introduce camera controls into your throwback game, I can't imagine how much more complex EVERYTHING becomes.

Dan did this all the time at GI on their Replays, where he'd stink it up and claim he was trying everything. He'd hand the controller over to the next person who immediately sees that he wasn't pushing an obvious button or whatever and have no issues.

Also, I'm not calling it out as a bad thing that ruins the video or whatever bullshit that is. It's hilarious to me that this is still a thing.

The worst part of this whole thing is that there are now many multiple reviews and articles out there with a main theme of "maybe n64 era platformers were actually not that great and it's all just rose colored nostalgia" when that is absolutely not the case. Compare this to even modern collectathons let alone classics, and it becomes clear that with the budget they were on they just couldn't give it the polish it deserved. Giving these kind of false blanket statement is very likely going to hurt the possibility of future good collectathons.

Weirdly enough, the guys are thankfully not falling into that trap, but into another weirder one where Dan is claiming this is just as great the old ones but just not for him; even as he is clearly having an awful time struggling with clunky control, camera, and level design.
