Literally anyone else who tried "Don't talk about my game that's already out" would be ripped to shreds.

Is there any other verbiage about the 24 hours thing besides the "for public safety" one? Cause honestly that makes it seem like a tongue-in-cheek joke...

i gave it a shot for like 20min and idunno, it didn't do anything for me (not because i don't like storygames and feelsgames, i love gone home and life is strange and before the storm, and stuff :( ). and it was annoying that it let me.. do... that thing, at the start? and then was like haha, fuck yoooooooooou.

also i liked the art in undertale a lot more. everything in this game was kind of creepy and offputting.

Judging by the google search I just did, you may have just coined the name for a new genre.

Every time I feel like I might actually give Undertale a shot, I catch a glimpse of some the sorts of people that call themselves fans, and then I. Just. Can't.

It really is a lovely game just tunnel vision onto that.

@tgjessie: the best I can tell you is to try to ignore it. Focus on the Austin Walker style fans, not the others. If you can't, you can't. There are a million games. Can't really argue the ways we decide what to skip.

Holy shit! Undertale is genuinely an amazing and special game and I'm so happy it's getting some wierd psudosequel. Also people bitching about uploading the video "early" and is "disrespectful" is Toby Fox need to climb down off their high horses.

I fail to see how posting a video is bad when you could just play it yourself. It's out there.

You know what's even better than complaining about how this upload might be disrespecting the creator's wishes (a situation which Ben is already out in front of)?

Complaining about AND insulting the people who were complaining! Just... just watch the video. It's fine, y'all. You can enjoy the thing or don't. No one is on fire, everyone will be okay. Eat some candy and enjoy the rest of your Halloween.

If you're a big Undertale fan and really want the best for this game, please consider not pushing people away this time. It's already starting again. Just... chill please?

Already played through this and it didn’t really connect with me, and I loved Undertale. It has some interesting ideas though.

And he put the thing out, so of course people are going to talk about it. I get that he doesn’t want spoilers out there right away but it’s pretty easy not to click a video.

@jesushammer: Absolutely not, the developer has stated multiple times that the fan discussion about the game was so bad that he stopped updating it, guy asks for one day without that and people spit on it? Just makes me fuckin sad.

@tgjessie: True, but by that metric, one look at any Steam discussions or gaming forum would be enough to stop wanting to play games altogether.

Undertale is wonderful. Play it and pretend the fandom doesn't exist.

Every successful game eventually develops a terrible fanbase- Like the way all food turns into poop. Go to a nice restaurant, enjoy the meal, and don't pick the table next to the bathroom.

@squashysquish:Yeah, given Ben's tweet that it was unintentional I think it's all fine. It wasn't a huge deal, just struck me strangely to have an immediate video of something the dev had obliquely asked the Internet to pause on for a bit, given that the site doesn't normally shoot for super-timely content. It is certainly not something to go crazy about or have dominate the comments entirely.

I'd far rather talk about the new spins on the mechanics he's hinting at in the demo(?)/beta(?). Undertale was amazing, but I really don't think the concepts or story could survive a whole new game, so it's good to see some branching out. A "perfect dodge" bonus, some more complex battles with parties/skills, and layering those into the basic chat/spare mechanic sound like it could be interesting.

Would people coming into the comments of a quick look video to complain about how quick said review video went up count as discussion too?

I was severely put off by the Undertale fanbase when that game initially launched. I finally got around to giving it another shot on Switch. After seeing the fan response in this comment section (among others)... I think I'm good again.

He definitely did not enjoy the toxic part of the undertale fanbase which you very clearly demonstrate.

@cheshirestray: At what point did you confuse a 30 minute Quick Look as fan discussion? Is there a threat of someone accidentally spoiling themselves here? What exactly is the problem?
Coming in here with an attitude fished straight out of a toilet bowl, spewing hot garbage is exactly the kind of shit that's earned the Undertale fandom it's infamy.

This looks awesome. I did see something retweeted by one of the (former?) 8-4 guys about this but didn´t know it was a game. I might wait a bit to play it, downloading it from some website without it even having its proper name is kinda weird. I consider myself a big but casual fan of Undertale, so hopefully this attitude will still work out.

@briarpack: Actually, he specifically spoke out about how people posting extensive video/screenshot coverage of his narrative/humor based game hurt his sales (less relevant now) and encouraged many people to forego playing the game themselves. Also, I'm not sure you have any idea what "rustic" means.

@cheshirestray: did you somehow miss all the videos popping up on YouTube, on twitch and the articles written by various publications. Nobody gives a fuck.

As soon as Toby hinted there was going to be an Undertale 2 I knew the following day was going to be a dumpster fire. Undertale super fans are really just the worst.

Edit: for what it's worth I thought the first game was great, and even though I have zero interest in Deltarune, I'm sure it's fine. But people freaking out about the 24 hours rule... come on.

This is super cool, I love the idea of randomly putting out a mystery thing as a teaser for a sequel and wish more games did it. It makes me want to play Undertale but then you read the comment section and remember why you haven't yet.

@cheshirestray: There is no harm done, it's 30 minutes of footage. There's no legitimate reason for the games press (or anyone really) to not make articles or videos about this and that's not what that disclaimer is trying to prevent. Believe it or not, Toby Fox is not trying for a complete media blackout.

I couldn't stand Undertale after finally playing what is probably most of it on Switch. This seemed like a cool treat for fans, right up until fans make me feel like if I was Toby Fox I'd be better of not releasing the game.

But part of me feels like that's exactly the response his games thrive on. Way too much drama over nothing.

Hahahahaha I'll continue not playing Undertale because this is one of the single worst fandoms I've ever come across.

@instak3ller: Undertale is great and I don't really care about its fandom. It is EXTREMELY weird to see people suggest that Giant Bomb should ignore its journalistic/informative capacity as a website so that a dude can have an optimal release strategy or whatever (that he hasn't even clarified and fans are just guessing at!).

As someone who DESPISES undertale and its fans, I totally agree that posting this is a dick move. If you genuinely missed the 24 hour request thing then just hide/delete the video for a day, is it really that hard? If they accidentally broke a AAA embargo they would've almost certainly done that.

@aarbypls: the developer put out a free game and asked people not to spoil it for literally a single day, and you talk about journalism? games journalism isnt "journalism" per se... i emphatically disagree that a games website has a "duty" to cover a free download in a way that goes against the wishes of the game developer. I dont think anyone meant any malice, but this is not at all a situation where the Giant Bomb Defence Force really needs to come out to hassle people who actively respect the dev's wishes
