@sbarre: They explicitly did not get user permission that is the whole reason it became an issue in the first place. "Vogel does admit, though, that "the launcher makes an encrypted local copy of your localconfig.vdf Steam file" automatically and without explicit user permission". No one could give them permission to access that data and transmit it, cause they never asked permission to copy it in the first place.

"Still, Sweeney acknowledged that Epic making local access to Steam files without direct permission might justifiably rub some users the wrong way. "You guys are right that we ought to only access the localconfig.vdf file after the user chooses to import Steam friends,"" that is them admitting to being morally not technically wrong. You really need to learn the difference kid.

Can you source your security researcher comment?

Steam already had competition in gog, uplay, origin and others. I get it though you saw a bunch of fancy marketing and bought it hook, line and sinker.

I have no problem with the idea of installing the Epic launcher, but I play games like this on my couch through Steam Link.

Evidently there's a two week return window. Maybe I'll try it out and see if it plays nice with the Steam client.

That intro cutscene was fun, at first glance it was just like the intros for Privateer and Frontier: Elite II, but then it turns out it's actually the Talespin intro.

Kinda telling that neither of them had played Privateer because this is pretty much note for note Privateer in everything from the visual designs, cutscenes and the space cultists. Both the cockpit and space station designs were pretty much identical to what you'd see in Privateer, some of the ship designs were pretty similar too, and of course the landing/take-off cutscenes and the camera angles on the stations/planets were pretty much identical too. Not that it doesn't look fun, but I wish they would bring something novel to the table other than "We made 95% of Privateer, and Firefly's space western stuff was cool too, so that's the other 5%".

I'll probably pick it up once it comes to GOG in a year or two anyway, since I enjoy space sims, but even then, I don't agree with Will on that "nobody is doing stuff like this anymore" - the Privateer/Elite style space sims never died, they're literally the only kind of space sims we've gotten since 2001's I-War 2, and there have been a lot of them, at least one a year including X4 as recently as last year. What I really miss is the properly campaign oriented stuff like Wing Commander, I-War and Freespace. Wing Commander's branching paths and storytelling in particular.

The ship painter was pretty rad though, they didn't notice, but the UV map was actually updated with the decals they applied - which also means that you - instead of putting logos in your decal folder, could put textures in there and map the ship in 3D the same way you apply textures, so no need to edit that image in an external program.

Man, there is A LOT in this game. Perhaps too much? For me, it seems a little overwhelming. I need more direction in my space games.

whatever game service this is on, i dgaf. I will buy, day 0/1.

getting too old and tired to argue with hard stanced pc gamers these days, so I just willingly slipped into apathy over all of the epic/steam store thing, about as quickly as the epic store launched with Ashen, which I loved. Epic's store hasn't really 'wrong'ed me yet, so whatever man.

That aside, thanks for the quicklook! Man, August is turning into space month, love it.

This game looks pretty rad. Too bad they didn't mention anything about the supposed combat assistance in the game. Apparantly they wanted to get away from the constant circling and pitching around that plagues, really all, dogfighting games by using an auto-chase system. Would've love to know how well that works.

Heard bits about this over the past year or two and it seemed interesting. Didn't realize it was going to be full on Privateer/Freelancer

The Wing Commander-style cockpit and bright stars is a bit harsh on the eyes, but I like the retro aesthetics enough to power through

Looking forward to buying this and spending three hours figuring out a good setup for my hotas

@sbarre: I know you two are both mostly arguing ideological differences here, but as an aside and a fellow oldie I'd like to point out addressing someone with "Listen kid..." when you have no idea one way or another is very rude and makes you look like a complete asshole. If you're an older person you are supposed to be more mature then cheap digs like that.

Brad said they haven't done a modern ship simulator type game, but Elite Dangerous does every thing he seems to be looking for. It's very open ended and procedural, and a story is non-existent, but the amount of missions is basically endless and the game is gorgeous

I assume you haven't watched the whole video, but I explicitly said Elite Dangerous exists but that the lack of story has stopped me from getting into it.

I love the ship UI and the mini Photoshop but the combat seems pretty simplistic and the flow of this seems to be interrupted constantly by cutscenes, loading, and losing control of your character to watch the ship instead. I really wish in a game like this they wouldn't constantly cut between diff angles and keep you in fps.

Despite all the choices besides dog fighting it seems the whole game is based on dog fighting. Everspace was good but the combat got old real fast kinda wish there was a demo of this one to try!

Welp, time to try to go into a forgetful cryo sleep related to this game until the PS4 version comes out, because thinking about how cool it looks will just make me sad. God, I wish my computer was... anything other than shit.

It's like, I'm so bummed out it's not Rebel Galaxy 2. With the huge ships and broadside combat.
But I'm also happy I get one of these kinds of games in the flavor of Rebel Galaxy.

I played the hell out of the first one even with no up and down and the naval warfare I loved it.

@facelessvixen: Is a massive fan of Freelancer and this looks a decent modern version (though story wise nothing else has lived up to it so far). Now to decide if I wait for a console version or just get on PC.

The only reason I'm not using the epic store is because I'm too lazy to create another account. Never created a games for windows account and never did an origin ea account. Not going to start now.

I feel the same way, I was hoping this would be the big ship combat like Black Flag. I wonder if the combat changes at any point through the game. Or maybe an accessibility option that allows for the battleship combat instead of the fighter combat.

Love seeing bigwillystyle and busta brad on the same quick look, they nerd out on a frequency that I'm totally dialed in on.

The anti-Epic people seem to have forgotten how shady Valve has been over the years. People used to LOATHE Steam and they forced it on anyone who wanted to play a single game.

Point taken. I didn't consider it a "dig" but I suppose it could be taken that way.

I'm just tired of the uninformed FUD being spread about Epic, and the very real and unacceptable consequences that it leads to when people spread it, like the awful way the Ooblets devs were treated recently.

@tropesage 's arguments were just blindly parroting what other people were saying, and that have been debunked. Anyone who has worked in software and product development - and understands how software works under the hood - would know that the whole "locally encrypted file" debacle is blown completely out of proportion simply because people are looking for absolutely any contrived reason to be outraged at Epic.

I would say "people should know better" but my point was that young people won't know better, unless we tell them they should know better. But I agree I could have chosen my words more carefully.

I'm not interested in buying any Epic exclusives personally but everyone can do as they please.
I did just happen to find another awesome space trucker game that seems to be a bit of a hidden gem.

Avorion is on sale for like $10 on steam right now (or humble store full price) and seems awesome. has very positive reviews, ship building and even a few active multiplayer server. I was on a server with 21 out of 100 people around midnight on a monday.

I saw this quick look and kept thinking about it and then saw a review which showcased 3rd person and I now am in the process of waiting for this game to come out in one hour.

I really wish this video showed the 3rd person it looks so awesome seeing the bright color from the fire in your boosters and is less claustrophobic. Hoping for more fov options as it seems pretty zoomed in.

Here's hoping the combat doesn't get super boring but for 30 bucks this looks like an awesome game to tide over until control and astral chain in a few weeks.

My only concern about this game is that it seems to follow roughly the same blueprint as its predecessor aside from the change to the flying/combat, and the tasks eventually started to get a bit repetitive in the first game.

I have the game pre-ordered already, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Aside from Avorion, my favorite space trucking game in the last 10 years or so has been Evochron Legacy, released in 2016 and sequel to Evochron Mercenary which got some amazing Dave, Drew and Vinny content many years ago. Also has both single player and multiplayer with a similar amount of players online. DRM-free and made by one guy, and I think it's incredible.

I'm 30 minutes in and it's driving me crazy they haven't mentioned the music yet. I know nothing about this game and that's the most interesting part, so far. Is it streaming Spotify or something? Hopefully they address it soon or others here explain what's going on with it (like on the menu it says streaming: limited music)?

@lonelyspacepanda: there's 24 hours of in game music and the limited option means if you broadcast a stream with the game it won't play the songs they didn't obtain streaming licenses for.

I had high hopes for this after seeing the naval combat of the original was gone, but I was out within 30 minutes. The dogfighting just...doesn't feel good at all and the UI design is a straight up mess. The game looks pretty and the style is still on point, at least. Maybe grappling with the game for another couple hours would have gotten me there, but there's so much other great stuff out there right now it's hard to sink that time in on a prayer. I guess I get to see how/if the Epic refund policy works?

This game looks incredibly stylish and fun, but I wonder about the staying power it may have. For those that are playing it, and pretty far along in it, what do you think about it on a longterm playability? Is there enough to do that's fun?

This feels quite a bit rushed and shallow, but pretty much no review bothers to point this out.

Yes, the basic gameplay loop is snappy, quick and fun, but this thing doesn't have any legs at all. What you see in the QL in terms of ships/weapons is all there is, there are no real options, no new or higher tier equipment once you leave the starting zone.

In that context, it matters little if the whole universe is handcrafted, there's no reason to go anywhere after the first dozen of hours in the first zone, you will already have the best weapons in the game and all the equipment you gonna need.

This could have been amazing with some more actual content, maybe even level ranges for sectors, but as is, it feels more like a demo or prototype, just way too shallow.

From Valve "The Steam Client locally saves data such as the list of games you own, your friends list and saved login tokens (similar to information stored in web browser cookies). This is private user data, stored on the user's home machine and is not intended to be used by other programs or uploaded to any 3rd party service."

Or are you going to say that valve doesn't understand software and product development?
