@clapmaster: maybe but so far the game is completely linear. no ability to explore one area, find out that you are way too under leveled, and go back to a different area like a real souls game. the characters are also completely lifeless that dont factor into the lore. remember stumbling upon havel after seeing him or his gear mentioned in the loading screens? that was a clencher moment. this game is level X has enemy XA, level y has enemy XY. First you play X, then you do Y. etc...

also the biggest problem im finding is that there is no key queuing. hit space bar (roll) and immediately hold shift (run) before you complete the roll. you exit the roll and and walk as slow as humanly possible. same for reload, vaulting, firing, healing. it results in a frantic mashing of action keys while never really knowing if the action is going to happen or not.

calling this game dark souls with guns is like calling miller lite merlot with carbonation. its trying to do the same thing but not really even close in execution

Sounds like this game is still a lot of fun and should be judged on its own merits rather than forced comparisons maybe?

@ripelivejam: Awww, but I was going to talk about how this game looks like Left4Dead and/or The Division and/or Hellgate: London. :(

(Just kidding; this game DOES look neat based on its own merits, albeit a little janky.)

@clapmaster: Yah I've heard a few people in the comments mention this which is great because I'm a little burned out on this one specific aesthetic. Notifications seem to be broken again so I have to dig through comments to find answers..

As for scaling - well no, because the way it has classically worked in all games is that each area has a level scale. So you typically enter a little under leveled and tough out the new baddies for a bit, and by the time you leave you are a little over leveled so you feel good when you're wiping the floor with guys that were giving you grief when you first entered the zone. Then you move on and the cycle repeats.

Thats the system I've always preferred anyway because it always gave me a feeling of progression. Having enemies dynamically scale up to my damage output made the numbers become very arbitrary.

Ben was wrong, you can travel back to the small checkpoints if it was your last one. Just use the Return to last checkpoint choice.

Looked OK, I guess. Doesn’t seem to play anything like Bloodborne, though.

Classic choke job at the end.

I've been playing quite a bit of this game, mostly solo. Probably have around 16 hours so far. I like it, but it honestly doesn't have that much in common with a Souls game, and most of the elements it does take from those games are very superficial. It's trying to be a similar sort of experience on the surface, but it's actually pretty sloppy in its attempt and that becomes more evident the farther you get.

Souls and Souls-like games have very deliberate action with specific rules, unclear as they may be at first, for every encounter. Remnant's action can get very chaotic. That's not to say it's not good, as the core mechanics, while shallow, are satisfying when everything comes together, but there is a loooot of cheap bullshit as the game wears on. Simply learning enemy patterns and behaviors as in a Souls game doesn't always work. Some of the boss fights, such as the one I'm currently stuck on after about 30 attempts, feel like they are not tuned for solo play and end up being incredibly frustrating. It's really soured my opinion on a game I was otherwise enjoying a good amount until recently.

Overall I'm still liking it but it's not all good. Aside from some cheap design, the game is very linear with not as much room for exploration as I would like. Level design is pretty drab due to it being procedurally generated. The amount of gear you get is not up to the standards I expect from this genre. I didn't find another armor set until over a dozen hours in. I realize a lot of stuff is hidden, but you're never really finding stuff around the world or from enemies. Nearly all of it is from bosses, side quests, or special vendors, and it's very few and far between.

Aaaah, good ol' Brad. Man, I DO want more Brad content. I know he dwells with a great dark, and I'd love to have a "Giant Bomb makes Mario" with Brad as the course creator.

I wish I was better at these difficult (soulslike) games. Game looks fun. At somepoint I forgot this was a quick look and at the end thought it was a playdate. I would happily watch them play this again and defeat that boss! @benpack

This game is pretty cool so far. Its less Souls-y than I was expecting though, and its much more Diablo and Left 4 Dead.

For people who never liked dark souls originally and didnt "get it" and mostly thought it was hard, clunky, boring, and had limited progression or incentive to play along with not telling you enought about what to do....im surprised giantbomb now years later likes dark souls like games so much. Heck even other sites originally hated dark souls now its the bees nees. I think death stranding will be the next genra reviewers dont "get" then years later its hailed as the game ever game is.

IDK, Gamespot had Demon's Souls as their GOTY in 2009. Would actually be interesting if that would have changed if the Bombcrew were still onboard. Still, Vinny at least liked it. By the time of Dark Souls I think Vinny was a big fan and had probably talked two other Bombcrew into being neutral.

Game plays great solo until boss fights. The amount of adds and other bullshit really needs to be toned down, it's crazy. It's doable, but unbelievably frustrating. Watching co-op for the first time, and the boss fights look much more fun with other players for enemies to chase.

Solo boss fights are constantly like the ending with just Brad.

Okay, been playing this both solo and co-OP with both 1 and 2 other players, and I find solo play the easiest (although I still struggle with some bosses). Maybe it's the way I play, but I feel like I have more control over the encounters solo. Is it just me?

Hope they play this more on a playdate; looks rad and I'd love to see what people who've learned some of it's many secrets fair with it. Basically I'm looking for cheat notes.
