Hamaon does have a connection to stands, but it'll be awhile before that gets explained.

Now we're into the JoJo that I first stumbled in on and was still befuddled by since it was catching random episodes on TV and seeing unconventional competitions with a gambler and then a few weeks later I just so happen to tune back in to see part 1 with the gambler's brother and their particular chosen venue.

Thanks to this, I have since gone through and seen the entire Stardust Crusaders arc and yeah, still bonkers but that's what you're here for.

I don't remember, did the second episode of the show have the ED in yet? I'm surprised they didn't bring it up after talking up the OP so much.

This is a fine return to form. Nice recap and good discussion with mild tangents. I could've done without some of the grosser stuff at the end, but it didn't go on for half the episode, so it's fine.

Tam really got hoisted by his own petard with that "Jotaro must be called JoJo" rule. Love to see it.

The Aesop's Fable that Avdol recites is a threat to Jotaro. He says that the traveller was able to bear with the cold wind by wearing his cloak tight, but heat forced him to admit defeat. He's referencing his power as being fire and that Jotaro will not be able to defeat him.

No clue where Eyepatch got the coffin details with Erina and DIO but it's 100% not from Araki and shouldn't be taken as fact. She used the coffin as a raft and was found. Dio somehow got in a secret compartment and stayed hidden until found. Nobody knew he survived.

Nothing illegal about thirsting after Jotaro, he's above age of consent laws. And he's not real, lol.

Araki created stands so that anybody could partake in fights as they didn't rely on the users strength. They're essentially visualized psychic abilities, Magicians Red for example is just pyrokinesis. It's a real cool detail, not sure how well them being psychic abilities applies to later parts but yea lol.

Jojo OPs are the best.

Please call Jotaro just Jotaro! The main Jojos are rarely called Jojo from this part on, lol. I keep thinking of Jonathan when you say Jojo.

@shiro2809: agreed. The first 2 we're jojo's to me. They really stretch to get the JoJo in some seasons, lmao.

God a gross pimple-popping villain of the week would totally be a Jojo episode huh..

I have never heard the coffin story, it feels more like a fan theory, not like something Araki came up with.
In any case it just feels like a neat callback to part 1 to me, it's not a huge leap in logic that they rescued Erina and dumped the coffin which secretly held the remains of Dio and Jonathan. Dio's an immortal vampire, he'll survive anything if the plot contrives it.

Anyway happy to hear they enjoyed the introduction, Part 3 opens pretty strong and stays entertaining throughout, if a little overlong. I'm excited to hear their impression on the characters who make up the rest of the crew, and Kakyoin's weird mothercon line that Tam alluded to.

I still wish for more episodes per pod u_u

I'm not sure that particular rendition of the Coffin story is canon; then again, plot armor really requires no explanation lol.

Still my favorite show on the site!!

@shiro2809: If anyone is wondering it's from the novel Jorge Joestar, which is a wild read, (spoilers for up to part 7 tho), and is in no way any shape or form canon.
The Erina/Dio part of the novel is probably the best written character-wise (at least in the fan translation) the rest is like pure unadulterated wild ass fan fiction.

FYI:

  • The name "Stand" is explained by Joseph as they discussed, but also clearly refers to "Stand by Me" (like the song) in the JP lines.
  • Their existence is mostly a storytelling tool by Araki, who wanted a "visual representation of supernatural powers." Roughly translating the Wikipedia page's quote, he basically wanted to have an in-universe thing that can be shown actually doing the actions that result in supernatural phenomenon - such as bending spoons, breaking things, etc. - instead of just showing the result of the actions.
  • It's later explained that people can basically awaken to Stand powers through mastery of a skill or craft, and Hamon was one such skill that can lead to such an awakening.
  • The "star-shaped birthmark" thing obviously was shoehorned in during this arc in the manga; but as a little nod to it in the anime, you can see it on Joseph during Battle Tendency :)

I was fading on JoJo interest by the end of the previous chunk (the constant "you thought you defeated me but you didn't notice X" "oh you thought I didn't notice X but it is you who didn't notice Y!" thing was getting old for me), but One Punch was a fun diversion and I enjoyed this chunk of JoJo more than I had the previous stuff. I'll keep listening!

There was a discussion of how Avdul appeared out of nowhere and was not on the plane with Jonathan, but actually, as Jonathan goes to leave the airport with Holly, he turns over his shoulder and whistles to a shadowy figure who starts to follow after. It's not clear in the moment, but obviously that was Avdul!

When i first got into JoJo as a teen, I was that person that was sad hammon was gone, and wasnt sold on stands. Also the dynamic between Holly and Jotaro was too much for me.

The strength of later parts kept me following JoJo, but still to this day I am not fond of part 3.
