Quick Look: Shenmue III

also i'll definitely be playing this game with the original japanese voices. this is maybe the most japanese game series ever, even more than yakuza, and even if the english voice acting was good, it'd be weird

Edit- Really nice outfit on that girl with the emerald ear-rings. I've only watched a part of this QL, but in an odd way I am really liking the art of the game, as awkward as some proportions are. Also That lady coming on while the cows were braying killed me. Again...Awkward.

The dialogue in this game is like when you try to talk to Siri, but she only half understands what you're requesting.

It's been a fun game so far for me a few hours in. It controls well and is a fun modernization of what Shenmue should be.

How is Ryo's voice acting still so bad 20 years later

@jojjo333: It's definitely more Shenmue. It will do nothing to change your mind on the series.

Nelly is currently singing face-to-face to little girls on stage and making everyone extremely uncomfortable.

@mattcorb7: Because "fixing" Ryo's sleepy delivery would be like "fixing" Francis York Morgan's deranged grin. This isn't neglect, this is preservation.

Whether you should go with English or Japanese depends on if you prefer quaint, nostalgic dopeyness or something that's more apt for the setting and story vibes. I prefer both, which is frustrating.

@binarygod: please don't speak for an entire subculture of a generation, you're not doing a good job. Also niche does not equate bad. I for one don't give a shit about the popular opinion. The earlier games, and this one no doubt, are heavily flawed yes, but I'm so happy this game is finally here.

This game seems like one big really elaborate joke by the developers.

Is there any reason Vinny isn't in this? Why would they record this QL without him? Why wouldn't they do a playthrough of 2 before QLing 3? Seriously, does Giant Bomb have that little regard for the audience that they absolutely refuse to do something that wouldn't just be better for the site, but also because that's how you normally play series of games.... in sequental order? Is there any place where we can get honest answers from the crew?

a quicklook is not a series playthrough. Shenmue 3 would be getting a quicklook around it's release no matter what the status of a shenmue series playthrough is.

Man, there sure are some people in this forum section who're cranky that video-games-which-don't-appeal-to-them exist.

On the subject of inconsistent name pronunciations in this game, the narrator pronounces Ryo's, the protagonist's, name 2 or 3 different ways within the span of about 3 minutes during the "story recap" video you can access from the title screen. Sometimes he says "Ree-oh", sometimes he tries the (relatively) more accurate rolled R "Ryo" as a single syllable, and a few times he inexplicably says "Roh".

It's kind of incredible.

really what I want to comment is a request for yall to actually make a feature for this game... this QL was very entertaining.

When I see Chinese people, I also wonder why they look so sad like their faces are melting.

In regards to Alex's comments on "Xu" - often times different Chinese names are romanized into the same thing

I've known people to pronounce the name "Xu" the way they do in this game, esp if the game takes place in China. It sounds like a Mandarin pronunciation.

@knoxt: It sounds like you really understand this, I don't think allot of people will but I got what you are saying and I agree. Anyone who loves Shenmue, like.. loves it, should be excited about this game they made Shenmue 3, they didn't make Shenmue 3 - it's an incredible achievement.

When Alex said the game earnestly believes in itself in a way that few other games do I couldn't help but think of Death Stranding.

This connection is kind of weak. The two games could not be more different, and I can see how one might like one and dislike the other rather easily.

So then, what was the point? Dan likes Shenmue but he also doesn't like this other, INCREDIBLY different game, RDR2!

It just seemed almost like an attempt at an unnecessary dig at Dan over nothing?
