Quick Look: Shenmue III

This is exactly what I wanted from Shenmue 3. Best looking Dreamcast game I've ever seen.

Wow they sure made a Shenmue game. This reminds me we need an Endurance Run of Shenmue 2, so we can get an Endurance Run of Shenmue 3.

Glad to hear the positivity for what this game actually is. It'd be so fun to watch an Endurance Run of it. There's something included in the main menu that serves as a catch-up of sorts, too.

I'm with nearly every other commenter here, please do a Shenmue 2 Endurance Run, and include Abby as well. This would be perfect material. :-D

The cow conversation scene had me in fits for a good 2 minutes!

Just a head's up, but that knees over the toes thing being bad for the squat is a myth. If that were the case every Olympic weightlifter in the world would be paralyzed. If your ankles are way long and your femur is relatively short, you have no choice but to push your knees out or else bend over parallel to the floor.

How does Dan tolerate/enjoy the useless time wasting bullshit of Shenmue but can't stand it in RD2? I understand it's a different type of game, but still.

I'm going to be nice cause he's so precious so I won't say anything mean.

He had an expectation owith RD to be a certain way, not like Shenmue. He played Shenmue when he was a child and has reverence for it in a childish nostalgic way so he can tolerate the time wasting bullshit.

I love RDR2 because of the time wasting stuff but this game looks like hot steaming garbage from every angle.

How the hell does Dan love Shenmue but hate RDR2 and Death Stranding? I love the dude but that don't make no sense.

I made a joshing comment about how Dan has loudly proclaimed his hate for animation priority, and slow movement and flair that gets in the way of gameplay - cause Dan wants to "play" games and not watch a movie or something like that. Dan got so incredibly worked up about this during the RDR2 talks that he would not desist until everyone agreed that the game was the biggest disappointment of that year. It was a vote so fair is fair I guess! Yet he seems to really like Shenmue 3 which is ironically the exact embodiment of everything he was arguing against during those GOTY talks. So thats the connection which is a little stronger than "weak" in my opinion.

Now I generally don't care, I'm not trying to get back at Dan all this time later or shine some beacon of truth stemming from some boiling anger I've been keeping down. I'm sure anyone that follows the site sees the correlation and sees my comment and is like "I know right el oh el" chuckles at the absurdity and then moves on. If you felt offended by it on behalf of Dan then hey man I have no qualms about apologizing if it impacted your day negatively. It was a joke, hopefully this clears things up.

Huh I too also got weird vibes hearing about a director's unchanging vision when comparing Shenmue III to Death Stranding. I guess the difference is I just find Shenmue III funnier in a way less annoying way, comparing say Ryo bumbling through a conversation that leads ALMOST nowhere to Sam tripping in a river and watching cargo float away.

@lazyaza: The original English dub used mostly non-professional voice actors who were chosen, by Yu Suzuki for their resemblance to the characters. Not making that up. Looks like they got the same guy back after all these years.l. Honestly it would be more jarring and less “Shenmue-y” at this point if they fixed it. The Japanese voiceovers are actually good though.

Also, a lot of the dialogue follows Japanese speech patterns, that’s why you get a lot of repeated information, ie I’m looking for some thugs. Some thugs? Metal Gear is notorious for that as well.

@rounderob: This seems a lot more charming and less pretentious than the other two games you mentioned. Maybe that's part of it.

this Quicklook was hilarious and enjoyed watching it. Props for Alex for all those funny commentary, because WTF is this game even...

Watching this reminds saddens me. It's cool for the truly dedicated that this launched, but feel it was a wasted opportunity. My only hope is that it does well enough for a proper current gen hardware squeal.

I was initially a bit boomed by the lack of Vinny on this QL, but it's probably one of my favourites in recent times. This is not a game I think I would enjoy playing by myself, but watching them playing it is really fun.

I loved the Shenmue ER to bits, so I hope we get a another one.

The amount of redundant dialogue they recorded for this seems insane.

@jeedyjay: Haha, that's one argument. I think what bothers me is the way he dismisses any game he doesnt like as trash. Vinny does a good job of calling him out on it but he continues to do it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dan not only being okay with, but thoroughly enjoying the deliberate pace of this game is just too much to address...

@rounderob: Dismissing games they don't like as trash is the norm around here, and Dan isn't even one of the more extreme examples of that. His signature complaint is, "I haaated it."

Glad to see they pulled off imbuing Shenmue 3 with Shenmueness.

The dialogue in this is somewhere between Twin Peaks and the Room.
