I know you were speaking off the cuff, Alex, but as a history person I have to issue a correction. Sorry. It's not my choice. Post-war Germany was occupied for a few years by the Soviets *and* the US, UK and France, but it was all turned over to the independent (Soviet aligned) German Democratic Republic and (NATO aligned) German Federal Republic. Obviously the Soviets exercised considerable influence over the GDR and other Warsaw pact countries, but the same was true in a lot of ways of the US and its spheres of influence. Anyway, good stream.

If Dan thinks Civ is impenetrable, he should see Crusader Kings...

Civ is REALLY not that complicated.

Hey Dan Slings are not thrown rocks. You place a rock in what amounts to a kind of slingshot, spin it around, and launch it. I am willing to say there is no way you could successfully use a sling, though I'd be pretty into seeing you try.

And a bonus correction: Oligarchy is simply the rule of a specific elite class. A rule of the wealthy is generally referred to as a plutocracy or plutocratic oligarchy to distinguish it from aristocratic nations. These national typologies are super squishy terms so it's understandable to get them slightly mixed. I mean you can make a compelling argument that colonial Great Britain was a democracy, an aristocracy, a plutocracy, and a monarchy simultaneously. Typologies are real stupid like that.

The Rough Riders were a thing during the Spanish-American war. Within a couple of decades of WWI, so kinda close.

@svablicate: Also Poland was directly awarded the easternmost chunk of Germany and the USSR was given the Kaliningrad Oblast, so WWII did have the direct land transfer just not quite in the way described.

Someone really needs to show Dan (and Alex, for that matter) a set of maps showing European borders in, say, 1905, 1925, and 1945.

Quite a lot more happened at the end of WWII than just "hey, we beat Hitler, war's over now!".

Also, I echo the sentiment mentioned previously about wanting to see Dan try to wrap his head around CKII.

see folks, when you go to school in certain states the textbooks say things like

* dropping nukes on japan was necessary

* "greed is good"

* civil war about economy, not slavery

* WW2 was about the USA beating hitler in an epic battle of evil vs good

Pretty silly to have the first American city be Washington. It's not even close to the first American city, it wasn't even our first capital city.

I think you call Animal Control...

As someone who has had a turkey emerge, like a horrific, barely flight-able demon, from a hedge as my dog sniffed about, wild turkeys actually can be pretty freaky.

I'm glad Dan got to see some combat at the end, since that seems like what he's interested in! I'd kill to see a multiplayer stream of this, but I'd kill to see a stream of a lot of things.

I'm with Dan on the disaster intensity, crank that right up!

Interesting to hear @alex talk about anxiety games. Civ V definitely was one for a while with me, but my main one was Skyrim, specifically messing around with Skyrim mods.

Did Alex really imply that civ maps are hand-built by Firaxis? He definitely said "maybe there's some procedural generation in there" or something to that effect, but there's no way Alex could play as much civ as he has and not realize all the maps are different lol.

@jondo there are a lot of issues with the American perspective on 20th century history, but I would suggest that framing it as so laughably, clearly wrong as you did is simply another form of bias. Few Americans think "greed is good", they merely think the benefits of capitalism outweigh the negatives. And anybody claiming that dropping the nukes on Japan is cut-and-dry moral choice, in either direction, is just living in a bubble. I'm just happy that I wasn't the one who had to make that call.

@lemmox: alex is wrong about a lot things about civ in this video. honestly shocked given how much he's played these games. Also he clicks the move button the ui to move his units EVERY TIME, madness. At least they know that 4x means now.

Love this!!! Have always been curious about Civ, but found it a smidge intimidating. I’d kill for a series where it’s essentially a quicklook, only for long established series that most gamer may have overlooked/forgotten about. This game would be perfect!

Awesome playdate. I also enjoy 'I don't know anything about anything so please teach me about it'-Dan much more than 'I don't know anything about anything, and it's all stupid stuff for nerds so don't even try to teach me!'-Dan.

I would love to see more of this game, or just videos in general in which Dan (or someone else) makes a genuine effort to learn stuff about games (or history, or any other topic) they don't know a lot about.
