Quick Look: Sniper Elite 5

Hey apologies if there's any graphical oddities here; as we mentioned about halfway through we were recording it in a bit of an odd way since it didn't record well on my single PC. Need to set up an external recording box!

Seems like a missed opportunity to not get Dan on this. Wasn't Sniper Elite 3 his first ever Quick Look?

This might be a ridiculous complaint but I find the maps in this game kinda TOO big. This Spy Academy initially showed off by Rorie at the beginning of the Quick Look is a gigantic map. Tons of interiors, side alleyways etc and it can take over 2 hours to get through. Also if you want to play like a "silent" sniper it's pretty tough. Guards are relatively dumb but have very keen hearing. Even pistols with silencers can be heard by nearby guards if they are close enough. So sniping can only be safely done if there is "sound masking" going on which isn't always an option.

It's dumb fun but after about 5 missions I was all snipered out and the skill trees doesn't really offer any exciting new abilities that might make you rethink the way you approach the missions.

@insaneluchadoor: GB always did QL, there just werent any new games for a while. IMO people are really pushing that GB is the new GB after G left but its always been good.

i agree with the size complaint. i also think this game doesn't put enough of an emphasis on sniping, really. it's mostly a stealth game, and not a particularly strong one.

@kcin: I really do think most of the time you are being actively punished for sniping by your position being instantly revealed and half the map converging in your location. If you want to play stealthy that is. Even with a suppressor my sniper was audible enough to alert guards at a very long range.

@humanity: I gave it a try on Game Pass and that was my same reaction. The first map took me over an hour to finish, and by the time I was done I'd already felt like I'd had enough of the game. Especially since I spent a quarter of the time sniping compared to same basic sneak up behind from grass and stealth kill that you can play in a dozen other games. Most of the parts of the map it didn't seem like sniping was even an option.

The few times when I found a good perch and took out a guy from long distance were fun though.

This is a pretty good video game. Def worth a try even if you didn't like the older ones. Highly enjoyed my play though.

Game audio overpowers your guys' voices in some of this, but all-in-all not too bad. Thanks for the Quick Look!

@clapmaster: I thought for sure this would be a Dan QL but (and I say this before watching the video) this is also an extremely Rorie series.

I should keep track of the sale numbers of these games. I can never tell if this series keeps getting more and more popular and more people buy it, or if it might be the case that more & more people have at least one of their games in their possession, and that's generally similar enough to the newest iteration that you don't necessarily have to buy the new one for a different experience.

That said, i can't blame this game too much. Graphically it looks pretty impressive, it runs well, the slowmotion shots are very satisfying and they even innovated on the formula by providing invasions. But yeah, it definitly looks like some of these maps might be a bit too large for their own good sadly.
