Jeff always presents this image of himself as being very much about game preservation, but then acts so snarky and cynical on quick looks like this. It's very off-putting.

Why preserve something, if not to mock it? Is there any other reason to keep something around?

Originally, Grimace was the "Evil Grimace", with two pairs of arms with which to steal milkshakes.

I’ve been playing this for about a week, and I think it’s great. The presentation is good and it has lots of extra content about the games in the collection, plus all other pre-NEOGEO SNK games. I never played these in arcades, just the NES version, but all the games have felt fine to me. The rewind feature is great, and I like the feature where you can watch a pro play it and then jump in to play it yourself at any moment. This seems like the best package of retro games that’s ever been made.

I deleted my comments about Jeff, because I’m actually watching this QL now and he doens’t trash on it (at least from what I’ve seen so far). Sorry for jumping the gun, guess I’m just surly today.

Jeff does not trash this game package, and he is not cynical about it, I dont know what the fuck quicklook you guys are watching but its not this one. He says several times that the games have a lot of charm, and he has some good historical info on the titles. He certainly makes a few jokes here and there, but you know.... thats this website. Also the psycho soldier song rips.

Ben was really getting on my nerves here. He should not be involved in old game discussions, they're clearly not for him. Jeff and Brad would have made for a better QL. I miss Ryan at times like this too, feel like he would have loved this collection.

Man, I wish SNK would remake Athena into something good. I really like the idea of arcade action with gearing up on the go, and the character designs are pretty dang charming.

@vampire_chibi: there are 11 more games coming for free on December 11th. 24 games, less than 2 bucks each. I do agree that this collection sure isn't for everyone, but I think it's a reasonable price. I have a lot of nostalgia for a number of the games included.

This collection looks like a really well done version of these back catalogue ports to modern consoles. I really like the menu options etc in this one. (If I had an interest in SNK games I would buy)

I love collections that have multiple versions of each game like this. This seems great.

(also, y'alls forget who Jeff is? Dude's whole thing is "grumpy video game curmudgeon who actually adores the medium")

@shagge: yeah, multiple versions are great. Objectively games like POW and Ikari Warriors were much better in the arcade, but I played the hell out of both of them on the NES, so the noatalgia is there and it's nice to have the choice.

I thought Jeff and Ben did a good presentation of this.

That and the subject matter held my attention for the whole QL.

Looking back 40 years is always going to draw sincere nostalgia, and some otherwise observations.

@benpack: maybe I misread it, it just seemed like you weren't into any of the games besides the Physcho Soldier song. Again, if I misread it, I apologize, just the impression I got. I have a lot of nostalgia for a lot of these games, and I've seen a lot of negativity for the games in this collection on other sites. Guess I'm a bit touchy!

Right? Are people just hung over from too much turkey, or...?

Thanks for this QL, I hope you both will check out the games they add, I would like to see them.

The ability to not only watch a play through, but also jump in at any point is the coolest fucking thing and all non-competitive video games should have that feature.

I'm glad the video ended as it did. I'm really digging this collection and game quality aside (probably 60/40 for stuff I enjoy playing) it's the best bit of archival software I've ever seen. It's super cool.

But man. It sure does crash a bunch. Like... A whole bunch. They went longer in the quick look without crashing then I've made it which is kind of a huge bummer that I can only hope will be addressed.

Otherwise it's really fun. Even terrible ports like Ikari on NES is a fun thing to include.

Or Athena. I super hate Athena. Still own a cart of it. Fuck Athena. I'm super glad both versions are here in a purely historical, and only slightly Stockholmey, kind of way.

Great work by the devs. Just stop it from crashing constantly.

Guerrilla War!

My brother and I played so much of that dumb game on the NES. I have a real soft spot for it. I had no idea that Ikari Warriors is practically the same game until I saw a video of it on Giant Bomb.

No worries, just wanted to see if there was anything that stuck out as being overly negative, since I think this is a really well done presentation of these games for people who may be nostalgic for it. Cheers!

I had such a great time playing Iron Tank in Nintendo as a child. I'm pretty sure TNKIII is the arcade version of Iron Tank. And I thought P.O.W in the arcades was awesome, and I even liked the NES port of the game. Crystalis was also very fun, but doesn't seem to hold up. Guerilla War on NES was EPIC. Man the memories.

So, I'm now in my early 30's and I'll use this space to admit that I have probably, aside from fighting games, never really enjoyed 2D games, side scrollers or otherwise. That said this seems like something I might get in another attempt to start at the start of games and try to build an appreciation I never had. I realize just how many decades and decades of games I'm missing out on because of a genrational-late-to-game bias as the PSX was my first system, and arcades were moving into 3D at that point. For this mix of context, I think that games in 2D while arguably probably the golden age of video game history- to me, the linearity to direction and time on a flat plane felt restrictive, old, or less than compelling; I would love to be able to appreciate all of what I'm surely missing out on.

That rewind feature is something I think would probably help someone like me who isn't going in to necessarily play for challenge; more to see these games and understand them and then play for realsies if I find any of them click for me. The collection or a bunch of these means higher chances I'll find one, right? Here's hoping. Looks cool esp. for people who like this stuff already.

Jeff missed that Ikari 3 is actually a 4 button game. You can also kick and jump in it.

Also, if I remember right, the home version of KoF95 on the original Playstation plays the Psycho Soldier vocal track when you fight them, and if you beat the game with them it replaces the ending credits music with a total banger from Athena: https://youtu.be/3AClWtANdSI
