Am I the only one who instantly got the lyrics "solseraph, seraph, whatever will be, will be" in their head upon seeing the title?

I'm glad someone thought enough of ActRaiser to make a game in its mold, but the visual style seems a liittle sterile to me. It makes me appreciate how Bloodstained created a 3D look that seemed more "drawn" and not as aggressively polygonal.

As a huge fan of the first ActRaiser, this seems perfectly OK. I can see tower defense being one possible way to expand on the town building segments, although it's probably not my first choice. But I'm not a game designer; I'm sure they looked at a few possible ways to approach them.

Game: "Hey, build a well to make fertile land."

Game: *puts a message in the UI that says to build a well to make fertile land*

Brad: *five minutes later, looks at his building list* "Oh look, you can build a well!"

Love ya, Shoemaker.

Woot, Quick Look! Thanks guys! And yeah, the art style is so, soooo bad. Even the overdone pixel art style would be better than that =/

I kinda wish the 2d side scroller portion of the game was 2d... 2.5d stuff like this looks kinda cheap and crumby to me. I love sprites and pixels! Also, Ben expressed something I also felt while playing Bloodstained; these games aren't on the same level as Dead Cells when it comes to controls. And after playing a lotta Dead Cells, I sure wish they were.

Gotta love the amount of research Brad puts into these quick looks beforehand. I get it though I guess, there are a lot of games out there. Bless this mess, love yall.

boy what a reductive QL. everything is described in relation to act raiser which, if you haven’t played it, means this quick look is fucking useless

(Demon's Crest got robbed by ActRaiser as the game of that time that people remember from that era. All because of the Satanist craze of the time...parents bought the one with the angel. Which was never a particularly good 2d side scroller. )

Maybe those weirdo Chileans bringing back ActRaiser only to make it less weird is the ultimate wierd move?

ActRaiser is a hell of a game. I know some swear by the sequel. I wonder if it'd be good these days, going in with an open-mind and knowing what to expect.

As someone who doesn't know anything about ActRaiser, this quick look didn't make much sense and wasn't very useful.

At least I got to see the game in action, can't say that I'm super impressed with the animations. I'll likely pick it up in a future Steam sale.

I loaded up the sequel last year. It's very difficult. I can't even get past the first boss. They definitely give you a lot more moves compared to the first one.

So... What, if any, original concepts are this team bringing with this game? Because all I'm seeing is straight up biting of Quintet. Like, all of the effort was done by somebody else almost 30 years ago. I'd rather just play some Quintet games again. Or Dark Cloud. This looks like a phone game. I'll pass. Seriously not cool with how flippant modern developers treat old games, as if they can just lift entire chunks of it and call it an homage and it's all cool. Ugh.

Also, never excited when a key selling point is "oh hey, the composer for the game we ripped off did a song for this, so you know it's legit".

@steevl: But just think how many more moves they could have included if it was on the Dreamcast!!

This streamer PJ always runs it at GDQ and he makes it look so much fun and claims it's one of his favorite games of all-time. It always makes me want to revisit.

The game's development was sad as it was gutted and forced to be more action focused by a publisher. It was the beginning of the end for Quintet leading to one last hurrah in Terranigma (would love to see the GB crew playthrough that one -- I'd argue it's the greatest game never released in the West).

This QL was really confusing. I had no idea what game they were referring to.
Having Ben guess potential mechanics might be a fun in-house sport but it does not inform the viewer.

Hopefully Nintendo starts putting up SNES games on their online service sooner than later, I'd love to play ActRaiser.

Music sounds really boring so far. I wish they would have just gotten the main guy to do the entire soundtrack. The Act Raiser soundtrack is incredible.

It looks kinda like the side scrolling sections are using the system they developed for Abyss Odyssey.

Ummm cool quick look... If you know what Act Raiser is. I do not and this definitely didn't help.

I can see the argument for using that comparison when it's a popular game, but I don't think I've ever heard of Act Raiser and I'm guessing I'm not in the minority.

@lonelyspacepanda: PJ played it today and thought it was trash, quit and continued his play of Nuts N' Bolts instead.

They showed exactly how the game works... and the reason they keep comparing it to Actraiser is because it’s the MOST relevant thing about this game. And also y’all never missed took tips before? Plus they’re multi tasking and trying to entertain and explain

As someone who only played Actraiser 2 (which had no RTS elements), this looks fascinating.

The movement reminds me a lot of Abyss Odyssey. That game was cool but the actual movement was very cumbersome and sometimes difficult to manage. It was fine enough in a loos Smash Bros.-esque action game, but a homage to a 2D action sidescroller should be much tighter than that.

I can't not hear "ActRaiser" as spoken by Phil Moore. Before making a kid play ActRaiser for points. As God intended.

Actraiser is a classic, if you don't know what it is, that's on you. Go check it out. I like the idea of adding in tower defense into the mix, looks cool.

saying how wild it is that the zeno clash folk made an actraiser game would've made sense in 2010, but by now it should be understood that Ace Team is a very versatile developer that always tries something new. They combined Monty Python with Monkey Ball & RTS. They made a 2d roguelike with Smash Bros combat. They made an action RPG with stop motion animations. Not always the most polished games, but you always get a quality product for a fair price.
