Splatoon lore enjoyer here. Splatoon takes place on post apocalyptic earth after humans destroyed the climate and flooded everything. The only mammals left alive are the two cats who judge the battles because of a time capsule and cloning. I haven't finished Splatoon 3's story mode but unfortunately saw some spoilers. Splatoon 3 's story goes into the finals years of humanity and it sure didn't seem pleasant for them.
