As much as these two games could use...well full-on remakes (some of the mods are neat tho), they're still a lot of fun. I hope you guys can get a sense of that early enough on to see it through to the end. also:

A bit hard to hear vinny when things are exploding

Not sure if it gets better later in the episode, but the audio balance could definitely use some work. Game volume's just drowning out both Alex and Vinny at times.

Technical nitpicking aside, this should be a fun watch! Don't think I've ever seen much gameplay of either KOTOR, only ever played TOR Online during it's launch year.

This game and its sequel (primarily its sequel, which I finished first) are what got me into RPGs.

Me thinking I played this game when I was like 10 and then realizing it didn’t come out until I was 16 is some pretty unfair existential dread to be getting from this video.

Never finished it though. I got to the very last sequence and got stuck on some enemies that I was either under leveled for or just too impatient to figure out how to fight. I saw the big story reveal at that point, so I guess I just didn’t need to see it through? If the save weren’t long lost, I’d have certainly gone back and finished it at some point in the last 17 years.

I’m extremely interested in KOTOR2. It seems divisive, which generally means it is at least going for it. I think I only rented it, never getting past the first planet. Barely remember anything about it. I think I own it on steam, but just don’t know if I have it in me to play through it myself.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure High Republic ≠ Old Republic. I think this is still like 600-800 years before the High Republic era

Just been thinking about getting back into this game again myself. Was a blast when it first came out to play it and experience the story

@vinny You mentioned you didnt use mods, but if you looked into some mods could you post them?

I legitimately want a reason from EA (or Disney, whoever's stopping it) as to why they haven't done PS4/XB1 remasters of the KOTOR games. It's like the easiest money they could make. If Lucasfilm is like "these games aren't canon" or whatever, fine! Name it like "Star Wars Legends: KOTOR" or whatever. This is like the dumbest part of the EA deal.

(I know they released both games on mobile, but it's not really the same)

Honestly at this point I want Alex to play all the great BioWare games. Jade Empire should be next.

@hatking: KOTOR 2 deals with some The Last Jedi themes in that one character kind of calls out the horseshit and hypcoracy of the Jedi and the Sith teachings. It's worth playing, even if all the content isn't there leaving it kind of a mess (less so if you get the restore content mod. helps round a lot of the rougher edges of the game's story).

This game was one of my intros into more western RPGs, it has a really special place in my memories. That being said I tried to play the steam release a couple of years ago and was surprised how badly it held up. Not awful, but a lot of running around empty spaces and looting foot lockers. That and it always felt like it took a while to get started. Just like with mass alex I'm sure I will appreciate being able to watch someone else go through it again, though.

I really hope this becomes a full series, and hopefully you guys do a sequel series with Kotor2. With the restored content modded back in, I think that may be my favorite game.

Alex and I were getting different results running the fullscreen mods and interface updates on our computers.

Never played this game but I always heard that it was really well written, as in significantly better than modern RPG writing. Maybe it's just the start but so far it seems stiff as hell and very videogamey. Like ships exploding and generic soldier man is here to say "ah yes, I see you are *audible recording take change* a scoundrel, let me explain what a scoundrel is for 30 seconds, now why not use your hacking skill on this door"

Does the writing get better or is it just a case of grey-beards exaggerating how good the writing is.

Oh, yeah, I hope so. At this point playing Kotor 2 on PC without TSLRCM doesn't make much sense.

@vinny Gameplay audio is a bit hot on this one, can we turn it down a bit for the next episode?

@sakuno: I think the characters in the beginning are unanimously the worst. Bastilla and Carth (Kaiden) suck in every way, the whole way through (MY OPINION, of course!). The other characters are fun and less one-dimensional than some Mass Effect characters IMO. But as for the writing and pacing, yeah it's definitely of its time, and they were trying a more accessible kind of CRPG for the first time. I'm sure they shoehorned in some of that tutorializing so they wouldn't scare off the more mainstream audience that the Star Wars name brings.

But I liked all the other characters other than those 2 first ones, much more so than most ME companions. I played this game after ME, so I'm not one of the grey beards.

God this game rules.

This is the best present one could ever ask for.

Around 20:30 when this guy says "May Lay Weapon" is driving me insane.

Looks like the compressor was set but not ticked on for the gameplay. I made it a bit more aggressive as well and boosted myself. Hope it fixes the issues.

Actually, looks like Media Encoder is ignoring my entire sound mix and just outputting the raw audio... Looking into it.

I love these long form playthroughs and couldn't be more happy to see them tackle this game. While Andromeda would have been sort of funny for a few episodes it is ultimately a very boring game so I'm so happy they chose this.

@vinny I actually worked on adding widescreen support to Kotor ages and ages ago.

This modifies the hardcoded list of supported resolutions in the executable using a hex edit, hence you can't use the Steam executable, which is encrypted (but you can just download an old no-cd executable and then use that with the Steam content files). The updated huds are simple file overrides via the game's built-in method for supporting mods.

New tools have come along since then using code injection and other methods to make things easier on the user, but I'm willing to bet they're a little bit more "sensitive" to system changes than this old method.
