This was a pleasant surprise! I definitely liked that there were some card close ups as they were being played. Well done Jan & Ben!

This is awesome! I would love more card/board game quick looks, especially knowing Vinny plays a lot of board games.

Giant Bomb is a website about video games :)

Good QL, I like card games quite a bit, and I like fighting games, and I never would have looked at this otherwise despite that mutual love.

I've spent a large portion of my life playing magic tournaments especially sealed deck and draft, but it's been a few years since I've even left my house to make friends and feel like I'm too old to go to comic shops and make magic friends. It sucks when you're not able to do your favorite hobbies anymore. I've been playing magic since 7th grade and have tried other crpg games and nothing comes close to the art, feel, look, errata, and lore of cards.

Does anyone at giant bomb play magic? I've never heard anyone except Austin mention it.

Just here to add my voice to the choir asking for more tabletop quick looks. I just played Clank at PAX, and that would be a good one. Plus some modern favorites like Dice Throne, Dead of Winter, and oh my god, you guys totally opened Pandora's Box.

I would really know what Ben (or any other duders here who may have played both) thinks of this game compared to Yomi. I've been looking at Yomi for years and never pulled the trigger, but it seems super fun. It seems more like it's based more on Rock, Paper, Scissors type mind games, but this seems more like playing an actual fighting game. I might have to check this out!

@the_hot_giant_dolphin: i think you nailed it. this game feels more like the actual flow of a fighting game - part of it is knowing when to back up and build meter, etc, where yomi is pure “ive got your number i know you’re gonna throw scissors”

I bought into another board game fighting game system called Way of the Fighter that has way more detail and parts moving in it. But it also relies on dice so the swings are much more random.

Not sure if anyone here ever played the UFS ccg but at one point I was heavy into it. There was Penny Arcade, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, etc in the system. I got really hard (har har) into the SF side and ended up spending like $150, total, on building a Guile deck with several awesome foils and promos. I loved it for about 4 months. Then I never played the game again!

Oh yeah, CCGs are SCAMS and the original (even worse) microtransaction.

@the_hot_giant_dolphin: i think yomi has a lower barrier to entry and playtime which is handier for showing it off to people, but this one really captured the “fighting game but in cards” feel which is what some people want. i will say there’s an online version of Yomi if you wanted to try befor you buy.

It feels like Guard and Armor are backwards in this system. Shouldn't Armor prevent your attack from getting interrupted, and Guard prevent damage??

@benpack: Did you ever play Flash Duel? I like Yomi as a hand management game, but for showing people a tabletop game that looks like a fighter with low barrier to entry, Flash Duel is pretty hard to beat, in terms of rules and $.

@the_hot_giant_dolphin: you can play the Exeed system for free on tabletopia, or go to the publisher's website and download a Print'n'Play version, you just wont get the Street Fighter decks.

@benpack:Have you tried this designer's earlier game BattleCON? i'm wondering how the Exeed system compares to the BattleCON system.

[edit] ...also, i too, would like to see more card/board game stuff on Giant Bomb.

@sammo21: I used to manage a local comic and games store, UFS was sort of what kept our doors open. We even held a regional tournament attended by the then owners of the brand (Sabertooth Games). I still have uncut foil sheets of cards and complete sets and boxes upon boxes of extra cards. When we closed our shop there was no market locally for the cards and I just kept them rather than trying to go to ebay or something.

I was never any good at building Magic decks but I was nearly unbeatable in UFS (in our group anyway, I'm sure there were way better players out there). I often threw games to keep my players excitement up. Eventually I switched my deck building style to go for gimmicks that would only fire maybe 10% of the time if I was lucky but when it did it would be ridiculous and stupid in the best ways.

I'm so glad someone else remembers it, I haven't played it in more than 10 years now (wow, I can't believe we closed the store that long ago) but I still think about it often.

Also I will now have to get this, since it looks pretty damn fun.
