@benpack@janman This quick look was a lot of fun. I don't know fighting games but I love card games so it was interesting to see fighting game mechanics translated into card games. I would love more card game and table-top quick looks but I understand that they are a lot of work.

A great series idea would be checking out card games based on video games: Pokémon TCG is the biggest but I also really like the Final Fantasy TCG.

Why is this not Giant Bomb Unplugged >:

Fun look, though. I can get behind this branching out.

Giant Bomb Unplugged is a great name! with this and Vinny's Scythe QL I hope we get more tabletop game features.

Exceed is a great implementation of the flow and mechanics of a Fighting video game. I personally like BattleCON but its much harder to get into and master, but you get the essence of a Fighting game in return. Think: Mind games, no hidden info, each caracter is unique (more so than Exceed) and have wildly variable styles of play.

BattleCON Online is free to play on steam if anyone is interested (future QL?), but you can't beat the phisicality of the card game.

Yomi also has a game on steam but I have not played it.

@somethingclever: Nice! Yeah, I wish our community was better but everyone played MTG, Yu Gi Oh, or Pokemon. I kept up with it until everyone died. I loved those cards but that sat in a binder and card box for ages. I ended up giving them to this kid who was a huge Street Fighter collector when I worked at Gamestop.

Sounds you did a great job trying to keep the community alive! I wish more people did that.

This isn’t my kind of game but I just want to say y’all did a great job with this quick look. It’s good to see you all trying new things and taking the time to edit in the card closeups was a nice touch!

Ben cheated! In the second to last strike of the first game he resolved his strike against Jan's block and after Jan put the block on his gauge Ben said "in that case, I'll prepare" and drew two cards. He skipped Jan's turn and took a two card advantage! Shame!

Also jumping on the “please do more tabletop games” train. This is great.

Growing up my whole family, grandparents on down, were card and board game fanatics. Every get-together was spent at the kitchen table, sometimes multiple games going across multiple tables, often over a glass of wine. Being by far the youngest child, most of my family has passed on, so I don't really ever play card and board games anymore, but I would love to see more table top stuff on this site - both here and over at Beast. Brings back a lot of good memories.

@sin4profit: Yes! BattleCON is amazing. Steam version is free-to-play and not bad, if you wanna try the mechanics out, but the physical version has way more characters.

@afar: GB Unplugged is a series they had done in the past - they did a few sessions of a D&D game, and I think a few rounds of Avalon too? But that was in previous space and with previous mix of people, so it's been long MIA.

@the_hot_giant_dolphin: Yomi is strange, compared to this game it's like if every single turn was treated as a strike (so there's no real alternating turns, anything you want to do starts with playing a facedown card at the same time as your opponent). Has same concepts of speed, HP, character abilities, and even the character deck balance breakdown ("X deck is 20% throws and 40% normals, etc.") but no sense of spacing - no board. What Yomi really goes into deeply compared to Exceed is a sort of combo system: There's normals and specials, and some specials can have follow ups while others are specifically the last card you can play in a hit. Also each deck is also a bicycle deck (4 suits, 10 numbered, 3 faces, 2 jokers), so in general normals can combo if they are numerically in order. It's pretty fun, but it's very much about that one moment of guessing at your opponent, and the rest is just seeing what the best hit you can make with your in hand cards are.

When I first saw this game on a con floor from about 12 feet away I was able to get "oh, that's UFS but with some of the combat mechanics stripped out and replaced with Flash Duel," and I think this QL kind of validates that to anyone who knows both those games. That's not a bad thing, because I think UFS had some design flaws that didn't break it but kind of stifled the fun you would expect of a series-crossover-fight-game-turn-card-game promise, and Flash Duel is a more fun and really approachable game that could offer a lot by adding some more mechanical depth. It's just that if you know these 3 other game, this comes off as oddly redundant. But I as a fan of games that try to port fighting games to tabletop, I don't think I would mind putting this on my shelf right next to the other three already there.

It looks like seasons 1 and 2 of Exceed are on Tabletop Sim (SF is season 3) so I'm definitely going to give it a serious try. But until it can offer me the Terry V. Haohmaru matchup that originally sold me on UFS, it's definitely just another attempt and not the next evolution.

Good layout, Jan! The set itself is a bit dark but you really improved the look by showing the enlarged cards.

I enjoyed this, thank you! I'd definitely watch more card/tabletop game videos.

It was probably a lot of extra work putting the card graphics up, but it was GREAT. It really helped me see what was going on.

This was a cool quick look, I like the presentation, similar to other videos I’ve watched for learning board games. If y’all like this game, it has a lot in common with a game called Puzzle Strike.

It’s basically Puzzle Fighter, but legally dissimilar :p The main mechanic is sending trash back and forth and trying to overwhelm the opponent, so it has a similar flow to this. There are lots of characters with different play styles too. One main difference is Puzzle Strike is more of a deck builder, where you purchase abilities during the game, versus this game where the deck is fixed.
