@jasonr86: agreed. I wish they pumped more effort into this collection but I never had a chance to play Sunshine and Galaxy so I’m enjoying this. It isn’t perfect but what is?

Mario Sunshine is flawed, but great. I know it's not for everyone. but I feel that it's unfairly judged sometimes. Once you get a handle on the mechanics that games just moves like no other mario game.

I dunno man. I'm really into the idea that Mario 64 looks like Mario 64. Simply smoothing out the edges of those polygons and increasing the resolution on the hud elements and text has done wonders for the presentation. I think that it looks great. As far as how it plays, well, lets just say that the Burgle episode that has Mario 64 in it was the first time that I had seen the game in nearly 20 years, and those levels sure did seem tiny and empty. I guess that I really don't see much value in someone coming to Mario 64 for the first time in the year 2020. Not that the game is bad, but it sure as hell is a product of its time and its own legacy.

Aside from the lack of inverted controls (it's Nintendo's goddamned fault that I have to play games with an inverted y-axis in the first place), I see no issues with this package. It probably helps that I take it for what it is instead of what it could/should be.

The question to ask for this collection is:

Would you pay $20 for Mario 64? $20 for Sunshine? $20 for Galaxy?

@numbn8: I mean it would probably just have been the GB crew shitting on Dan’s positivity as much as they can. Dan does have hours of play through of this collection on his twitch and YouTube channels that he put up this past week, it’s a fun watch worth checking out.

This collection is such a gross cash grab from Nintendo. Hard pass.

I cannot believe Brad was missing the most obvious gameplay hints in Sunshine.

While I agree that this package sucks, can we stop acting like Sunshine is a criminal offense? That's a 3/5 star game at worst.

Having finished the video, they didn't even cover the whole game. What happened to Quick Looks giving a taste of every part of the game? Show me the music player, dang it!

There is no consensus that Galaxy 2 is better than Galaxy. Galaxy 2 is largely a mission pack expansion to Galaxy. One point in favor of Galaxy 2 is that it does have Grandmaster Galaxy and the Perfect Run.

The thing Jeff/Brad said about Mario deserving better reminded me that this isn't just a Switch port, it's supposed to be an anniversary celebration. This is what they did to honor Mario and these games.

Was ben making a joke when he said the 3 most important mario games? Or do people think these games are actually comsidered good and better than super mario world, mario 1, and mario 3 which are the 3 mario games I think of? Not super mario sunshine one of the worst marios from watching dan and co play it here.

He said arguably three of the most important, which could mean anything. Maybe they're three of the 50 most important Mario games.

Activision is doing full remakes of their games for the same price. The fact that these ports aren’t even up to the standards of fan made emulators is truly fucking embarrassing. They lack control options that emulators have been doing for years. There are plainly visible debug elements in Sunshine that emulators fixed years ago.

I understand that COVID-19 has impacted game developers, but this shouldn’t have been released in a state like this.

Sunshine is a fantastic ass Mario game. Nothing more to it than that. It was worthy and bold follow up to Mario 64. The movement and controls are still the best out of any Mario game.

That aside, this collection truly does suck. Worst and laziest collection i have seen in a long whille. Sucks that fans have already thrown money at this garbage, so i expect more worthless cash grab collections comming our way soon.

They didn't even use the best version of Mario 64. The DS port had unlockable characters and generally way more stuff =_=...

There is plenty of fun to be had in Sunshine (notice I did not say it is perfect and I did not say it is the best Mario game). If you have any interest then watch some of the advanced techniques which make movement fast and fun. Play around with some of those techniques yourself rather than just swallowing all this negativity.

I, too, wish they had added more goodies and upgrades to this. Remember that Rare collection? That was a proper do-up.

I do like Mario Sunshine, though. Enjoyed it then and having fun going back to it now. If you are looking for an opinion from someone who likes the games, head over to Kotaku. They also wish more had been done for this, but do appreciate the games.

Sometimes Jeff just sounds like such a downer. How can you hate a game with controls so sharp that simply running and jumping around is fun in and of itself? Mario Sunshine is probably the weakest of the 3D Marios, but that control scheme is just incredibly satisfying and there are a lot of really unique worlds and challenges. It does suffer from some repetitiveness and collect-a-thon-ishness, and the weird tone of the story and cut-scenes is off-putting, but there is absolutely joy to be had here.

It is a bit disappointing that there were not substantive upgrades here - I would've loved to see a full-on remake of SM64 along the lines of the treatment that Crash or Tony Hawk got recently. SM64 certainly deserved it. But the fact that this is selling gangbusters shows Nintendo knows what it's doing. I love all three of these games so I may pick this up.

I generally dislike the extra padding in these games. Boss battles, collecting stuff, weird minigames. I just want pure platforming challenge and that's all. I wish some indie dev would make a whole game in the style of the backpack-less levels from Sunshine - if they can nail the controls as well as Nintendo.

@wollywoo:I'm playing through Sunshine for the first time right now and having a lot of fun. I had the same thought as you, I'd love to see a Meat Boy style design in 3D, instant restarts and a bunch of those non-fludd stages. The issue is that Nintendo won't do it and nobody else gets the feeling right.

Its so weird to me that most reviews seem unaware that they did actually update the textures and the rendering resolution on mario 64 so saying they did zero work to it is pretty disingenuous IMO

I guess because it's been playable at higher resolutions on emulators for like 20 years.

Man when it came out the only complaints I remember hearing about Sunshine was the camera being wonky on certain occasions. I remember loving that game. To me it was kinda like the Dark Souls of 3d Mario sorta like Lost Levels with the 2d Mario games. I remember there being a whole slew of hard bs but also remember there being parts that are really great.

This package is absolutely not worth $60 for me, but I get that it will be great for lots of folks. I want more out of a package for that price and the convenience just isn't worth it in my case.

I also agree with Jeff on Sunshine, even as a kid I just felt kinda bummed out playing and never finished it as a result. Galaxy and 64 are great.

Yey, Jeff jokingly mentioned Croc as 'important platformer' instead of Glover or Gex. You made it Croc! I'm hoping for a Earthworm Jim 3d or Tonic Trouble call out next :)

And to Ben, there are actually multiple NOLF games out there. NOLF1 is a 9/10, NOLF2 is a 8/10.
