Almost every song in Star Fox 64 is incredible. It's like all John Williams level themes. The Credits sequence theme is particularly epic. Makes it worth playing through to the end every time.

If we get a "Playing a 'Real' Roguelike" feature I strongly recommend Caves of Qud!

A rogue-like that I really like, and that I think was very underrated, is Brut@l.

@brad and @unastrike did a quick look back in 2016, which instantly sold me on it.

I remember being very surprised when the GOTY deliberations came and went without any mention of the game whatsoever. Not even in the Best Style category.

The original is iconic ofc, but Luminist (the dude who did all the analog synth remakes of the Metroid OST) has made my favorite version of the Corneria theme.

Edit: Not sure why the website isn't letting me embed this youtube video. It's claiming it doesn't recognize the service for some reason.

The original Star Fox for the SNES was the best one and it had the best soundtrack. I remember many of the tunes in the game.

Is anyone else having problems playing this video? I can't seem to get it to play despite not having an issue with any other video.

Does the game play like Rogue? Then it's a roguelike. So if it's a run-based platformer, or fps, or deck builder with some randomness it's not a roguelike.

Why doesn't Brad use the infinite 1UP trick somewhere? Nintendo has recently featured it in some of their Mario 35TH videos...maybe they intended players to use it to finish this game...

Spelunky and FTL are absolutely not roguelikes. They're not Like Rogue. I'm not the biggest fan of the Berlin Interpretation, but it has some solid qualifiers that exemplify what a Rogue Like game is.

That said, I typically refer to Nethack as the "new classic" example in the case of roguelikes. Rogue was pretty simplistic in comparison and Nethack really nailed it.

Tales of Maj'eyal is a very interesting take on a roguelike, if you don't like the traditional style of something like Nethack.

also lmao while typing this I watched Brad run along the ceiling and hit a wall above Bowser.

The entire thought of Spelunky was to take a handful of the compelling elements from Roguelikes, which is something of a turn-based RPG subgenre, and create a new type of action game influenced by Super Mario Bros. and such. Spelunky from the beginning also retained the SMB mechanic of being able to run over one block gaps. Roguelites are their own thing, they can be platformers or FPS games, kind of anything that's got proc gen, permadeath, sometimes unlockables all to entice and fuel replayability.

Now that I think of it, it would be cool if someone made a "proper" Roguelike spin-off of Spelunky; Including all of the ideas, items/weapons, characters, locations, etc and use that "world" to make a real-ass modern Roguelike.

I am very taken with the idea of Mario scrabbling around inside the walls of Bowser's castle like a trapped squirrel.

Unreasonably happy to hear Ben mention Superego. As someone who never played a lot of starfox, the corneria music is just Hoyt Runyon’s Van Buren middle school.

The correct definition of "Roguelike" is "Whooooooo Caaaaaares". ;p

Also, best Star Fox is "yippity-yap" Star Fox.

@eloj: "Play and beat SMB1" seems like weird advice considering the physics and rules aren't even the same as the original. The most you'd get out of it is learning the level layout but you can do that in Super Mario 35 by playing Practice. And you have infinite time if you do that.
