not entirely sure if its the same problem I was having with chrome before but to fix it I had to disable this tag in the chrome flags screen. "calculate-native-win-occlusion" to have video play when tabbed into something else.

That was a heck of a run, but you guys eventually managed a stream set-up! Congrats! :D

(for real though, hope the next one doesn't have all the programs conspire against you)

Zelda 2 is neat but like a lot of more "complex" NES games, it is held back by its hardware and design decisions (and I suppose poor translations) of the day. If they had made it as a mid generation SNES instead of mid-gen NES game, I'm sure I would like a lot. If you were there at time I'm sure it was exciting, but as someone who played it decades later on emulators it was just kind of frustrating. Shovel Knight kinda did it better.
Only a few games like Mario 3, Metroid, and Zelda 1 work because of how accessible the gameplay is and they're pretty forgiving. The first Legend of Zelda almost feels like an arcade game in its elemental simplicity and initial mechanics. I suppose some of the RPGs are good on the system too but even FF2 is a mess that needed a remake.

also congrats Brad. Hopefully you can move onto one of several games you've had on your back catalogue for years like Mario Galaxy and DMC3. Unless there's some other games you've jokingly teased over the years that you'd rather give a shot.

Zelda 2 is indeed fun. My most recent playthrough i actually found the game pretty fun and playable.. up until the last dungeon. it's like the game takes a 180 and actually becomes bullshit right at the last dungeon? maybe i was missing *something* from the nintendo powers or something but i just couldn't do it. still though, my respect for that game has gone up a lot over recent years.

I'm only a half hour into the video, but you guys should know by now that this is the kind of nonsense that Giant Bomb fans want to see. The fact that you play video games may as well be a coincidence.

Way to go Brad!

Also, you guys should absolutely do a playthrough of Zelda 2. It's the forgotten Zelda in so many ways, and it's awesome.

Anyone interested in the minus world talk a bit past the 1 hour mark and wanting more details should take a look at https://legendsoflocalization.com/super-mario-bros/misc/ which I think includes a summary of the interview Jeff mentioned (or maybe it's a similar-but-different interview).

I think at the time Zelda 2 was new-ish I thought it was bullshit a lot earlier than the last dungeon... Always had trouble against enemies with shields, though these days the tricks to get by them are a lot more well known. Maybe I just needed to get good. The last time I replayed it (a few years ago? what does time even mean anymore) it was a lot more enjoyable, partly because I was better at it, partly because I could remember some of the more obtuse parts of the game. Still had a heck of a bad time going through Death Mountain to get the hammer... wasn't too bad between getting the hammer and the lava rivers leading up to the last dungeon.

Anyone interested in seeing someone break Zelda 2 over their knee and rip apart the fabric of spacetime should check out the 50 minute reverse boss order SGDQ2020 run... or the 5 minute warp glitch TAS.

It sure is annoying when software that silently updates itself changes behavior...

I know I'm in a minority, but I actively dislike facecams. At least for 4:3 games they're not blocking gameplay or making it smaller.

Zelda 2 is ruined by the blocking enemies. There's no pattern, they block faster than you can move the only way to reliably kill them is if you do the obnoxious jump thing. Would have been a good game if not for them.

Regarding the "let's try 9 world with one game" text:

Some Nintendo games used to call lives "games" back then. For example, during Zelda: Link to the Past's credits, you see a summary of "games played", which just means how many times you got a Game Over.

I mostly find it interesting because it's neat seeing what video games called certain things before we settled on a standardized name for them.

Late game Zelda 2 is kind of a mess. Was pretty into it for the first few hours, but the later stuff soured me super hard on the game. It's not a great game, but worth experiencing.

Man, I played most of the way through Zelda 2 when it came to the switch online service and hated every second of it. It just goes to show that there is a game for every single person in the world, no matter how perverted they are.

Go to 56:10 and jack the playback speed all the way down.

Love Zelda 2! Love the blocking mechanics and the physics of movement from hitting shields, or getting hit on your own shield when fighting Iron Knuckles and bouncing off of enemies with the downward stab. Nothing feels quite like it on the NES.

There is a bunch of BS though too, but it's all "things you have to know" which makes it a non-issue one you know it. With some chat help Brad could probably get through it. I was really hoping that, that's where they would be going next post Mario 2.

I'm with Jeff 100 percent on Zelda II. The game was a masterpiece that introduced so many innovated concepts that it's now standard in open world action-rpgs and action games in general. All those people bashing the game back during my youth didn't understand how ahead of it's time the game was. The same with Castlevania: Simon's Quest. The thing is, people don't like change, especially when it's good for them.
