Topics for this week's after show include Direct X12, hard games, and good times all around.

If you think the GIant Bombcast spends too much time talking about Not Video Games, you're going to hate this thing.

God, on play room I saw an obese woman and a guy chatting with chat normally until they got up and started grinding on each other. The dude pulled the woman’s underwear down and chat saw all of it. All of it.

It took me a minute to realize Jeff wasn't talking about Rage Racing.

@jeff I was wondering about DX12 myself a while ago and learned that it was mostly not worth it for developers to take advantage of DX12.

Nvidia's DX11 drivers enabled multi-threading, which spreads the workload of a game over multiple CPU cores. AMD's DX11 drivers don't have this feature. DX12 offers a method of compensating weak single-threaded performance, by spreading the workload over multiple cores. This means that it had huge gains for AMD CPU's that didn't have access to multi-threading yet. Nvidia was already able to spread the workload through DX11 and therefore didn't see huge performance gains with DX12. Also note that most modern PC's are not bottlenecked by the CPU, but the GPU. So being able to spread the workload over multiple CPU cores is not as important for a beefy PC ,compared to a budget system where the less powerful CPU might be running at 90% while playing games. This also explains why a RTS game like Ashes of the Singularity, with it's large amount of moving parts, was the posterboy for DX12. Such a game is all about CPU performance.

Another big feature of DX12 was the ability to use multiple GPU's from different manufacturers together. However, while AMD & Nvidia brough Crossfire & SLI technology to use 2 GPU's together for DX11, with DX12 all that work has to be done by the developers themselves.

So while DX12 is definitly a plus for AMD users, the benefits don't merit the costs to implement DX12 in most games at this point.

Seeing LEGO Rock Raiders as a linked game gave me a fierce rush of nostalgia that I was not prepared for.

I must still have that disk around somewhere. I need to find it now.

@onemanarmyy:

I was under the impression that DX12 is tied to Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps and everything on Steam is DX11. Maybe I understood this wrong (really not sure).

But if I'm right, that would definitely explain why DX12 isn't really gaining momentum. You sell more games on PS4 and Steam than on Xbox One and can't use the shortcuts or advantages there anyway.

Edit: I just saw that Rise of the Tomb Raider got DX12 support added later on, so it's possible. But you do need Windows 10, which might be the bigger reason here, why it's not mire widely adopted by now.

@tylerdurden4321: From what i gather, DX12 is limited to Windows 10 & Xbox One. Not necessarily limited to UWP. If you look at the list of DX12 enabled games, a good chunk of them are available on Steam as well. DX12 games

But yeah, you're right. If you can make a neat multiplatform game and serve Playstation users & Windows 7 folk as well, that's one more reason to use DX11 instead of DX12.
