Film & 40s: The Exorcist

The power of Christ compels us to watch William Friedkin's 1973 horror classic! Presumably the power of Satan compelled us to do it while drinking.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Oct. 25 2019

Posted by: Alex

In This Episode:

Max von Sydow

Pazuzu

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film The Exorcist. We are watching Director's Cut of the film via a US Blu-ray release. It is the 2 hour and 12 minute version of the movie. As of the time of this posting, the Director's Cut is available for digital rental on multiple sites, but JustWatch and other streaming listing sites seemingly don't differentiate between the different versions and list the original version by default. Just be careful when you're picking your rental option.

Our commentary begins at the film's 10 second mark, right as the Warner Bros. logo first fades up.

Awesome. I hoped they would pick this film, such a classic. I will have to watch the movies with this on, I'm pretty such I can get a 'directors cut' copy at the library.

@madlaughter: I tend to usually just rent on Amazon. Maybe like $4 that’s what I ended up doing for event horizon

@madlaughter: Got it on YouTube for 3.99.

Sad it's not Hausu but I'm still gonna order a boatload of Domino's and enjoy this!

Nope, can't do it.

The Exorcist always scared the shit out of me, but it's the fact that I can't sleep for weeks afterwards that makes me feel like I just can't revisit this. Or really any exorcism movie.

Last one I saw was The Exorcism of Emily Rose and that fucked me up for awhile, too.

So I listened to this as a podcast, and "Eat shit, Pazuzu" would be Abby's iconic catchphrase if she was to perform an exorcism.

I am genuinely curious to see what the commentary will be like.

This is the first real masterpiece of cinema these guys have tackled.

The JustWatch links are only for the theatrical version. Gonna have to do a little more digging to find a stream/rental for the directors cut.

Swell movie, can't say I got spooked by any of it, but the atmosphere is still great. The discussion sure went places this time, good laughs from the Rocky nonsense.

I'm very stoked for Gremlins 2 next week! The Fly would've been a great, gross flick to hear them react to as well, but Gremlins 2 should be a riot.

I saw this at the theater back in the year 2001ish? when i was just 13 years old. After we got out of the theater, me and my friend, were too scared to walk back a few blocks to our neighborhood in the middle of the night. I also couldn't sleep for like a week. Thanks to that lady who did not even hesitate to sell two tickets to two teenagers for the scariest movie of all time.

Edit: Oh noo Mahardy I know what you've been through.

I enjoy this but the stories and tangents are getting a little out of hand at this point. I would like them to actually comment on the things that happen in the movie. It felt like the actual commentary of this movie was mostly limited to sounds of disgust when something gross happened. Which was warranted, but a little thin.

I have the same complaint with some of the video game features when they start to almost completely ignore the game in front of them.

I enjoy the bomb- and beastcast, but not everything has to be a podcast. Things can be about the thing they are about.

Fear is a weird thing. Unlike apparently a lot of people, The Exorcist never really scared me too much, but at the same time I was too scared to watch Event Horizon until last week (which turned out to be pretty tame) and when I was a child Gremlins haunted my dreams for years. I was also messed up for a long time as a small child from watching approximately 5 minutes of The Fly, so I'm glad we aren't getting that.

I figured the JustWatch link they posted would have the version we needed... I just spent $4 on the wrong version of the movie. I guess I should have read it closer. Fantastic.

Nah the tangents in this one were all good and fine. In this movie especially there are a LOT of moments that don't really have a lot going on to comment on, and they did a good job filling in with nice goofy/interesting extra commentary.

Amazon has the extended cut it's the one that says "The Version you've never seen" in a red stripe at the top of the box. Also yes they don't talk enough about the thing they are their for but I don't know why i am suprised i've watched enough of these to know it always spirals off into madness. So don't watch if like me people not paying attention to movies is a pet peeve of yours it will drive you batty.

@cyborgx7: Film & 40s don't go well at all with slower and dialogue-heavy movies since this is basically 4 people getting drunk and shooting the shit. Naturally it will be a lot of talking over what's happening.

It works perfectly for more mindless action movies or bad b grade movies. But since this is neither the commentary is lacking a lot.

Still, I enjoyed this for what it was.

@ybbaaabby just a heads up that in the US distributors are legally required to refrigerate eggs because in the states the eggs are washed which increases the likelihood that salmonella will spread. In the EU and other places they don't have to refrigerate eggs because they don't wash them, and there is a natural membrane that prevents the spreading of salmonella.

Fun fact: Max von Sydow was in his mid-40’s when they filmed the movie. They aged him up via makeup prosthetics.

Other less fun fact: They name dropped Pazuzu in Exorcist 2, the bad exorcist sequel. (Exorcist 3 is pretty good though.)

I think the first quarter of the movie is slow and deliberate, but some consider that boring. I need that calm before the storm, myself; I think the greatest horror movies all do that, and the worst ones often don't, because they think horror is only about the horror. The truth is, you appreciate/react to the horror far more when you've initially been lulled by the false comfort of slow pacing. I think it's a perfect foreshadowing, personally.

The Exorcist III is a sequel following the Police Detective from The Exorcist with a few returning characters from the film.

It's not an amazing movie but worth watching once for some good performances and a dream sequence with some bizarre cameos that are of the era.

It was directed by the Writer of the original film who also directed

https://tubitv.com/movies/466968/the_ninth_configuration

which is a worse movie but still has some cool ideas.

William Peter Blatty also wrote the original "Exorcist" novel.

Regarding William Friedkin's other movies: "The French Connection" is a stone-cold classic, and "Sorceror" is an arguably superior remake of the great "Wages of Fear."

Hausu was robbed. This movie is very funny to me though, I never really saw it as a horror movie as much as an Evil Dead kinda thing. Maybe it's because I wasn't raised Catholic. Enjoyed the crew's commentary since I don't think I'd watch this alone ever.
