He thought dismissing Gita meant dismissing her from the assault squad, not from the Xcom project itself.

@spedstyle: He dismissed them from X Com all together when he was setting up the squad for the mission.

You click clear unit from the lineup to get them out of the squad. If you click into the unit and then select "Dismiss soldier" and then ignore the big red warning popup that warns you that you're going to remove them permanently like Dan and Vinny did then you get what happened last video. I dunno why the option is there and so prominent really, only reason I can think of is if a soldiers had their will shredded and you want to get rid of them. It does give you a warning though so you can't blame the UI too much for them just clicking stuff.

@cagliostro88: I would expect they'd wait until after they've given all their soldiers low-level gene mods or MEC trooper conversions, though thankfully they don't have enough meld for that.

Despite the two deaths, I think that was actually a pretty good round. At least they went out fighting, unlike another two recent losses...

SOME TIPS:

  • EDIT: I think I was confused and the enemy was actually just in cover. It may only be sniper rifles that take an aim penalty at short range; I don't remember. Long guns like sniper rifles and LMGs are actually less accurate at short range. That's why you keep getting these "what the fuck why is it only 40% when he's right in front of me" moments. I think the idea is that with large unwieldy weapons it's difficult to track a target at close range - you can't make large adjustments to aim fast enough. It's something to bear in mind - not only is the shotgun ineffective at long range; LMGs and particularly sniper rifles are ineffective at very short range. Ideally your squad should be positioned accordingly, but it often doesn't work out that way, particularly when you're put on the back foot by things like mind control or surprise attacks.
  • When the game seems to want to make your character jump down to the tile behind the one you actually want, it probably means you've got the lower floor selected. Scroll up with the mouse wheel and you should have an easier time selecting the square you want. I had exactly that problem on exactly this type of map - I think the confusion is that on these alien ship maps it doesn't make the upstairs tiles transparent even when you've got downstairs selected. Or perhaps it's just something to do with the layout with that central raised walkway. Anyway, there isn't a clear indicator that you've got another floor selected, and you so rarely have to manually fiddle with that control the rest of the time, so it really is kind of bad UI. But it is something to bear in mind in future: pay close attention on UFO levels or you may end up accidentally jumping a trooper down into a really sticky situation.

That's one of my favourite changes Xcom 2 made, there are a lot more weapons to upgrade but once you research them they automatically apply to your entire crew. There's no need to manufacture and unequip/equip them each mission.

They haven't really been capturing live aliens, so they barely have any plasma weapons to research. And Zhang has a laser LMG. They could have built another one for Carla... but didn't.

They should be able to limp along for a while now after the Alien Base Assault calmed down the panic levels. But they're seriously behind on research. They will probably loose more soldiers to the tougher enemies that are starting to appear and won't be able to progress much in the story until they can build better interceptors. There's also a nasty surprise coming up...

Ah see I hated that. Made the upgrades seem so much more expensive since generally you'd only be bringing one of a gun on a mission anyway (especially once the DLC and War of the Chosen got added) since there were now the experimental weapons, Sparks and then the extra classes added in WotC. You're basically paying 150 supplies to upgrade assault rifles and then usually only bringing one per mission, maybe two if you have a psychic. I always lagged behind on buying weapons in Xcom 1 because I was cheap and made up for it with research into other stuff and gadgets, then capturing dudes to get the free light plasmas which slingshotted me up, I liked that there were different options like that.

Abby did her dang best, Jeff died by pure chance as is the way of this game. She lost Song because she was fighting 3 Sectoid Commanders. It's only by sheer miracle that Dan didn't lose anyone when he faced off against one.

Welp, punching that berserker wasn't the right call. There were units with shots on the berserker and not the mutons so their turns were dead after it was killed, while still leaving the mec in an exposed position. It would have been better to take those shots and get the mortally wounded mec to a better location.

The confusion is that you don't "Dismiss" people from the party. You "Clear" them from the squad screen. What you saw was them being deleted from the game.

@beartaco: No way. That was completely avoidable. Badly executed rollout. He shouldn't have been put in that position, and most certainly not left in it. Both her and Dan, in their returns to action have been careless. At least it happened on the battlefield though.

Yikes. Some bad commandeering going on here. Dan may be careless, but Abby still at this point doesn't seem to understand how the game even plays, and still blames the game after 3 bad clicks cause things to go to hell. Still love watching the 3 different styles, but I'm starting to question who the "heel" in this series is anymore.

all of them

jeff didn't have to die...on song, eh maybe he could have lived if they did their upgrading/loadout properly. But at this point, I'm considering Exquisite Corps' story to be "what if the only thing fighting an alien invasion were people who really meant well but just weren't that great at it?". it's like a self imposed handicap that makes the game a little more interesting to watch when they fuck themselves over hard and have to dig out of the hole, usually relying on luck alone.

This was probably the worst episode in terms of tactics by the team. Constantly moving the last squad member to take a turn the furthest into enemy territory is just asking for trouble. Which is exactly how Jeff ended up dying. You'd think they would have figured out by now that if you want to move someone ahead to scout for enemies it should be the first person you move so the rest of the squad still has their moves when they uncover enemies. That should really be a core fundamental in playing this game, especially this far in.

I don't know if it's because of the little break they took, but Abby seems to still lack a basic grasp of how the game works. Being impatient and blaming the game for misclicking is also not a great look.

Dan may be reckless and incredibly lucky, but at least he seems to understand the core mechanics of the game before completely throwing caution to the wind and being super lucky :D

@damodar: A scope gives a modest bonus to hit and is generally beneficial to snipers, but the biggest issue was simply that he's low rank. They need to rank up before they start to reliably hit enemies.

I feel like people in comments won't ever be happy unless Giant Bomb crew avoids every single mistake, which is not a very realistic expectation (I'm sure people would get annoyed if they had someone looking over their shoulder whenever they play pointing out every little thing they do wrong).

And more importantly, this series would be so less entertaining if they did everything perfectly. If you get a good start and get good upgrades early on, then the entire game is surprisingly easy on Normal difficulty, even when played with Iron Man setting. I'm happy that it's uncertain whether they'll finish the game at this rate (I'd bet they will though).

When I started watching this series I had only fumbled with Xcom for a while not really knowing the deep behind it, since i had never finished a campaign. During christmas i finished EW but I also had a bit of understanding from this comments. For example Building Foundry, having vertical adjacency, getting the South American bonus (for interrogation and autopsy).

The styles of play really cash pretty good, but losing Jeff now might have been worse then they picture, I'm sure glad they didn't researched the beacom yet, cause of what it might bring on them, but they need to start capturing aliens. Those mind controllers are a priority for interrogation

@damodar: I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I remember sniper rifles being less effective / useless when close range.

Man the controls in this game are finnicky! The only way to beat them is to slow down and take your time in those critical moments, it shouldn't be necessary but it absolutely is with the way this game is designed. You'll get 'em next time Commander Russell!

Yikes, a lot of shitty comments here. I don't understand being so adversarial towards the GB crew about this. XCOM is about rolling with the punches, that's the fun and drama of this game and feature. Abby, don't listen to these clowns.

Jeff's death could have been entirely avoided if Abby didn't make her last move moving him into the fog of war with half of her squad unable to meaningfully contribute to the revealed aliums.

Also, now that Dave is max rank, it's important that you let other squadmates get kills instead of feeding them to Dave.

this is precisely right. anyone coming to this series expecting an optimized or pro run at this thing isn't seeing the forest for the trees.

all of the fun, drama and substance to this series comes from the (sometimes flagrant) imperfections. all of the weird 'omfg dan sux' or 'i can't handle a gb playthrough' comments got old like, 15 episodes ago.

it sometimes makes me question if commenters really understand what this website is all about.

Vinny, youre a really laid back teacher lol =)

You've got the concept "maybe check everyones options first before doing anything" brewing nicely

...As well as "maybe this move will spot enemies and then everyone dies" finally both starting to sink in =P

I do think you have teach them about step out cover and why that one shot was so low (it applied cover); the concept that around any "corner" you 'occupy' a tile around that for LOS calculations... but retain your cover bonus. Also that certain angles will still apply the cover bonus even though they seem like they shouldn't, but it follows a logic. Since it works for bad guys too.

Once they can predict how well their shots might be from any given tile, they should be in a right-o position mechanically.

Loving this feature!

Scrolling the mouse wheel up and down allows for different floors to take priority on where the target goes, which helps with misclicking, and generally seeing the map layout. At least I think that was a feature in xcom 1, and not added in 2...

If you go to 12:33 in last week's, you can see the explanatory text for the button he clicks (twice): "Permanently dismiss this soldier from service".

"Wait, don't yada yada yada" - that's exactly how Dan ended up dismissing people.

Yeah, this is an important point I haven't seen much in the comments (though I haven't looked too hard). It's easy to use Dave to kill dudes since he basically sees across the map, but since he is max level you are just wasting exp. points. You'd be better off in the long run using other squad members whenever possible, and save Dave for situations in which you just need to clean up a mess near the end of your turn (or for whittling down a powerful enemy's health so that a squaddie can nab the kill).

edit: Also, remember Dave's disabling shot - it could have helped protect Jeff and probably Song at the end.
