The Giant Beastcast: Episode 133

It's The Giant Beastcast Q&A show where you ask the questions and we answer them! It's a pretty good concept.

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

I hope the next Q&A show will be back in New York so I can ask Jeff Bakalar how much faster a smart refrigerator can run compared to a regular refrigerator.

I don't like Q&A. Might skip this one :(

Something about call-ins on shows and podcasts, same with Q&A segments at panels, I handle it. Nothing against their decision to do this, it's just a weird thing I have. Even when people are well spoken, it makes me uncomfortable.

Regarding physical games going away: Even in 2011 when I tried to buy Skyrim for PC on release day at GameStop, that store had literally only ordered enough PC copies to fulfill their pre-orders, so despite having a whole shelf of 360/PS3 copies they didn't have one for me. I immediately went home and bought it on Steam and haven't bought a physical game since. I had already been heavily heading in that direction but that was basically the straw that broke the camel's back.

As far as the future goes, I don't think physical games will ever totally go away. Look at the vinyl album model. They never really fully went away because some small segment of collectors still loved having that physical medium with the cover art. I think physical games will eventually fall into this niche/collector's market, and will always have some floor of like 5% or 10% of overall sales.

So the one thing they maybe didn't mention as a valuable attribute to VR is the creative/artistic uses it provides.

I am a digital artist working in almost every arena; hand drawn frame by frame animation, to 3D design and sculpting, and I cannot tell you how many things have been made easier/faster/more 'fun' by being able to work in a tangible, life size environment using both hands. For the most part, people point to Google's Tilt Brush, but there are already dozens of other VR programs and applications that allow me to do what I normally do faster. From 3D animation/mocap-lite in Tvori, to sculpting entire characters, or environments in Masterpiece VR, I am easily able to construct what I want in at least half the time it might require in another program, or having to lug a camera around or buy a greenscreen, for the same results.

These are just two of many available, but for example, Masterpiece VR allows me to scale what I'm sculpting, with a wide variety of tools in real time, walk around my room to see it at angles, and get in for very fine detail work, as well as just turn my head to see the rest of the level or set of pieces to work on next. The ability to sculpt, manipulate and paint objects/characters/environmets, virtually wood carving carving or modelling clay allows a unique advantage to VR. For those skeptical about the quality of the exported 3D assets should know that everything is export-ready to .OBJ and otherwise if you want to fine-tune your work in your normal creative software.

Other uses of these headsets for my creative profession include utlizing things like the built in camera on the Vive, a sub-in for a go-pro, which for a certain project I am working on is invaluable video reference, as I can capture that using mirror mode, and import it to my 2D animation program for character or camera movement reference. The same thing can be done in Tvori, where I can puppet my hands on a pre-built mannequin, and "act" out a role; move the camera around a set I've built, and export the scene as .MOV to be supplimental reference for my 2D animation, no greenscreen or tiny ball suits required. There's a lot more software no doubt like these on the horizon, and while the offerings at the early-release of the vive were almost non-existant, I knew that these tools would become available, will continue to improve, and I have already earned back the price of the headset.

So, TLDR; VR is an incredibly viable tool for creativity for casual fun or for professional work already, and like edutainment or social spaces, is another arena VR allows one to do things that are impossible otherwise, or new approaches to existing concepts that can be more efficient for getting a job done, AND, in Masterpiece VR's example, this incredible sculpting tool is $20 on steam, doing the same thing as a stylus-based $1000 piece of software, and that is a steal- A Vive and that software combined cost less than Zbrush- and is only one example of many applications of it's type available. Something to consider for the creators out there looking at room size VR!

They already did Bakalar the greatest wrong that nothing can right, might as well break all the rules at this point.
