I'm with Bakalar, I cried over Edit Finch, as a father myself Gregory's story hit me hard in the feels.

There are multiple ways to use a urinal?

I had the same conversation about using the fly in the pants/underwear or not with a friend a few years ago, and I was completely incredulous that he actually used the fly in his underwear and only undid the zipper on his pants fly and left the top button buttoned, and he was completely incredulous that I didn't use it.

I still insist that it's faster to unbutton/unzip and just pull the front of your underwear down slightly than to dig into the fly hole in your underwear and risk getting your penis zippered on your pants.

It's great to be back-alar, indeed.

The weird flap on non-boxers is so they can expand to fit your junk, not to stick it in!

I hate to go there, but I've always assumed that the people I see at the urinal with their pants unbuttoned do so because they don't have enough, uh... let's say "clearance" to make that journey all the way through the flap? But if you folks say it's a time thing I'll believe it I guess.

Wow, @alex, how do you know "On the Silver Globe"? Have you read the book? The film took a lot of liberties, but the original material is still very off-beat and imaginative SF.

I'm sorry. I just don't understand the fan worship of Kojima. He has some great ideas and images but is a very bad story teller. The hope of having Del Toro working with him was that someone that knows how to tell a story (also not a misogynist.)

@qrdl: I have only seen the sort-of-finished film version, which is, uh, a trip. The whole thing used to be up on YouTube but I think it's been pulled down.

The book has been on my to read list for a while but I have yet to check it out.

This is the second podcast I listen to in the past month or so that has had an argument about pissing over the pants or through the hole. Fishing your wiener through the hole is the most brain dead thing I have ever heard. The zipper only exists so that you can pull your pants on/off without having to squeeze yourself into a rigid waistband. It must take so much longer to bend your arm around and find the flap than simply pulling your pants slightly down and getting a nice breeze around your junk.

Tune in next week for the discussion about wiping standing up or sitting down (anyone who stands is a freak).

For some reason certain people tend to start shouting whenever brands come up on this podcast.... All I know is this podcast is better with less brand sirening, not more. I've come to the realization that there's only like two people on this podcast I actually want to hear talk at length about movies. One use to run a film site and the other is my favorite youth minister. Good riddance to the postcard/kiss-on-the-cheek section. It was fun the first few times but I've been skipping it most weeks. Other than that a pretty good episode. Thanks as always for the Beastcast.

@crimsonjester: Yeah, Kojima is pretty much a thoroughly average anime/manga writer inexplicably given a leash of infinite length within the video game industry. To his credit, the parts of MGS2 that talk about the power of controlling information and perception of events/history through manipulating the internet were decently smart for being like a 2001 or 2002 game, but that's like 0.001% of the entire series, and the rest of the series' story is overly long and not written very well.

Abby must be trolling about chips.

I'm getting kinda tired of hearing Dan practically fellate Kojima with praise while talking over any criticism of him. Vinny was on point, Kojima's trailers are just so uninformative and masturbatory. Especially after his lies in the MGSV trailers.

@alex: It's my mother who insisted I read it in high school. I, stupidly, doubted SF this old (1903) could be any good. It's like Verne with a bigger scope and mixed with what was brewing in Polish literature at the time - the disillusionment with positivism and pessimism about human nature (tribalism, religion etc.).

I recommend it as much as I recommend Lem.

Yeah I actually didn't finish this episode because of Dan, 1st time that's happened with a Beastcast.

Yup, 100%. I know people are probably still going to insist that it's one of Dan's "bits", but his Kojima fanboy blabber that it's "the greatest story ever told", Kojima being a "genius" and "everything makes sense", "MGS is *philosophy* " etc and really liking that, as Vinny perfectly puts it, masturbatory prerelease stuff (which of course the fanboys crave)...

Nah. Just nah.

e: a part of me kind of hopes that during the discussion of Nier: Automata Kojima gets brought up and taken down a peg (in a constructive manner of course)
