I'm incredibly excited for Two Point Hospital. Looks like they're really going for that same style as classic Theme Hospital, and I'm all for that. It doesn't need to be super ambitious; a modern take on that game would be a delight (not least because the original is at the point where it sometimes plays up on newer machines).

@soulcake: He was comparing the cows in Vietnam to deer in US. At least that is how I understood it.

I've been avoiding podcasts in case someone slips a comment about game of the year or an email or something. I'm still listening to the Christmas podcasts. Do they avoid talking about goty last year Here? Interested in hearing Alex is back and his trip but don't wanna get spoiled on anything I'm still listening to.

I just involuntarily laughed out loud at work at swimming away from a nuke.

Also, I used to go to Cedar Point, not Park, all the time as a kid. Of all of the parks I have been to in the US (Great America, Disney World, Disney Land, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardends), Cedar Point is by far the best. Millenium Force is insane. Magnum was pretty impressive too before that came out.

I couldn't agree more with Jeff on the Beach stuff. Us pale people we don't really like the beach. Getting sunburn, or having to stay most of the time in the shade, can screw pretty much any beach experience you intend on having. I'm actually even more extreme, cause i prefer rainy days to sunny days.

The Nintendo Labo piano actually uses the IR camera in the Joy-Con to detect which keys are down, as well as the positions of the knobs that change the sound effects. The image below kind of shows how that's working:

Theme Hospital was also on PS1, which I only remember because I played the everloving crap out of the demo.

It's well worth a pick-up on GOG if you want to check it out, it's aged surprisingly alright, but the only thing it's missing is an endless sandbox mode, iirc.

Kudos for the optimistic and measured take on the Nintendo Labo thing. It looks dumb! It looks cool! It will break easily! I probably wouldn't want to put my Switch or Joy-Cons in those things either!

I'm probably gonna get the robot one anyway.

It's difficult to see SWATting someone – who is then killed by police – as involuntary manslaughter. While you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise, law enforcement officers are sapient creatures capable of making their own decisions; ostensibly you would think that sending cops to someone's house is not a death sentence, even if that person is said to be holding people hostage.

Someone who is cruel enough to SWAT someone should be rehabilitated, but the death of the victim isn't on that person's head – it's on the cop who saw an unarmed man, who may or may not have moved his hand towards his waistband (as if that would justify a killing), and shot him.

@entireties said:

Actually I think it's rather easy to do so, under the manslaughter by an unlawful and dangerous act doctrine. This is based on English manslaughter law, but as I understand it, US law is broadly similar. The act must be:

  • Be intentional -- you can't unintentionally SWAT someone.
  • Be unlawful -- I'd assume knowingly submitting a false report to the police is.
  • Lead the reasonable person to realise that some other person is at risk of physical harm -- note that the requirement is not that death is foreseeable, only that there is risk of physical harm, which I don't think is in question.
  • Be the cause of death.

The only point where it could break down is the last step, but I don't think it's much of a leap and there is no break in causation. Under English (and likely US) law, you can argue that none of the police intervention would have happened but for the original call, so the caller remains liable unless the police act negligently or in an unforeseeable way. If the police do act negligently, then under US law I believe you could apply the concurrent actual causes doctrine - BOTH the initial call AND the negligent actions of the police are required to cause the death, but removing _either_ cause would have prevented it, thus both parties are liable.

Whether this is the right approach to take is debatable (personally I think policing practices are a major enabling factor, so even if you harshly punish the SWATer, something else needs to change as well), but the legal framework for treating a SWATing call resulting in death as involuntary manslaughter is more or less already there.
