The Giant Beastcast: Episode 158

We tick a bunch of things off the game list including E3 prep, Fallout 76, and a new Sonic racing game! We also discover more essentials that make Dan tick... like his knowledge of baking soda. Finally, Jeff spends a lot of time talking about a tick on his taint.

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

Just like Dan, I also found a tick on my scrotum as a teenager and had to ask my mum to get it off for me. I'm still confused how it got there to this day... (especially since the UK suburbs aren't epecially known for harbouring ticks).

In Jr High I'd walk to my friend's house for lunch and play Street Fighter 2 on the SNES every day. It was the best.

I was hoping for someone to have played Yoku's Island Express. Basically a 2D puzzle-platformer/metroidvania mixed with pinball. I've seen people call it a pinballvania. It looks, sounds and plays amazing, and it seems like a great game to bring with you on a trip on the Switch.

In disagreement with Vinny, the core Pokemon RPGs are very mechanically dense. I think it's accessible in a way because you can get through those games without engaging with most of the mechanics, but things like EVs, IVs, Catch rates, encounter rates, berries, poke puffs, hundreds of items, hundreds of moves, almost 1000 pokemon. It has a hell of a lot of baggage and density.

@alistercat: But all that stuff you listed can be (and I suspect is by the majority of players) completely ignored in the interest of completing the main game. At the end of the day, all those systems are just extra layers (IMO superfluous systems) feeding into the basic rock-paper-scissors format that's existed since the beginning.

I also heard "Far: Lone Sails" as "Far Loan Sales". The actual title makes a lot more sense by comparison, haha. A game title where 2 of the 3 words are homophones is maybe not the best idea.

@kirkyx: gameplay is improved from one but the story and characters of one are better (though some of sith lord's companions are pretty cool, Kreia in particular).

Kotor 2 is so much better that it is barely even held down by the minor detail of literally being an unfinished game on release.

The thing is though.. Kotor is a game about cool Star Wars shit and Kotor 2 is a game about how much of Star Wars is total bullshit.

@noobsauce: I couldn’t disagree more! I think KotOR II is the single best story ever told in the Star Wars setting, and I find its cast of characters vastly more compelling than KotOR I’s.

I do still like KotOR I a bunch—it was a formative gaming experience for me, and I still have really fond memories of it. KotOR II, though, is probably my all-time favourite game—and I think it holds up much better than the first, too. I replayed both last year, and came away with, if anything, an even stronger positive opinion of KotOR II, while I found that KotOR I’s story, dialogue and roleplaying systems really hadn’t stood the test of time nearly as well.

@kirkyx: I appreciate what II's story tries to do, I just think it misses the mark, which is a shame because I think the areas it explores are very interesting. I think most of my issues just stem from the game being incomplete. Since we're talking about them, I'll probably give them a revisit soon. Who knows, maybe I'll end up liking two more this time.

@meatwad2567: I even said in my post that it's accessible because all of that can be ignored if you just want to go through the game.

They sounded pretty certain that a new elder scrolls game would be far in development by now. But it seems like Elder Scrolls 6 is not in development at all based on this 4chan leak:

No Caption Provided

Considering the guy got the name right for Fallout 76 and the fact that it's multiplayer back in December it seems like it's legit.

No joke, whatsoever: I would absolutely, 100%, watch a "Dan goes back in time to use future-knowledge to become rich and powerful, but has no idea how anything actually works" movie. That legitimately has some serious potential.

I'm happy that Vinny spoke and paid his respect to TB. However, i'm disappointed the West coast did not bother to even mention it in their podcast news section. Whatever you think of the man, it was news worthy.

I am only a premium member to this site because of the way Totalbiscuit spoke about his love of their content. I don't agree he was a negative influence on the gaming space, yes he was opinionated and yes he was abrasive and yes he did call out gaming journalists for their actions but most importantly he spoke up for us the gamers .

I will miss the guy a lot and remember him for the years of great content he provided. Maybe the West coast could at least try to be a bit more respectful in future and not just stick their head in the sand like they did with Kingdom Come.

I know from listening to many a game devs perspective TB did more for their games lifespan than this site ever will and that's a fact my friends.

Anyway i still love this site i'm just disappointed in the West Coast.

Cheers

I love the idea of Dan jumping out of a time portal/machine/whatever blabbling in a weird foreign language (maybe considered a weird dialect if he went to the British isle) aka today standard american english to a bunch of illiterate people about equations and gravity. I give him half an hour to an hour at best.
