The Giant Beastcast: Episode 162

This week we talk about The Crew 2, Octopath Traveler, and Wreckfest. We briefly get into 32 bit systems and 64 bit systems (which is a mistake) but we also get in a mention of Minsc (which is great). Catch it!

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

To clarify re the Crew 2 , you can use the Plane's,Boats anytime in the open world, you just quick switch to it, you can customize Car's, Liveries etc.The Car handling is quick customizable under Pro Settings and is one of the better Car handling models out there.

I have to disagree the Crew 2 is one of the most fun driving car games around, the main draw not being the events which i find fun but the act of exploration, where else do you get to Fly Spitfires, Drive Monster Trucks and Hovercrafts.

P.S PVP is coming for free later this year.

The bit part when talking about console generations is about the processor: 8/16/32/64-bit. We are still on 64-bit processors. The reason people said Mario 128 was because we were used to refer to the console generations by calling its bits, which was used as marketing to sound more advanced.

I know it's a trend but I'm starting to get bored with games released in a semi-finished state. Ubisoft may be the best at supporting their games after the release, but I'm starting to get burned out by these tactics. I wish the developers would use additional six months to make content for their game, instead of the current trend of "supporting" their game by adding content that wasn't ready/available on launch.

I guess people want patches and constant content updates to make them feel their game is alive, and there's probably no going back, but sometimes I just miss the days when games were finished on their release.

I don't understand the Amy Hennig love, Uncharted is fucking awful storywise Nathan Drake is such an unlikable pig who I actively root for to die and I didn't care for The Last of Us either. Also much liek Phil Specter and Warren Wright if an issue with a writer/project lead keeps recurring we kinda have to look at the person and not the company I don't get the EA bashing on this one she weirdly left two straight big projects

I would probably go Meliora deluxe (its the basic version of the album + Popestar EP), Prequelle, Infestissumam deluxe (same thing, base version of the album + If You Have Ghosts EP), then Opus Eponymous if you're looking to get into Ghost. Opus has some weird production on it and the songwriting is like heavy metal scooby-doo music. Its a lot of fun but they really honed in on their sound from the second disc on and nailed it on Meliora.

I think the attempted anonymity of the band was a lot of fun for a while, although both Rob Zombie and the vocalist for Behemoth actually sold out the vocalist/main guy of the band on Instagram by just posting photos of him hanging out backstage with them prior to Meliora hitting. My favorite rumored thing right now is that the guy handling bass live for the band is the former guitarist for Bloodbath.

Quick edit: "Faith" off of Prequelle is a hell of a song though.

Dan's complaints about Westworld make it seem like he should hate Metal Gear as well. Metal Gear literally has the things you hate about Westworld.

I personally like the human consciousness transfer story in Westworld, episode 4 of this season was amazing. Though Dolores' and Maeve's story dragged in the middle, so that sucked.

You're expecting Giant Bomb to actually know about a game before declaring final thoughts about it, they haven't been that type of site for a long time.

Also Westworld is incredible and Dan says "it's up its own ass!" simply because it doesn't spoon feed everything (thought it did answer damn near every question I had in the finale). Yet he loves metal gear's story which is the most up its own ass anything has ever been in recorded history.

Dan has a few catchphrase like “Is that that thing where?” “Brrrrap!” “Is that a thing!?” “That thing is a thing!” Really several sentence fragments where he says thing often multiple times. “(Action/Adjective) business”

He definitely gets that from his dad. I think they cover that on one of their podcasts together.

@doncabesa: My man, as I said in the podcast, I've played about five hours of The Crew 2. I know enough about it to determine that I'm getting zero pleasure out of playing it at this stage and am personally done with it. There were definitely a few things I wasn't sure about--and I tried to qualify my language when discussing those things--but none of those particular details are germane to the fact that I'm having no fun at all with it and don't recommend it.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. Also my point wasn't you must have fun, it was that people shouldn't be coming here looking for big in depth review style opinions on this site. The quick look philosophy of getting a basic layout of most covered games is enough. My annoyance with Dan and his quick dismissals of things he hasn't spent any time trying to learn about colored my comments about you. For this I deeply apologize, and now I go into hibernation until September.

@danryckert please google diet soda. You'll quickly learn that diet soda is not a 'healthier' option. It has been correlated to increased risk of stroke and Alzheimer's, and chemical sweeteners are tied to endocrine changes which can cause weight gain. Granted, these are correlation rather than causation, but chemical sweeteners are a hot topic of research and the more research that comes out, the more we understand the negative long term effects of chemical sweeteners.

I feel like people's impression of Octopath will depend strongly on whose chapter 1 stories they chose to experience in the demo. Some of those sections are just more fun than others in both a mechanical and narrative sense.

Give the first season a go. I also recommend having someone to discuss with and/or listening to a podcast about what's going on, if you're interested in different takes or feel like you need more explanation. I highly recommend a podcast called Decoding Westworld. I listened to their recaps and discussions after each episode of the show.

In As Good As It Gets, Nicholson's character is saying that, for a lot of people (but unfortunately not the main characters), the past is filled with stories of fun times down by the lake, riding in boats and eating noodle salad.

So "Good Times, Noodle Salad" isn't an insane non-sequitur, it's just Nicholson summarizing the memories of someone who didn't experience a lot of trauma.

They're just wrong about this, right?

It's a very common mistake to make though. For a long time people believed that every new generation of consoles meant that the CPU bits doubled. The truth is we never went past 64 bit.

PS2 was 128 bit? Huh?

Sega even printed "128 bit graphics" right on the Dreamcast box, and it was correct in the sense that the system had a 128-bit floating point unit. Sony could've called the PlayStation 2 "128-bit" in a similar sense. This is actually a commonly misunderstood aspect of the Atari Jaguar, as the system had a 64-bit bus and a couple of other 64-bit components, and that's why Atari could rightfully say that it was a 64-bit system in a sense; it had nothing to do with Atari adding numbers together to come up with 64. Obviously, bits don't necessarily tell you much about how powerful a system was, as the Intellivision had a 16-bit CPU, but obviously couldn't be expected to push the sorts of graphics (or anything, for that matter) that the Genesis or SNES could.

Anyone else feel like the ragging on Jeff for simply being an employee of CNET has been getting a bit...excessive lately? Feels like they've spent a combined total of about half an hour of podcast and interview time "ribbing" him about it since E3.

It's gotten old and feels more malicious than playful at this point.

@heyitsdale: This may be true, but this sentiment has been echoed by many in the comments section, and the duders seem to ignore that piece of feedback, so I'm afraid it falls on deaf ears over at East.
