DMCA stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This was an act in the American law which has influenced how copyrights are controlled in the online world. Getting a DMCA notice is a shorthand for when someone's public content is flagged for including copyrighted material and is removed. This most often happens on Youtube where the copyright holders (or people pretending to be them) can get videos removed without proof of infraction (requiring the person whose content is removed to actively question the removal).

So glad Austin joined Giant Bomb so that at least SOMEONE would play Xenoblade. It would have been pretty much ignored by the rest of the crew otherwise

FYI @austin_walker Xenoblade Chronicles X has X pronounced as Cross (though no one will really notice) and the Chronicles part is just an addition Nintendo of America put on that no one says (because it's cumbersome). Xenoblade X is much easier. Nevertheless, the whole name is dumb.

Skyward Sword had Link 'n Zelda romance. Albeit very Disney type romance but they were totally a thing in that game. There's a ton wrong with Skyward Sword but the story stuff was cool man.

Also the only good Valkyria Chronicles is the first one. With every iteration they added more and more pandering anime garbage effectively making the characters more annoying than entertaining. The core game itself was fine but they also added super grindy class and weapon upgrade systems to hinder any sort of fun. They repeated the same maps over and over which staled strategy and variety. I love the first game, but the games that followed bummed me out man.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. The story (especially the final third and end reveal) is incredibly well done (and clever in a meta way) and the Disney comparison is an apt reference on how it was intended.

I can see the issues with Skyward Sword as well (which is why I ultimately agree with Patrick's 4/5 review) but for me the whole just clicks in such a way to be one of my favourite in the series (probably in my personal top 10 favourite games to play beginning-to-end even if I don't think it is objectively one of the best games of all time).

But the narrative in that game, especially the way it questions the positions that Link, Zelda and Ganon play in that fiction is surprisingly perceptive.

@bushlemon: Nope. Although the long Kotaku talk is effectively about the connection between Developers/Publishers wishes (especially in the aims of PR/Marketing) and the work of Reviewers/Journalists, so you can sort of pretend they did*

*But the conversation doesn't really fit.

We actually don't know why Bethesda/Ubisoft cut communication with Kotaku. We shouldn't just take Kotaku's assumption of the reason as fact. Kotaku doesn't know either. It's all speculation. The leaks could have been the reason, part of the reason, or not the reason at all.

If I were running Bethesda or Ubisoft, I would order the exact same blackout on that outlet. Their "breaking news journalism" ultimately hurts the game company's plans and bottom line.

It's not at all "petulance" on their behalf to stop sending stuff to games review companies that have f'd them over.

I don't really see what the problem is.

Kotaku wants to run stuff as they get it.

Ubisoft doesn't want their stuff run early.

Therefore they don't send anything early to Kotaku. And they don't comment on the situation because that's a bad practice to get into when you're running a business. You can't comment on every little thing, especially when it relates to a news outlet who is just going to run all of those emails and press releases as news.

@wrenchninja: Thanks for making this!

At 00:02:12 Vinny specified the "tragic events... around the world" clearly referencing Paris as well as the earthquake/tsunami off the coast of Japan and terrorist attacks in Beirut. I think wording it "A few words for peace" is more what was meant.

You can tell Black Ops 3 is a hot topic game when they devote 3 minutes of Bakalar time to it.

Although I hear 3 minutes in Bakalar Time is like 3 hours in the real world..

I am of the opinion that Fallout 4 was originally supposed to be a stand alone expansion just like New Vegas and The Pitt was to Fallout 3. Something happened and Bethesda decided to delay and deny the existence of a Fallout: Boston which is eventually released as Fallout 4. Most of the time was probably spent on retooling the crafting engine and gunplay along with a new plot from scratch and the choice to have a voiced PC. The base building and ability speak custom names were just last minuite add-ons that were not well implemented. They also decided to keep the menu system the same..

Just in case people want to know the books that were mentioned in the podcast.

Talking ships = The Liveship Traders-Robin Hobb

Bright elf in a dark elf body = Legend of Drizzt - R.A. Salvatore

Name of the Wind = The Kingkiller Chronicles - Patrick Rothfuss

Shananana = Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

I may have missed some, but there ya go.

Re: PS2s on modern tellys.

I bought a PS2 HDMI adaptor and it works fantastically well. Set the console to component output before you first use it and job's a good 'un.

It's not going to magically transform your PS2 into a 1080p games machine but stopped me hunting around for cables and fiddling with my AV receiver.

I have to go back on my comment from the Just Cause 3 vid. I thought it was too crowded and thought that Steph was playing the silent partner, but considering that they approached Jeff before the GB guys suggests there was an expectation they would need more people on the vid at the time. Plus the whole running out of mics thing.

Mea culpa.

The thing about posting leaked information is that it will only be seen by a small group of people that are super passionate about games. A guy I know is a huge Fallout fan, and a few months before it was announced, he had no idea that some info had been leaked, specifically that it would be set in Boston.

I don't think it really messes up their marketing plans, because these huge marketing campaigns are not directed towards people who visit gaming sites on a daily basis. There was a Fallout 4 ad behind home plate at the World Series this year. I don't know this for a fact, but I would argue that a large portion of the audience watching the World Series doesn't visit gaming sites, or even know what Fallout is.

It seems petty on both sides. Not responding to requests is one thing, but posting an article complaining about it (to generate clicks) makes Kotaku seem like a bitter boyfriend posting on Facebook that his ex-girlfriend won't return their texts. It's whiny and is designed only to make Bethesda and Ubisoft look bad.

If you burned your bridges, deal with it. It seems like Kotaku doesn't need official statements from publishers to get their info anyways.

All that being said, I don't think it's unethical to post leaked information. Post whatever you want. Just don't act surprised when the offended party doesn't want to work with you anymore. You can't have it both ways.

i gotta say, i side with the publishers on the kotaku thing. this isnt just breaking an embargo or something, they were posting illegally obtained secret documents. we're talking about information that not even every employee AT each respective company was allowed to see. kotaku only gets away with it because they didnt break any rules, the only person breaking rules (breaking contracts) is their sources. and as long as kotaku protects their source, nobody is going to take the fall for what is basically a crime. think about it this way, what if kotaku had hacked into bethesdas internal email client and found that page of script. that'd be illegal, right? bethesda would be able to take actual legal action against kotaku. ok, so why is this any different? why does having a middle man make a crime excusable? youre still stealing secret company information and damaging, not only their business and prospective sales, but internal planning. a lot of time and effort, from a lot of people, goes into planning video game announcements and PR, and a lot of peoples hard work goes down the drain when the instant you flippantly throw their secrets on the internet for all to see.
