EDIT: I can't speak to games that were sold through GameSpy, but I know for sure that the online aspect of the first Borderlands now just runs through Steam itself (and it's waaaay better for it). Gearbox were pretty good about switching over as soon as GameSpy wound things up.

As a guy whose favourite game was A Link to the Past until Skyrim came along, it's tough to see Breath of the Wild and not want to blow hundreds of dollars on a system I would otherwise never touch.

Also the Wii U version of BOTW doesn't have any second screen inventory stuff. They took it out, claiming that the way they have it on the Switch is the best use of UI.

Cynics believe that it was just a way of not having the Wii U version be better than the Switch version.

Podcast Addict showed the length of this episode to be 30 mins and I was quite let down. That wouldn't even cover the length of my morning commute. I am glad to see that's not the case. XD

I still don't get the big problem with friend codes. You enter the number once and you're done. Kind of like a phone number! Add in that there's a few other ways to find people and it seems fine.

And searching nicknames would be a disaster same as searching on steam since they aren't unique.

Farpoint is out mid May, comes with the gun. 79 bucks I think. Farpoint has co-op.

There are lots of games coming for the PSVR, but it's mostly indie stuff.

Star Trek Bridge Crew is also coming out in May I believe. They came out and said there was 40 hours of game in that thing. Roguelike campaign and whatnot. They have recently said that they would be making one of the classic ships as well. Can't remember which ship because I don't watch Star Trek. Anyways, two ships sounds pretty sweet to me :)

There are also more games being developed for the PS Aim controller (gun) that will be announced probably around the launch of the Aim. PSVR has been semi crippled by it's shitty move controllers not having joysticks. The Aim controller solves all that stuff, and that's probably why they are selling it for way less than what I would have expected. They want it to become something everyone has.

I'm glad that Zelda got some more time without getting into any specifics. I've been trying to keep my exposure at a minimum and over the last few days that's been a lot harder. Here's hoping my game makes it home before I do.

I'm ok with it when on a internal EU or midnight flight, but if we are on a direct +10h flight to NA or Asia don't steal those cm's of precious space you have on that already crappy flight. I would never ever do that to a grown up behind me on high speed trains, let alone in a plane. Yet I do see it way too often.

@vinny GameSpy never sold games. They were a matchmaking/server browsing solution that other game developers/publishers paid for. It was basically middleware.

The internet's always been like that and it kinda sucks. I love it when people have different opinions but its so easy to see the majority try to squelch them. I mean I've voiced my opinion before on why I'm not really interested in BotW, despite it looking like a good game, but I still want people to have lots of fun because I love video games. Hell later today I'm going to go join a friend of mine who's super stoked about all of this and watch him enjoy some BotW.

I really thought about picking up a copy of Horizon today but I'm getting my last wisdom tooth removed and I'm not sure an intense action/adventure game is what I'm in the mood for during my recovery. I actually have a sizeable backlog of chill indie games already to keep me busy and if anything I'm leaning towards getting Night in the Woods instead based on Alex's endorsement. I feel like I still want to save some money for Persona 5 and the Virtues Last Reward port.

Thanks as always for this podcast. Vinny continuing to drop truth beasts on Dan's bad habits. Seriously why does everything need to be a bet and you can't just do stuff out of curiosity? Never change Vinny, Dan please continue changing and getting better.

On a side note - I think I may cave in and buy a switch now that I watched the end of Dan's quick look of Zelda. The end game gear and powers he had really are making me want to play it. I'm a sucker for progress in games. I am absolutely loving Horizon but there could be room for two games in my future since it seems like the wait for Mass Effect and Nier is going to be a long one. My problem is I only have a 27 inch monitor to play it on so it wouldn't be anywhere near the experience someone like Dan who plays it on a 60 inch OLED TV is getting :(

Good luck with the dentist. I had to get my wisdom teeth removed last year and it wasn't too bad. I would say that Horizon has a very touching story and the combat is phenomenal. I actually think the story is one of the best parts of Horizon, I don't know how everyone would resonate with it but Aloy and her journey has a great reason behind it and you feel the weight behind the actions of the characters in the world. The UI is completely customizable so if you want to just disable it and gaze at an absolutely gorgeous world that is an option too. I spent about 2-3 hours just slowly walking around looking at things before I even left the first area after level 10. I love the characters and everything. I would recommend it highly if you are slowly trying to convince yourself not to play it.

@steveurkel: Oh I definitely plan on getting it. It's just that it's such a great time to be playing video games that I don't feel the need to jump in on the zeitgeist right away and have more than enough things to keep me busy.

I know the fanboys and girls wont care, but the Switch's screen is plastic. The Dock also has been scratching them and will scratch yours eventually. Press don't want to rock the boat while giving 10/10s but it is important for people to know the truth.

Friend codes are there so that pervs can't creep on children over the internet using Nintendo's online services. What's difficult to understand there?

Nintendo's sales pitch has always been that they offer products you can give to children and that they can use them without adult supervision. switching over to an Xbox or PlayStation style internet service would kill the value proposition for parents.

@philscorpio: This is a really weird way to frame an issue that I hadn't even heard about prior to this. Especially since the press was on top of the Left JoyCon issues that cropped up after the consoles started getting out there. Why would you think they'd avoid talking about this?

Vinny's attitude toward BotW is very frustrating. It is, of course, totally fine to disagree regarding the game's quality. That said, he hasn't played the game, and at feels as if he's questioning the validity of people's enjoyment; this is not something he normally does. He tends to accept sentiment regarding a game's quality. BotW seems to have crossed a threshold for Vinny, where it can't possibly be that good, and as a critic, he has to express his doubt as if it is a duty. It's possible for a game to be exceptional in every sense of the word, and worth celebrating as such. Vinny has spoken before about protecting consumers; he has a tendency to well overdo it.

He's right when he says the game cherrypicks from the last 10 years of gaming canon. What it does that is hard to put into words is permit those mechanics to fade into the background. They feel integrated into the reality of the game's universe. You don't play a game so much as you adventure, and the mechanics 'just happen' as a result.

It is capable of doing this because it doesn't over-codify itself. There are no huge completion lists, stat systems or mana bars. Weapons are ranked based on a dead-simple damage value. It is mechanically light so as not to distract from the wonder it creates, but simultaneously, there are complex interactions between mechanics that arise as a result of your desire to adventure -- the fun is found therein. Most games aim to make their mechanics rewarding. Zelda has allowed me to discover a new and profound kind of enjoyment, and mechanics are merely servants toward that end.
