The Giant Beastcast: Episode 95

The time has come to get real about the fascinating world of coin collecting. Yeah, there's still Zelda to talk about, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and lawsuits, but honestly, where else are you going to learn about those sweet Fast and Furious toys? Here. That's where.

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

Just a tip for players in Zelda early on.

1: Get 5 apples

2: Cook them all together

3: Sell it

Boom, 50 rupees

Do the same thing with other stuff like Raw meat, Durians, and bananas too. Lots of money in cooking, even though ya might not like it.

@goldrock: Again, the person in question is currently in school learning about this stuff, and as I said, it's not uncommon for adults as they get older to forget things they learning in classes no immediately relevant to their daily lives. I'm only a couple years out of college and I already didn't know most of what he talked about.

I couldn't disagree more. I evoked a lot of Princess Mononoke and the thrill of clambering about my own hiking trails near my home, everywhere I went in the game. I could relax to the gentle piano playing as I let my horse hit the roads and I could watch the painterly skies go from day to night. It never felt like work, it took effort, but fun effort.

@jinoru: It's just so flat. There isn't much scenery to enjoy. The stuff I genuinely liked was the Zora stuff and that whole area is a straight-forward canyon. I'm liking the shrines a lot, however, the environmental puzzles and interacting with people is fun. But to get to those bits of real enjoyment I have to trudge through really lackluster things. Jim Sterling said it best that there's a really wonderful game that you have to work to get to.

The file on the RSS feed still appears to be borked. So much so that it kills the player on my phone in a couple of spots. I may have to resort to listening to this one via the website, which will make my commute substantially less awesome.

@themanwithnoplan: Yeah, if you just regularly raid apple trees when you see them, you A) end up with like 500 apples pretty quickly, B) have a pretty good source of healing if you just throw em all together, and C) could sell them like you suggest because you can probably find apples more rapidly than you actually need healing.

My own hot strat for apples: if you're in a rush, you can usually use the jump/hop button to collect the bottom 2 apples on the tree (low-hanging fruit as it were), meaning you collect 2/3 of the apples on the tree. It's just the top one that requires climbing, and I usually don't bother.

Totally what I did too. I didn't realize till late game that you can also get a club or hammer and knock them down (instead of chopping away the whole tree, which gets a little messy if you're just tryin to get apples.)

I, too, assumed Jeff B. was older than Alex. Probably because he's married with a child. Not that that is some indicator of a standard age, but it makes him seem older.

I feel like the Mass Effect Andromeda hate is a bit overblown. It's mostly the faces and facial animations. The dialogue is also hit-or-miss, but that was ALWAYS the case. Anyway, I played up to the trial cut-off point, and I'm gonna list three things I absolutely liked about it:

-On foot movement. The dashes and jump jets make both exploration and combat much more fun.

-Nomad. As a Mako hater I was skeptical of this one, but again, fun exploration.

-Vetra seems pretty awesome. Liked her right away and want to see more of her backstory.

@vinny Those audio glitches are also present on the most recent Bombcast and the last Film & 40s.

Examples:

Around 7:22 on the non-premium version of this week's Bombcast. It also happens on the premium podcast at the same spot (6:42) (listening to this again, the skip is less pronounced on the premium version but it definitely still happens in the same spot).

17:23 on the latest Film & 40s.

Bakalar reading that Zelda email and trailing off with "I'm sorry, this is the nerdiest thing I've ever read" was so good

How weird is it that them talking about Nier Automata has made me kind of angry? The things they seem to dig about this new game (the music, the world, the philosophical themes) ARE THE THINGS THAT MADE THE FIRST ONE GREAT. You know, something fans of the original have been screaming on the internet for half a decade now.

Edit: Just to make sure I'm not misunderstood: I know that's not a healthy reaction and I'm happy people finally give Nier and Yoko Taro the time of day.
