When it comes to battery life on the iPhone 12, it's not really an issue - it averages about an hour less than than the iPhone 11, which was easily the best battery life in any of Apple's phones to date. So yeah the 12 is still really good.

That being said if you just want a nice spec bump and do not care about the better screen, better cameras, and 5G the current iPhone SE is great. It even has WiFi 6 for good measure, and the cameras as well as the hardware running them will definitely be an upgrade from the 6 anyway.

I do personally really care about the camera's capabilities and the 6 inch screen, so I'm looking to upgrade from my phone that's a few years old to the 12 sooner or later. iOS 14 is rad though, I'm loving the integration of the widgets so far and the App Library, keeping my home screen nice and clean.

I traded in a 2018 MacBook Pro (i9, 15") for an M1 MacBook Air. It's certainly seems comparatively faster and more powerful, and can go 1.5-2 days on a single charge (with casual use, mind you). For example, the TouchID button: I would need to hold my finger down for 2-5 seconds on the 2018 Pro, on the M1 Air I can tap it and it registers. The M1 Air also executes tasks in Final Cut or Illustrator without flinching that would make my 2018 Pro lock up and/or crash the app. Basically, color me impressed so far.

Hah I feel the infosec stuff. We do yearly training that entails hours of html5 slideshow with quizzes that you can't skip through because it waits until the VO is done with each slide.

To elaborate further on my original Xbox clock capacitor removal process (2002 model)...

I didn't have any special tools (other than the Torx screwdrivers) so I used my fingers. It looked pristine but started leaking when I gently prodded at it to see if there's any give. I washed my hands furiously because I feared it might melt my fingers or something, but I don't think it was that corrosive as it did no damage to my skin.

I took some paper towel, poked the capacitor through a small slit (like a tooth poking through the rubber membrane at a dentist) to prevent more liquid from dripping onto the PCB. I was hoping to be able to rock the capacitor back and forth until it came off, but the legs were too short and it didn't budge. So I just wiggled it forcefully for a few minutes and eventually it started to give, then came off pretty cleanly.

This is not a guide!

Working at a small company it's always interesting to hear how it is when there's several companies and thousands of employees under one umbrella.

Halfway through this episode and theres some REAL old man yelling at cloud energy going on except it’s like ...young man yelling at the corporate cloud. Vinny seems to be the sole voice of reason here.

I'm on several Mac discussion boards, and at first there was so much skepticism toward the M1 Macs. Everyone thought Apple was bullshitting and that it was just benchmarks making the new Macs look good. But then everybody who got one has had experiences similar to you where the new Macs perform on a level completely different to anything out there. It's absolutely wild.

The fact that the benchmarks on the new base model MacBook Air put it above the current 16" MacBook Pro with an i9 (which costs 3x the price) for all tasks that don't require a discrete GPU is just nuts, and compared to most of the current Intel-based Windows laptops it's a bloodbath, especially from a price perspective. It's a $1000 laptop that has a CPU that outperforms the extreme majority of desktop CPUs.

The other thing is that they weren't kidding about making stuff work with the ARM architecture. Outside of Docker and a few other developer-related things, nearly everything has either been ported to work natively or works fine using x86 emulation. I was concerned about music software but everything I use has been confirmed to work already.

The other other thing to keep in mind is that this is all with the budget-oriented CPU model that is designed to be low power. A more powerful variant of it will be even an even starker difference compared to Intel's current offerings. Intel is in big trouble.

Brad would be better off going back to finish RE3 or FF7 for GotY than trying to slog all the way thru Yakuza LAD.

Can't abide the iPhone SE recommendation. I've got one, and it's by far the worst battery life I've ever had for a phone younger than two years old.

As a sys admin for a decently large company, I feel the fellas pain. A lot of to he annoying policy that happens at bigger companies tends to do with information retention and the company being able to cover their ass in a lawsuit where a vast discovery process happens.

lol the Mister scene drama is not a thing that only happens in Indie circles. I make kernels for proprietary hardware and we have drama about using hardware 'wrong' and libraries 'wrong' ALL THE TIME. And this is Aerospace!

Jeff, please speak into the microphone, and turn yourself up 33%. Your audio has never been good because you're mixed for yelling into your microphone, your volume literally isn't good unless you yell. 66% of the time you're speaking you're mumbling into the microphone like 20db quieter than everyone else.

Jeff needs better internet if he’s seeing compression artifacts with Stadia

Edit: You can now stream directly to YouTube from Stadia. Took them a hell of a long time to get there, but they launched that I think in November

'It sounds like an interesting problem to me!' I work at Red Ventures (in the main Charlotte campus) and basically the last year of my life has been doing this kinda stuff (migrating a ton of old hand me down stuff)

Its gotten to the point where we as a tech organization (which your engineers are now a part of!) are in a mindset where we're gonna put an END date on tech we write as we build it! No more trying to write software to live forever. It costs too much money to keep old crap limping forward, when we can just re-write it better for cheaper when tech has moved forward.

Man, I remember enjoying Disney's The Black Hole as an impressionable youth but I think it was all about the effects. While I didn't have the name connection, I too was a fan of VINCENT and Maximilian.

Watched it again on D+ over the break after all this time. While I did remember the not at all subtle religious text of the ending sequences, I forgot just how slow and plotting that was until things finally actually pop off.

About the mobile management on your personal phone. They wouldn't wipe your entire phone, they would wipe the corporate apps and configurations, at least that's how it works now, in Europe it would be illegal to wipe an entire personal phone. Hearing all this talk about moving to companies, I do it support, legal forces us to make you do all this stuff. Vinny gets it :D.

I got a base M1 Macbook Air and it destroys any Intel laptop I've owned before. Hell, it even outperforms my desktop in some areas (like Photoshop). It also doesn't get warm or noisy. I wouldn't consider any other laptop at this point.

I had never heard of The Black Hole until Vinny spoke about it before, but I was also born 12 years after it came out, so there's that.

I also am still rocking an iPhone 6S. I badly need a new phone - the battery is clearly on its last leg. Charge levels are wildly inconsistent and will sometimes jump down tens of percent before my eyes. The problem is, I want a headphone jack, and that dumb trend of getting rid of them hasn't died out yet. Also, I worry about the state of my gacha games, because transferring/logging into all of those is going to be a massive headache. I don't even know if it's possible in some cases.

Code injection stuff is super cool. My group of friends got really into Super Smash Bros Brawl mods in college. To load those up, you had to have the files on an SD card, and then you go into Brawl and load up the stage builder for it to initiate, where the screen would go black with white text and start processing stuff. Whenever someone who hadn't seen it happen before was present when we did it, they would freak out.

I don't know if some of the comments understood what they said. They didn't say the laptops perform poorly, they said with the setups they already have it would be difficult to integrate them. Imagine running a functional system for recording audio, switching up video feeds, etc and then someone comes in and says "Hey shove this in that system too!" You didn't plan for that new piece of hardware and your setup already works fine, so there is no need to add it. Don't fix what isn't broken and all that.
