Man, I'm right here with both Brad and Vinny.

Grade school had Apple //e's, didn't have a computer myself until 486 (like Brad)

Went to college in '98, did nothing but PC gaming in the dorms (I had a Voodoo 1, 2 and 3) and didn't really do much with consoles after the SNES era until later on (the 360 era really, I bought one in '06) so I have never really been on Sony stuff at all to this day.

Minecraft is lagging dad! :/

GB guys turned me onto Pi-Hole. It was pretty straight forward to set up (I have basic home networking knowledge).

I have used it to block some sites for my teen kid, like youtube, twitch, discord; until homework is done. Real easy GUI.

Also helped me find open dns, which helps easily block dangerous and inappropriate sites.

All tech competent adults need to learn to protect their kids on the internet.

It's adorable to think Jeff has kids who think of him as "Uncle Jeff who plays video games"

interesting to hear the "playing a hard part for the kids" bit. as a kid in the 90s with parents better at games than me that wasn't ever, under any circumstance, an option i considered. wonder to what extent that's personality and to what extent it's change in game design?

Vinny, I’m in my mid 30s and I remember handing my mother the controller so she could get me past a hard part of Super Mario Bros. She can’t play games now because anything that’s 3D makes her nauseous, but she beat Mario and Mario 3 with no warps.

Oh interesting, I guess calling every soda a "Coke" is weird in some places. That's what we do where I live. I guess it is silly when I think about it. It can lead to situations where someone will ask "Can you get me a Coke?" and then they're asked "What kind?" and they reply "Pepsi". It's actually weird to say soda here lol.

Someone mentioned/asked about whether the CD-I games were responsible for Nintendo locking up their IP because of how terrible the Zelda games were. Nintendo let Capcom make Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Time and they were pretty damn great!!

I love that this episode of Hotspot just turned into the Dadcast. Vinny's stories about his kids always make me chuckle.

Really got the emotions going when you started talking about how your parents would deal with gaming. I remember it always use to confuse the hell outta my dad but he got me into gaming when he came home one day like a kid from a candy store with a copy of the OG Laura Croft for PC. Neither of us had a clue what we were doing but man that was fun.

LOL. There os on 'a Nintendo'. I don't think many people under the age of 80 y.o. refer to all video games as nintendo(s) anymore. That was a late 80s and until 1994 emem of Boomer moms calling all video games nintendos. AFter 1997 that turned into the same mom's calling everything a PlayStation...then all those Boomer moms became irrelevant.

Anyone that claiming this is still a common confusion is "stretching". I loath the coming Gen-X period of whining about their coolness - back in the day.

The only involvement in video games my mom ever had was not really caring about letting us play M-rated games. We rented Mortal Kombat when I was like 7. One Christmas, she got me GTA 3 for the Xbox. I guess the store clerk had warned her about the game or something, because she asked to see some of it. Not wanting to hide the nature of the game, and knowing that she had been cool with stuff before, I immediately stole a taxi and ran over a pedestrian. She was appalled, but she didn't take it away or anything.

Fast forward to the 360 era, and for a little while, the 360 was the only method we had of watching Netflix. She was so unused to having to use a controller and would hold it weird. She had her left hand on the left side like normal, but she used her entire right hand to work the left thumbstick, lol.
