In KC back in the day we had a railroad themed chain called Fritses that did food delivery to your table using a small trail and a plate elivator. Each booth had one with the train running along the wall and a phone at each booth to order. It was a big thrill as a kid, but in recent years they had some issues with the health dep. and i dont think any are left.

The system did work tho, and could be used with a phone app or something in a more modern setup.

The restaurant is always making fresh food, just as now, in the kitchen nice and safe. However a serving is put tiny pots/plates/bowls that are easy to keep hot or cold. If you want to two things of ribs, just say, "Two dishes of ribs, please." There are multiple carts that do a regular dependable circuit around the room. Each cart so some standards on it, so you won't wait long. They could still have the "omelet station", "crepe station" or "carved meats"; but the attendant puts it on your plate. Or better yet, wraps the 'station foods' some butcher paper so you don't touch the food until back at the table.
