I don't mean to brandish my ignorance as a badge of honour or anything, but I have no idea what TikTok is. From what I gather watching this show, it's like Youtube, but vertical format instead of horizontal. It's probably 5 sec google search away, but if I learned anything from this show, is that my life is better not knowing.

@goosemunch: It was devised as a way for people to lip-sync over songs, so it has built-in functionality to add licensed music and other sound over your videos, along with built-in video editing tools. It's also a "short video" platform. Those are the main things that differentiate it from YouTube

That's why I stay here, on Giant Bomb Dot Com, a website that definitely would never create some kind of fake person to host a show as an elaborate stunt.

This brief dip into virtual influences really makes me want a full episode on vtubers!

Sure you have the uncanny superimposed influencers and the capitalising on mental health venting on twitter with Seraphine, but the increasingly popular vtubers from agencies or indies can not only be endlessly creative and funny, but also earnest in a way that these tiktok influences strive to emulate.

(They're also real people who, while tied to a brand and a draft of a character, aren't manfactured and authored in that kind of way)

First, that was some great editing/production by Jess.

On a more depressing note, I've never been more convinced technology evolves (and/or is perverted) faster than humans adapt to it. I often make the joke we won't see another series of Black Mirror because actual society finally caught up to the dystopic fiction focused on this gulf (and the show's creator eventually said something similar about how he wanted to do more lighthearted stuff now). Same with The Onion basically running out of material in late 2016.

I'm probably in the minority for liking these darker episodes more than the lighter ones, but turning the lens on this stuff is appreciated nonetheless.

Not super online myself, but being a biker this showed up in my usual news sources. Really weird stuff. Personally I find it kind of odd that some people seem to care what others think of their opinions.

I’ve been entirely too online since 2001 or so, and this show consistently makes me realize I have thankfully stayed in the shallow end of the pool. Either that or maybe I just have enough bullshit-radar to avoid a lot of this stuff. This show is consistently chilling and educational, and I think it’s one of the best shows GB is doing. Frankly, I wish this sort of education about online issues was more widely distributed and viewed than just premium or just GB, because really there needs to be more outreach on online literacy.

The Uncanny Valley thing is corpses btw. Corpses can carry disease or indicate danger so humans evolved an aversion to them which in our modern world extends to overly detailed CGI characters and the like.

I'll never forget Eidolon: The Last Profit. 13 years ago a small part of me thought we might be talking to a real A.I. I wanted to believe, anyway.

If there is an evolutionary reason for being freaked out by the uncanny valley, I think it's more to do with the dead and diseased rather than something not quite human which existed in the past, but Tamoor makes a good point that we are not equipped to handle modern life. Even putting aside the parasocial and insidious side of the internet, outside of migrations and stampedes most animal groups are quite small, and with humans once you go past the street/school/village level you can't possibly care about everyone on your contacts list let alone internet friends and followers.

BTW I appreciate the volume edit by Jess, I had to look up Windows 10 normalisation settings just to make Twitch watchable.

This show is kind of Bak 2 School, but Jeff is the Dan and it's about online topics instead of real world things.

I feel like I should be frightened by the future, but with the exception that facebook is trying to exert control over the future of virtual people I'm actually pretty excited about virtual folks.

good episode as always , i',m continually finding these to be topically interesting in the oddest ways to the point that a few of these i keep thinking might be worth showing my niece ( and i guess nephews but mostly her instead) some of these as mild life lessons. shes 12 now but last yr (11) i'd caught her with a instagram acc lying about her age and looking at the camera making faces like a ho ....it was a bit unsettling even when i know i was pretty dumb online when i was a mid-late teen.. her being younger tho makes me realize how much has changed and such n of course being a responsible aunt i ratted her out ... sadly my sister ( 6 yrs older than myself) is one of those very much not online ppl who is bearly tech literate so i have no idea how well a talking to she gave my niece ..... either way challenging times indeed , i mean you can only shelter younger generations so much and after that well ... it is what it is .
