Do they do this show live or is it just recorded and posted later?

@andrewevans: They did a few of the Soul Caliber ones live last year but for this batch they've been prerecorded

@drachmalius: I remember the live streams when they kept showing pre-recorded runs one after another and everyone was freaking out in chat not knowing what was real or not. Man that was fun.

@andrewevans: This Run was recorded most likely just after the previous episode.

Man that whole fusion machine is cool, are the monsters picked random or are they always the same

Oh, I remember that boss. It gets all sorts of freaky as it gets further.

Noiman still giving trouble, but otherwise they're doing pretty good. Hell, they might even beat the game within the next 4-5 episodes!

Also that first death before Noiman was maybe the hardest I've laughed at GB content this year.

When you're following Dead Eye up the helicopter shaft, just stay on the right side wall and follow behind him, that way you don't need to slide out of his way.

Watching this, I really get a sense of how speedruns are completed. Learning, little-by-little. In fact, that could be a cool twist on the series. Do a speedrun of one of your favorite games. I guess it'd be about getting a certain time instead of just beating it, though.

Yeah, I've been wondering why they haven't been doing that instead.

Even more bizarre is the fact that they'll often take the right wall, but they'll use the ceiling to get over to the left side of the boss as it's dangling on the ceiling, seemingly unaware that it just makes more sense to say on the right side.

Anyway, Dan and/or Vinny, I provided detailed information about the Deadeye Joe battle in the comments for Part 10, but I'll summarize them here:

Phase 1: Your shots cause the boss to rotate. When it's about to shoot, stop shooting it to make its shots more predictable.

Phase 2: Pay attention to the boss' tip to get a rough idea as to which way its laser will travel. Each time it rolls up and down the incline, the way the tip is pointing changes.

Phase 3: STOP SHOOTING WHEN IT'S ABOUT TO SHOOT. It's mindblowing that you two don't notice this, but the laser comes OUT OF THE BOSS, and the boss only moves left and right if you're shooting it. If the boss is ERRATICALLY MOVING LEFT AND RIGHT as you're shooting it, then it may be a good idea to STOP SHOOTING THE BOSS. When the boss is shooting, just focus on dodging by using the ceiling and floor to stay ahead of the laser.

@lonelyspacepanda: I mean, that's just how you had to play old video games in general. Speedy or not. Games were out to get you, for a variety of reasons, so either you learned as you went or you never beat it.

Speedrunning is an extention of that I suppose, but honestly it's all just self improvement through practise and learning. That applies to all things in life, not just games.

I think that's what old farts like me are really lamenting when they nostalgically wist about "games used to be hard". They were good life lessons for kids, teaching the value of applying yourself towards a goal in a fun not heavy handed way. It's not a speed running tactic; it's a life tactic. Try hard to improve or fail.

Now get off my lawn ya damn kids.

At the end of the last fight, I was yelling "SHOOT IT! SHOOT THAT MOTHERFUCKER!!!" as Dan shot it.

This series, holy shit. It's my favorite Contra game and this is not disappointing.

I'm very happy they were able to make progress. They sort of figured out the Deadeye Joe fight. Just need to stop shooting when he's shooting to up their survival rate.

@kevinski: For phase 1, I just unload into that asshole. When he shoots at me, i just slide into the corner if it gets dangerous. No need to stop shooting to see the bullets coming. Go ham!

I think they're not paying attention to their shots enough. SO many times either Dan or Vinny just aren't hitting a boss, and not moving around to adjust. I understand that they're probably watching the boss for their pattern, but man.

Also the dinosaur will only sneeze if you shoot the nose.

Also the helicopter phase for Deadeye, your bullets affect it's trajectory. If he gets close, tap him away.

Phase 3, he recoils as you do more damage, and he'll rebound when you stop. That's why you shouldn't be shooting it as his laser charges up.

I'm wondering why Dan and Vinny don't just stay on the left side during the Stage 2 boss. Seems risky to keep sliding out of the way of those falling rocks when they can just stay in one safe spot and fire into his face until he's dead. Is it cuz Vinny doesn't like using shot II?

@nmckee503: nope, you don't even need to duck. And with their concentrated fire power the rocks won't even touch them... makes me wonder if they could farm lives that way actually.

It seems like they're a couple of episodes ahead so even if they are reading (really handy) comments like this one, they aren't likely to be applied until a couple more episodes from now.

It does kind of astonish me that they haven't noticed the laser comes from the direction of the eye in phase 2 though, that seems like pretty basic stuff.

Vinny spoke about doing this after someone showed him an image in the comments, they just haven't done it, probably because Vinny doesn't use shot 2, but more likely they've just forgot.

During the OG Contra season of "This is the Run," somebody made a compilation of all the times they cursed throughout the run. This time, I would like a compilation of all of Dan's unintelligible grunts. Please and thank you.
