Unfinished: EX: Fortnite 07/26/2017

From the bombcast this sounds to me like Clash Royal. A decent enough game that would be fun but destroyed by terrible f2p transactions and currencies. Having to log in frequently for a game that's also not on a mobile device to pick up one of your resources also sounds absolutely absurd if that's how it works.

As someone who loves horde modes and have always badly wanted a AAA type game that is just a fully committed game to that idea, I think this look so good. For building stuff is really cool too (I really enjoyed a HL 2 mod for this back in the day). Very excited to play it.

I wonder how many AAA games you've played recently. This is common.

That's exactly why it took so long I'm sure but the game looks great.

You don't have to log in every couple hours. Jeff got it wrong. There is a tech tree called research that requires you to drain tech points once you reach capacity. At start you gain 54 points per hour with a capacity of 1064.

So basically you have to log in every 20 hours if you want to get all the points without losing. If you log in every day you are losing very little. If you aren't logging in daily it just means progression is slowed some in one of the two tech trees.

I keep wondering this, so I'll just ask: does the pun in the name play in the US? I'm sure I've seen people saying that "fortnight" isn't a common term across a lot of America. I guess the name would still play as a portmanteau of sorts, in the same way that "Minecraft" does, but it would certainly lose some of its nuance (if you'd even call it that).

Anyway, Fortnite seems cool. I'm not sure I'll get into it unless I have a group of friends who all want to do so with me, but I do enjoy tower-defence style mechanics and I personally like the deep level of systems they've packed in here.

@y2ken: The game is playable as a solo player early on and the game has a mechanic that allows you to deploy friendly AI that are both powerful in lieu of actual players.

But yes as you progress into the harder areas of the game new game modes will become very hard to solo. Through the "play with others" tool most players can build a roster of friendly players via the in game friend list. At the end of every mission you can simply click a button to add a friend if you liked playing with another player.

That's definitely good to hear! I was coming more from a perspective of, "This seems like a game I'd enjoy playing with friends, but wouldn't make the time for if it was just me." I have too many big single-player games on my plate right now as-is! But I could totally see this becoming a staple for a while amongst my friend group during our multiplayer sessions if they were interested.

It's an interesting question about the name. Personally, I don't think the name really works, but it isn't because of the commonality of the term. You are correct that fortnight isn't the most common term in the US. Having said that, I still think most reasonably educated people here would know the term.

The problem is really a spelling thing. "Fortnite" is a valid alternate spelling of "fortnight," and on the occasions I've seen the term used in the US, "fortnite" is the more common spelling. It's like "theater" and "theatre" or "color" and "colour." Both are correct, but one is more common in a given place.

As someone who knew nothing about the game, when I saw the title I just took it as a literal expression that the gameplay would revolve around a two-week period.

This is like if they gathered together most of the things I dislike about modern games and made a game with it. There's nothing about this that seems interesting or compelling to me. Just the HUD/UI alone is already enough to repel me from it. Well, at least now I finally know what this game is.

You know it's going to be a weak QL when the dev is there, the guys really tone down their honesty about the game's quality and "quirks"(downfalls).

Is it possible to play this and enjoy it without paying a dime? I played the beta on PC and all the systems didn't seem great.

Getting a real Battleborn vibe from this. Not necessarily the exact gameplay, but more in the "this is way too complicated for it's own good, and it's relying on a large multiplayer player base, and in three months there's going to be tumbleweeds in the servers"

Seems kinda neat to me. Great aesthetic. I don't really have friends to play with but someone pointed out above that having AI teammates is possible I guess. Not sure I'd pick this up now though as I need to be picky with funds.

There's nothing fun about spending time whacking inanimate objects in the world to farm resources. It's a shame that they had to include that type of crafting in the game.

I actually disagree, but I realize I may be an outlier. It all relies on sound design; Terraria, for example, feels so good because hitting and smashing resources sounds so satisfying. The verdict is still out for this game - I'll probably try it when it goes free-to-play in 2018 - but it seems interesting, and I'm excited to try it out.

No disrespect to the devs but watching this just makes me want an Orcs Must Die 3. Everything about this seems like a downgrade or addition that doesn't interest me (resource gathering). Maybe it was just the level they showed off but it look easy to a fault. They just shot everyone so what is even the point of base building? I assume it gets harder but I wouldn't want to play it if I had to slog through many pointless levels like this. Orcs Must Die was great about letting you crank up the difficulty and immediately throwing you into the action.

Yeah I've probably put 10+ hours in the game and my biggest complaint is that its difficulty curve is painfully slow. Pretty much all of the missions I've done so far have been super easy and don't really require you to set up traps as long as you have a decent weapon and ammo. The only time I've lost a mission is when I did the last storm shield defense in the first area without really setting up a defense and tried to do it myself. I do think the building system is awesome and I've played enough now that I have a good grasp on all the systems so I'm no longer super confused. I'm excited to get into the next area (Plankerton) and see if they don't amp up the difficulty.

Hard to tell with this one. I like the character and art design a lot, and the environmental destructability and base-building seems neat. But the shooting seems kinda dull and I'm really leery of the menu/main base stuff. I don't mind complex systems, but I'm concerned about how much of a F2P grind it is.

The HUD is not quite as bad, but it still reminds me of when I raided in WoW and saw screenshots from some other guild members, where you could barely see the actual game running beneath all the counters and whatnot.

I'm not a fan of weapon levels that make them worthless a few hours in. I loved the system in Defiance at launch where the guns had their base damage level, and rarity just changed the kinds of bonuses, number of attachment slots and stuff like that they had. So a purple SMG could have the bonus that it reloaded your off-hand weapons as you got critical hits.

But then I may have been alone in that, considering even Defiance changed that to a generic loot treadmill where a level 200 shotgun does insignificant damage compared to a level 3500 one a few months after launch.

I find much like Destiny it kind of fits that "chat with your friends while having something to do" genre of game. The mechanics are fine, but it does have a bit too much downtime and I don't know that I have had it ever seem difficult at this point though I haven't even made it to the second area yet.

Yeah, if I get this game, it will be because I'm playing with friends and "shooting the shit while we shoot the shit" as Jeff says. Much like us playing the Division, or grinding in Diablo.

I'm sure no one will read this, but as someone who has been playing this game for the past week, I feel the need to respond to all the naysayers in this thread:

The more difficult FortNite gets, the more fun it is.

I'm finally getting to level 15-19 areas in the starting area, and the end waves are MUCH more challenging, requiring my team to build more complex defensive arrays. It took many hours of play to get to that point, which may turn off more casual players, but it's worth the investment. This wasn't shown in the QuickLook at all, as they are still running through the very easy areas that don't require any traps or building to complete.
