Huh wrestling came up in this anime game. Almost as if they are the same damn thing.

Also I love that Brad is willing to engage in wrestling talk if Dan is not involved.

Too much anime, not enough wrestling.

I've only seen a handful of Anime. Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, and the first 3 or 4 episodes of Evangelion. I own GitS the film. Should I watch it or just skip to Stand Alone Complex? (And what the hell is Arise?)

Is it just that there is no violence or massive explosions every 10 minutes or is it something else?

@do_the_manta_ray: I think Soma fits that ticket perfectly. Not the whole Police Noire bit but the whole idea around the conciousness and what it is to be human. Even the characters can be thought of as a ghost in the shell.

I would be 100% down with this if that last character is just a basic character model with the laughing man on it.

Gits actually started as a manga which has a way different tone than the more serious movies. In case anyone cares and didnt know. (the movies are kinda better anyway)

Edit: And ofcourse everyone knows. Seeing these comments theres still plenty of people out there that like Gits haha. Also this game looks super poopy.

@brad You might be the one to like Stand Alone Complex if anyone at GB SF would (well, Jason). One part cyborg action, one part Japanese political intrigue, one part transhumanist philosophical issues. You should check it out. Don't worry about the first two films, but the third film is essentially season 3 of SAC. It's all pretty fucking rad.

p.s.: this game doesn't look great

John Cena was pretty great in Trainwreck, and you see a lot of him.

Sad it isn't Austin playing this.

The GitS universe is well designed. This is not.

Wrestling is as close as you can get to anime without being animated.

For my money that title goes to Akira though both Akira and GitS suffer from trying to cram in too much in too short running time when they adapt their respective manga series. GitS suffers a bit in my mind by focusing more on style over substance.

Mamoru Oshii is a great director. His movies are slow sure, but they are also chokefull of detail and are weirdly romantic and detached at the same time, I would recommend his films over any other GITS thing, and go beyond, Avalon is an amazing film that any scifi lover should watch.

Yeah, the Ghost in the Shell movies are great, especially if you're into film auteurs such as Andrei Tarkovskij. SAC is not bad either, looove the laughing man!

I watched the movie too years back without having seen the show, had no idea what the hell was going on for the most part.

Weird name for a wrestling podcast.

As for people saying not much happens in GiTS, Stuff totally happens, it's just really subtle and weird about it all. It's not exciting stuff, it's thinky stuff.

It's like Memories of Murder in a way, a movie that take you on a wild goose chase then leaves you with an unsatisfying ending because that's just how it is. That's the reality of the subject matter. It isn't possible to always figure everything out, and sometimes you lose. Psycho-Pass, an anime very much in the same vein as GiTS also does this, but in a different way than the aforementioned. I really love it's, "huh...well, okay." sort of ending.

I mean, you already own it, might as well watch it, then watch Stand Alone Complex. Arise is a weird prequel series. It's a bit weird to see after watching all the other GiTS stuff.

It's a shame this is a free to play shooter. Hopefully someone will rip the models and stick them in an XCOM 2 mod or something.

Came to watch something somewhat interesting for a few minutes, stayed for the question and answer in the latter half of the QL. Always like listening to Jeff analyze and describe.

As for how this game will do, perhaps Brad/Jeff are over thinking it. It is serviceable enough for a start and, much like other multi-player shooters, and online RPG's for that matter, and ties itself to an existing franchise or such for implied depth. In time they may find a way to actually make this Shooter at par or above by better maps, refined balance and weapons, that side of it. And there may be other markets than the US. I do not play these games, but it didn't look bad..

On the off-chance that nobody else has pointed it out yet, im going to be that guy and say that ghost in the shell was initially a manga, although the movie(s) and SAC are better anyway.

@hamst3r: Awesome thanks! The film was given to me by a friend who saw Cowboy Bebop on my shelf. The whole comparison to the Matrix has kind of kept me from checking it out. I'll pop it in tonight and give it a shot

@bicycle_repairman: See the article I linked to. It's that (director) Mamoru Oshii takes far more influence from European auteurs than Hollywood ones, which affects his use of dialog (as texture and not a driver of story), and the overall argument the film makes.

@eladren: I'm scared to watch anything Oshii has made since Avalon (or The Sky Crawlers I guess). Have you seen Assault Girls & Garm Wars?

The PSP GITS game isnt terrible. Its an FPS. You can chose anyone of the crew to complete missions and anyone can equip any weapon. My favorite part was that one of Tachicoma (spider robot) would follow you around. You can customize them with paintjobs, weapons and even AI. You could even hop in. You moved faster and had access to stronger weapons.

I couldnt beat it since the UMD basically fell apart.

it's nice to have a good conversation going on in a video, even if its off topic like wrestling, but once you started talking about it you barely played, you were in the wrong capture points for more than 30 seconds multiple times, and haven't used the Q drone ability for over 7 minutes when it was fully charged. It was hard watching.

This does not look like a good Ghost in the Shell game.

I like how half way through this just turns into wrestling talk, and then doesn't stop until the end......

I simply adore this song. It's one of my go-to ringtones ever since I watched the series.

This is one of the first quick looks that I just couldn't watch until the end. The game is a textbook example of the most drab boring video game experience you could imagine.

Also, there's so many genres which could pay better respect to the source material over a by-the-numbers first person shooter. A strategy game in same the vein of XCOM, a role-playing game with a strong focus on investigation, even-- anything else but this. Then again, speculating from a business standpoint Call of Duty-style first person shooters are what is "in" and guaranteed to generate some revenue while attempting to appeal to a large audience and perhaps fans of the Ghost in the Shell movies and series.
