the game itself is not great. Ghost in the shell is, holy shit that movie is incredible, as is the sequel

John Cena has been booed for over a decade. He wasn't initially booed because 'he won all the time', it was because he was a bad wrestler who lacked style and had "5 moves of doom", all of which looked terrible. He would get 'You can't wrestle' chants almost all throughout his career. However, this past year he's had some great matches and has really improved.

Was really looking forward to this one but man... the way how weapons shoot and the hitboxes seem to arbitrary randomized (its probably not but that how it feels) put me of quite a bit...

And of course it is region locked. They gotta keep this gem out of the hands of us filthy foreigners.

yes, Ghost in the Shell is still popular. Yes, they are still making new Ghost in the Shell stuff that is also popular and quite good.

Consensus among GitS fans tends to be that Arise is hot garbage. It's largely divorced from the original creators of the series and it shows in the poorer quality of the animation and writing. It also shamelessly rehashes moments from SAC and the original movie, for whatever reason.

In all seriousness, this never should have been a first person shooter. The anime was never about combat in that regard. An RTS, or point and click adventure game would be able to do the source material a little more justice. Sadly, none of this matters as the studio will be able to recoup it's development costs in alternate skins of Motoko alone, thus justifying similar licensed cash grabs.

Man, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the almost perfect blueprint for a GitS game..and maybe a bit of Alpha Protocol and MGSV thrown in for good measure.

Anyway this game seems like a big whatever and yes, Stand Alone Complex is a pretty damn good show. Ghost in the Shell is kind of weird franchise in terms of standing, like yes there should probably be a good video game for it and there's probably a few good, interesting ways you could make one but who knows if the market is there to justify it.

@assirra: Apologies if you're already aware but that is only the opening of the show, the actual show itself is pretty well animated with traditional animation with the odd CG tank or vehicle thrown in.

While I'm a big fan of the original GitS film (and the various spin-offs for that matter), I can completely understand why someone might not like it.

That aside, this video game is really disappointing in that it's such a bland and lazy imagining of the GitS universe. An Arkham-style adventure game set in the GitS universe could be great and would be able to explore the series to its full potential, but instead we get a by-the-numbers FPS that fails to use the property in any meaningful way, which is somehow more frustrating than not getting a GitS game at all.

Blade Symphony is tons of fun too man. But I do agree that Dystopia is way better (and way better at being a GitS game) than Neotokyo, how can you have a GitS game without diving!?

This quick look should have been an Austin Walker/Vinny Caravella joint, and that's really all I have to say about it.

Arise was... weird.

Needlessly aesthetically adjusted (Why?? to suit a younger, fresh crowd??) Much simpler (and let's face it,.. more stupid) than SAC ever was.

Why did they rehash scenes from SAC and the movie?? At the time when I watched I was like wtf... are they meant to be actually showing the exact same event, or is this a way too obvious (and therefore pointless) throwback to those moments for some strange reason??? The cardinal sin here is that they actually re-did the same things from the prior series/movie, and the animation/direction was actually worse! Just like GitS 2.0!

What were they thinking? Are they that dense that they couldn't write a much more ominous/interesting lead in, to the start of the movie? Yowsers there were some big mis-steps in Arise.

Barely any interesting philosphy, the music wasn't up to scratch, voice cast was adjusted too much... etc. Why didn't they go back even further to the start of Cyberbrainism etc?

It was almost more of a weird hybrid of the manga/movie than has already been made - calling Aramaki ape-face and the like, etc.

If people thought SAC and the movies were nonsensical (which, let's be honest is somewhat true - and perhaps partially down to the translation) then don't watch Arise as myself - a self-confessed GitS fanboy, found most of it really, really stupid.

We really didn't need to know where Borma, Paz and the others actually came from, and it was way too neat a telling of their quick recruitment to Section 9.

If a better writer had a chance to work with these broad ideas for Arise, (The reboot/back storey for Section 9 and the team), say like Kenji Kamiyama, it could have been quite phenomenal.

Unfortunately it looks like some new controlling direction for the GitS franchise has greenlit some money-making ideas in the last year or three without actually properly respecting what makes GitS so worthwhile for the rabid fan base. Hence Arise and hence this middling game.

There are some great background fodder elements to utilise in a game set in the neo-Tokyo world of GitS and it WOULD NOT have to star the Major or Batou etc. Someone clever could make something amazing with it, and it wouldn't have to be AAA either.

Hacking, possession, trans-humanism, shooting, stealth, identity, oversight, defense vs offense military, pmc's, future-combat, robots, what is a soul, etc, etc, etc... Think of what the SOMA guys (Frictional) could do in a world like that...

Jeff's not wrong.... I actually am the biggest Ghost in the Shell fan, but its one of those things where I found it difficult to get people to watch that film without seeing people go "huh? what are you watching?" for the past 20 years. And yes, I've bought the manga, movies and anime series.... even I feel sometimes I'm like "this is super pretentious." I had that question ask to myself like 14 years ago. To me it's just something stylish I like to delve into, it does capture that feel.... even if I'm using the Manga foot notes to justify the film's plot.

Honestly, as much as I loved the GitS movie at the time...you're probably better off sticking to Ghost in the Shell: SAC (and the second season, Ghost in the Shell: SAC Second Gig) which is available on Hulu. Different continuity from the movie I think.

I like how this Quick Look starts off talking about anime, then eventually starts talking about real-life American anime.

It's actually pretty safe. Just don't tuck your head. He kind of does all the work for you.

Graphics are not good and bad map designs make the game play even worse.
